Adware - Win32.TrojanDropper

Unread postby traderpards » August 20th, 2008, 3:05 pm

Hey Guys,
I have something on my machine and I've tried for 2 days to get rid of. The symptom is that it redirects me to some (seemingly) random web site when I click on an IE Google search result. Ad-Aware finds the following: Win32.TrojonDropper, Adware.Podcast, Adware.BHO (generic) and Adware.Agent. Ad-Aware will delete these guys but they always reappear when I presumably perform search in IE. My Favorites shortcuts all work and I can go to a site from the command line. Only when I perform a search do I get this redirection - I think that's where it's reloading the malware. I've disabled all the start up items in msconfig and that doesn't seem to stop the loading of this thing. Also, I was infected with Antivirus2009 about a week ago and thought I got rid of that. I wonder if this is related...
If you guys can figure this out, I would be very, VERY grateful!!

Thank you very much for looking at this!

Hi traderpards, Welcome to the forums!Image

My name is Ken, on these forums I am known as ktreffin. I will be helping you with your current problem. Please note that I am still in training at Malware Removal University, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

HiJackThis logs do take some time to review and research. I would appreciate it if while you are waiting, you could please do the following for me:

Please make an Uninstall List using HiJackThis.

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
    5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

As we work together to resolve your problem, please read these instructions carefully. You may wish to print them off or copy them to Notepad.

Lastly, please keep these points in mind:
  • If you have questions, please DON'T hesitate to ask!
  • The instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
  • Please post your replies only to this topic, and please DO NOT start a new thread.
  • Since there may be multiple issues with your system, please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean!"

I am reviewing your log now, and will be back with you shortly. Thank you for your patience.

Ken

Hey Ken!

Thank you for helping me. This thing has been really annoying since I first asked for help. I kept running Ad-Aware and it kept find W32.TrojoanDropper plus a few others that kept coming back even after I got rid of them. And Norton couldn't find it any of it!! (I have Symantec Endpoint "Protection").

Well, this morning Symantec kept going off like a loaded gun - It was finding things like FastAlert (trojan) and something else that Ad-Aware couldn't find. It fixed that and wanted me to restart. After restarting I checked my browser by searching for some item and seeing if the thing got loaded back again. It didn't - at least it didn't load those 4 or 5 items that seemed like it relates to your search item - makes them look like sponsored links from Google but when you click on (not even those) any result in the list, the status bar in IE indicates that you are being redirected to www.xmlsucker-something and it's usually a porn site or some yellow pages thing. That didn't happen this time. It actually went where it was supposed to!

But I'm not convinced all is well. If you still would like to take a quick look at my uninstall list, here it is but if you don't see anyting, maybe Norton got it - finally. Thank you very much for looking at this!

Hi traderpards,

Before we begin, I need to stress some important points to you.
  • Some of the instructions I will provide may get quite long. I highly recommend that you print a copy of them off or copy them into Notepad.
  • If at any time you have questions, please DON'T hesitate to ask!
  • Please keep in mind that the instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
  • Also, please remember that there may be multiple issues with your system, please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean!"

Ready? Lets go....

The HijackThis log you posted shows it was done while in Safe Mode. To get a good look at what is going on, I need to see a log from the Normal boot mode. Please do the following:

Step #1: Please post a new Hijack This Log
  • Please launch Hijackthis while the computer is in Normal boot mode.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.

Please Remember:
Don't use the Analyze This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.

*===============================================*

Step #2: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • A New Hijack This Log

Thanks,
Ken

Hi David,

Thank you for the new HijackThis log. That looks much better. I really don't see much in your HijackThis log, however I would like to run a couple of scans to make sure nothing is hiding.

One question: Is the machine used for business? From some of the entries present in your HijackThis log, it appears that it is. You must understand if this machine is used for business (commercial) purposes, it may be best if this issue was dealt with by your IT department if such a service exists. Please understand that you must take responsibility for any data that may be lost due to the presence of any infections, or loss that may occur from cleaning the system. While there is only a small possibility of this happening, it is still a possibility and and must be understood that it could in fact happen.

If you can accept the responsibility, please proceed as follows:

Step #1: Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

*===============================================*

Step #2: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website to perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to your desktop by changing the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Now close the window.

*===============================================*

Step #3: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • A New Hijack This Log
  • Contents of the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log
  • Contents of the Kaspersky Online Scan Log

Thanks,
Ken

Hey Ken,

Yeah, I think for most companies you'd want to go to your IT dept. but I have minor confidence issues with my sys-admin. I completely understand about the loss of data but our code resides in a repository on another network.

Thank you again!
David

Re: Adware - Win32.TrojanDropper

Hi David,

Looks like Malwarebytes' found a couple of nasties. The stuff that Kaspersky found all appear to be false positives, stuff that is related to your business. I really am not seeing anything else in your HijackThis log. How is your system running? Are you still experiencing any problems? Let me know what kind of problems you are still having, and please describe how things are running.

Thanks,
Ken

It's running pretty well! The big problem was I clicked on a result on a Google search and wind up on porn site, which it quit doing last Monday (week ago, Monday) after Norton FINALLY got their stuff updated. Apparently they found some of it - but not all of it! (I have an anecdote for anyone who thinks "Symantec is King" as my sys-admin put it.)

If you don't see anything else to worry about, then I guess we can call it licked!

Thank you Ken for everything you've done! You've taught me a BUNCH on how to lick something like this.

Congratulations David, Your system appears to be clean! Image

Now that you are clean, I got some tips & tricks for you to keep your computer clean and secure. The first few (like Windows Update) have to be done, the others are optional.

It may seem like your system will be too much protected with all these things installed, but a lot of programs aren't running always on the background so don't slow down your computer. Please take a look at the following things:

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Update your Anti Virus Software - I would highly recommend that you set your Anti-Virus software to update automatically. Most Anti-Virus programs will update at least once a day, and frequently more than once a day. If you notice that it isn't updating itself regularly and frequently, you should check to make sure your anti-virus subscription has not expired (if it's a paid subscription) or that your settings have not spontaneously changed.

Turn on "Automatic Updates" - In order to make sure your system stays up to date, I recommend that you turn on the "Automatic Updates" feature. To turn on the "Automatic Updates" feature please do the following:
  • Click Start and choose Control Panel
  • In the control panel double click "Automatic Updates"
  • Make sure "Automatic (recommended)" is ticked
  • set the time that you would like to check for updates
  • Click "OK"

Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer including those for Microsoft Office, etc. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install WinPatrol - As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You can download it from this website:
WinPatrol
The developer is a well-known man in the MalWare Removal business. If you really like WinPatrol think about upgrading to the PLUS version. It will give you additional features and you will only have to pay once, for your whole malware-free life.

Download and Install a HOSTS File
A HOSTS file is a big list of bad web sites. The list has a specific format, a specific name, (name is just HOSTS with no file extension), and a specific location. Your machine always looks at that file in that location before connecting to a web site to verify the address. So the HOSTS listing can be used to "short circuit" a request to a bad website by giving it the address of your own machine.

Download BlueTack's HOSTS Manager here, using Internet Explorer (Firefox won't work):
http://www.bluetack.co.uk/forums/index. ... ils&f_id=5
A short distance down the page in the center, click on the Download button.
Agree to the license.
On the next page, to the right side of where it says Download Estimates, right click on the underlined word "Hosts Manager" choose "Save Target As" and download the installer Hosts20setup.exe to your desktop.
Double click the Installer on your desktop and let it Install the Hosts Manager

After the installation is complete, click on the Hosts Manager icon on your desktop. (You can right click/delete the other Hosts Switch icon from your desktop).
When the Hosts Manager comes up, click the small down arrows on the Right side of the bar labeled "Options and Tools",
Click Disable DNS Service. This is important
In the Left Pane, click Download.
It will load 80,000 lines or more. When it finishes, also in the left pane, click Replace, and then click Save.
You can use this manager to handle your HOSTS file download, edits, and most any other HOSTS issue.

If you have a separate third party Firewall or Winpatrol, you may have to give permissions at various times to Unlock the present default HOSTS file and install the new one.

Use an alternative Internet Browser - Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead:
Firefox << Most used, I use this one myself.
Opera

Bookmark general cleanup links - It could be that your computer is becoming slower and slower. This is not always the cause of malware. Most of the times it's malware when you're computer is suddenly getting slow or doing strange. When the slowdown increases slowly check (so now bookmark) these links for tips & tricks:
Help! My computer is slow
Slow Computer? Check here first; it may not be malware

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
