browser, desktop, and possibly other infections

The most visible problems I am having are in IE and Opera. Whenever I do a google search, the result links take me to the wrong website. After a scan with Avast failed to reconcile the issue, I tried TrendMicro Housecall, but IE and Opera could not access the site. I was able to run the scan using Flock, and it found several issues, and fixed all but JOKE_BLUESCREEN. The browser issues have persisted, however, and upon every boot, my desktop background is changed to an image of a window that says I am infected with spyware.

I am connected to the internet through a router. Here is my hijackthis log:

edit: I cannot directly access my background and screen saver settings (I now have a blue screen of death screen saver). Moreover, I forgot to mention that I cannot access this forum or any other website that would help me remove malware (including housecall) in IE or Opera, so I am using Flock at the moment

Hi jkramer7, Welcome to the forums!Image

My name is Ken, on these forums I am known as ktreffin. I will be helping you with your current problem. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

HiJackThis logs do take some time to review and research. I would appreciate it if while you are waiting, you could please do the following for me:

Please make an Uninstall List using HiJackThis.

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
    5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

As we work together to resolve your problem, please read these instructions carefully. You may wish to print them off or copy them to Notepad.

Lastly, please keep these points in mind:
  • If you have questions, please DON'T hesitate to ask!
  • The instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
  • Please post your replies only to this topic, and please DO NOT start a new thread.
  • Since there may be multiple issues with your system, please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean!"

I am reviewing your log now, and will be back with you shortly. Thank you for your patience.

Ken

Hello jkramer7,

Thanks for your patience..

It does appear that you are infected. Before we begin, I need to stress some important points to you.
  • Some of the instructions I will provide may get quite long. I highly recommend that you print a copy of them off or copy them into Notepad.
  • If at any time you have questions, please DON'T hesitate to ask!
  • Please keep in mind that the instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
  • Also, please remember that there may be multiple issues with your system, please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean!"

Ready? Lets go....

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware.
I recommend that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the the Viewpoint components :
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. In Control Panel, double-click Add or Remove Programs.
  3. In Add or Remove Programs, highlight Viewpoint Media Player, click Remove.

How to prevent it from being recreated every time you run the AOL software:
    • Open AOL
    • Go to Help on the toolbar
    • Select About AOL
    • Hit Ctrl D and a secret panel can be accessed which will allow you to disable all desktop and IM features associated with Viewpoint.

Re: browser, desktop, and possibly other infections

Unread postby jkramer7 » September 10th, 2008, 6:52 pm

I followed your instructions, but only had one problem. I can't access the website to download Java. I am having trouble with my internet connection right now, and I might be able to download it later.

After the Anti-Malware scan the above symptoms went away, but I noticed that Avast was scanning alot of outbound (spam) email.

Here is the hijackthis log:

Hi jkramer7,

Are you having internet problems because of an ISP problem or did they start after doing something during the fix? Your log does show that old version of Java which we need to get updated. You said that Malwarebytes' improved things. What kind of problems are you still having? There are a few other steps we need to do, but first I want to make sure you will have an internet connection.

Let me know.
Thanks,
Ken

In terms of noticable problems i'm still having, the only noticable one remaining is that there are spam messages outgoing from my computer when I have thunderbird open (Avast reports the most recent as "you're time for growth enhancement")

interestingly enough, the outgoing messages seem to have stopped, though I am certain that they were happening after the anti-malware scan/removal

not sure if that makes a difference

edit: Avast just popped up saying it had detected a rootkit, so we can chalk that up on the list of existing problems

Hi jkramer7,

Great....Looks like Java is up to date. Nice job. We still have a little work to do. Please do the following:

Step #1: Download and Run: OTMoveIt2

Download OTMoveIt2 by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
Code: Select all
C:\WINDOWS\TASKMAN.EXE

  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2

Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

*==============================================*

Step #2: Remove malware lines using Hijack This

Please start HiJackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on "Do A System Scan Only".
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries by clicking on them:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing
O2 - BHO: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - AutorunsDisabled - (no file)
O18 - Protocol: AutorunsDisabled - (no CLSID) - (no file)

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HIJACKTHIS and click on "Fix Checked".

Once complete, please exit HiJackThis.

*===============================================*

Step #3: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website to perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to your desktop by changing the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Now close the window.

*===============================================*

Step #4: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • A New Hijack This Log
  • Contents of the OTMoveIt Log
  • Contrents of the Kaspersky Online Scan Log

Thanks,
Ken

Looks like we still have some work to do....

Kaspersky found some infected files in the Temporary folders, and also in your junk folder in Thunderbird. We will take care of those temporary folders, but I would like you to empty the Junk folder in Thunderbird first. Once you have emptied the junk folder, please do the following:

Step #1: Stop malware running processes

Please open Task Manager by pressing crtl + alt + delete keys simultaneously.
  • Click Process
  • Click Image Name to Alphabetize the list
  • Find
      TASKMAN.EXE
  • Click on each one of the processes above
  • After clicking on the process, please click End Process
  • Repeat steps for each process listed above.
  • Close Task Manager

*==============================================*

Step #2: Run: OTMoveIt2

  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
Code: Select all
C:\WINDOWS\TASKMAN.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\system32\a.exe

*==============================================*

Step #3: Download and Run ATF Cleaner

Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

*==============================================*

Step #4: Download and Run Random's System Information Tool (RSIT)

  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

*===============================================*

Step #5: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • Contents of the RSIT logs (log.txt and info.txt)
  • Contents of the OTMoveIt log

Thanks,
Ken

Hey Ken,

I don't have time to run everything right now, but I thought i'd let you ponder the steps that I attempted to complete:
my thunderbird junk folder is already empty
TASKMAN.exe is not listed as a running process

Even if I had time to continue right now, I'm not sure if I should given that I can't complete the first step.

That's OK, go ahead and continue with the OTMoveIt instructions and everything else afterwards. Take your time, whenever you get it done is fine....

Thanks,
Ken
