Hijackthis.jog for my machine is posted - Help needed

Hi
A week ago in machine McAfee detected Generic PWS.o. I use Windows XP with SP3. After scaning using McAfee ver 8.0i, it was deleted, but everytime after booting the machine the virus alert keept on coming. I posted this in McAfee forum and a gentleman adviced me to scan the sytem with SuperAntispyware. It helped me to remove the virus from the machine, in addition to few more trojans removed. Now i'm posting my hijackthis.log to make sure if my machine is absolutely free from any danger. Your help will be much appreciated.

Hi Mz30

Thanks. I didn't know that i should not run any antivirus software. I have just ran one and stopped (after seeing your post) without taking any action though it detected 5 adware. Do i have to generate another log?

Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

  1. Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save it to a convenient location.
  2. Double click on mbam-setup.exe to install it.
  3. Before clicking the Finish button, make sure that these 2 boxes are checked (ticked):
      Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
      Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  4. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware will now check for updates. If your firewall prompts, please allow it. If you can't update it, select the Update tab. Under Update Mirror, select one of the websites and click on Check for Updates.
  5. Select the Scanner tab. Click on Perform full scan, then click on Scan.
  6. Leave the default options as it is and click on Start Scan.
  7. When done, you will be prompted. Click OK, then click on Show Results.
  8. Checked (ticked) all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.

  9. After it has removed the items, Notepad will open. Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh hjt log. You can also find the log in the Logs tab. The bottom most log is the latest.

The scan results didn't show any threats. Before i started the scan, i manually deleted an exe file which i have kept in one of my folder that i no longer use. I posted you yesterday two threats one of which is the above exe file, but the other one doesn't come up in today's Malwarebytes scan.

Hi vvd ,
There is nothing to suggest any infection in your logs ,there is one entry in system restore which will be removed with my final instructions.

You don't appear to have a firewall running:

Here are some firewalls which are free for personal use and most used:
Kerio Personal Firewall (Free version after 30 days)
Online Armor Free

Or you could buy their paid version online or in a shop nearby:
Kerio Personal Firewall (Continue paid version after 30 days)
Online Armor or Online Armor AV+ with Anti-Virus included



Congratulations you are clean! :)
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore. - You should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.


  1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
  2. Select the System Restore tab.
  3. Check (tick) Turn off system restore on all drives box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart your computer.

After restarting your computer, follow these steps:

  1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties.
  2. Select the System Restore tab.
  3. Uncheck (untick) Turn off system restore on all drives box.
  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart your computer.

Note: Do this only ONCE, don't flush it regularly.

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above.

(Vista users must ensure that any programs are Vista compatible BEFORE installing)

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5.2

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.
