Please Help COMODO detectected TZCHANGE.EXE despite reformat

Unread postby suhailkanuga » September 11th, 2008, 11:04 am

Respected helpers,

My computer had been infected with malware and I did a reformat. After this I inserted my pen drive (not realizing it may also be infected). After this I did a COMODO online virus scan that detected TZCHANGE.EXE

I did my reformat using the windows recovery console and I selected the "out of box, restore factory settings" option, and not the "erase hard drive option"

The following is my Hijackthis log

Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

So friend, my PC is behaving ok. I told you that it was infected and because I barely had any data any way I decided to do a reformat. But then I did a COMODO online scan and it detected TZCHANGE.EXE as a threat and that is what prompted me to post on this forum. I also searched for this TZCHANGE.EXE and deleted the file before posting on this forum but after deleting the file I did another online COMODO scan which detected TZCHANGE.EXE.

I'm confused :(

  1. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to a convenient location.
  2. Double click on mbam-setup.exe to install it.
  3. Before clicking the Finish button, make sure that these 2 boxes are checked (ticked):
      Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  4. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
  5. Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
  6. Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
  7. When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
  8. Checked (ticked) all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.

  9. After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

Hello suhailkanuga.

I apologize for posting here as I am not aloud to but I didn't want to wast you're time or the Helpers time.

My name is Josh & I am a Global Moderator on the COMODO Forums. I would just like to point out that TZCHANGE.exe was a False Positive (FP) detected by Comodo Antivirus.

It has been fixed in a recent definition update - You can scan your system again, And see that it has been removed. :-)

If you google around, TZCHANGE is actually part of the Windows OS (As some type).

That's why with other Anti Virus/Malware Scans you're not seeing any threats. :)

Thanks
Josh (Comodo Global Moderator).

Congratulations you are clean! :)
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore. - You should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

  1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
  2. Select the System Restore tab.
  3. Check (tick) Turn off system restore on all drives box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart your computer.

After restarting your computer, follow these steps:

  1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
  2. Select the System Restore tab.
  3. Uncheck (untick) Turn off system restore on all drives box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart your computer.

Note: Do this only ONCE, don't flush it regularly.

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.
(Vista users must ensure that any programs are Vista compatible BEFORE installing)

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5.2
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

Install SpyWare Blaster 4.0
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Happy safe surfing![/quote]
