Hello and welcome to Malware Removal.

My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.

If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.

Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.

Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.

I will be back as soon as possible with your first instructions!

I'm afraid I have unpleasant news for you. You have a Very Dangerous infection on this machine.

The infection is delivered by Troj/Sdbot-LI

It allows outsiders COMPLETE access to every keystroke, account, and password you use while on this machine, and complete access to any other data present...
IF this computer has been used for any kind of important data, my best recommendation is to Disconnect from Internet, Re-Format the entire drive and re-install your Operating system and Applications.

We can likely clean the infected files off the computer, and if you wish we will attempt to do so, but we cannot be sure that the infection didn't do something to your system to reduce the system security. In that instance, even after removal of the infection, you could be subject to another attack or takeover as soon as you re-connect to the Internet.

The Decision Whether to ReFormat or Not should be based on:

  • The use of the computer - this is the primary factor in the decision whether to re-format and re-install, or just disinfect.

If the Computer has been used for any important data, you are strongly advised to do the following, immediately:

  • Disconnect the infected computer from the internet and from any networked computers until the computer can be cleaned.
  • Back up all important data on the machine. Do not back up any Applications (programs). Those should be re-installed from the original source CDs or websites.
  • If you have ever used this computer for shopping, banking, or any transactions relating to your financial well being:
Call all of your banks, credit card companies, and financial institutions, informing them that you may be a victim of identity theft, and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change ALL your online passwords -- for ISP login, email, banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, and any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new password and transaction information.
  • Take any other steps you think appropriate for an attempted identity theft.

While you are deciding whether to ReFormat and Re-Install, a useful link is here: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/10063
Please let me know what you decide.

Luckly, there isn't any important data on this laptop. It is my test laptop from work that I use for testing. So I guess disinfecting it would be fine.
Thanks!

Ok, then let's get to work.

Print out these instructions or save them into a notepad on your desktop, because you will not have internet access while in Safe Mode.

Step # 1: Download and Install SDFix
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Step # 2: Download and Run LSPFix

A malicious .DLL file is disrupting the LSP chain on your computer. We need to get rid of it.

  • Please download LSPFix from here.
  • Disconnect from the internet and run the LSPFix.exe that you have just finished downloading.
  • Check the I know what I'm doing box.
  • In the Keep box you should see one or more instances of mmchost.dll.
  • Select every instance of mmchost.dll and move each one to the Remove box by clicking the >> button.
  • When you are done click Finish>>.

Step # 3: Boot into Safe Mode

You can go in Safe Mode by restarting your computer, then continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.

Step # 4: Run SDFix
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.

Do this last step in Normal Mode:

Step # 5: Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. SDFix Report
2. Uninstall List
3. A fresh HiJackThis Log

Did you set the security settings to High in the Local Intranet zone in your browser as explained in this website? It's also possible that the malware you had/have on your computer was blocking you from downloading those programs I had you download last post. You did the right thing downloading them on another PC and transfering them over. :)

I went ahead downloaded the files on another PC but I do not know what to do on step 4. Can you clarify the instructions.
Thanks

First thing you do is open up Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK).

Once Notepad is open, take the mouse and click the words Select All on top of the Code box in Step # 4. This will highlight everything in the Code box. Then, right-click on the highlighted files/words and choose Copy.

Next, click on the Notepad Window you just opened up. Once there click File->Edit->Paste. That will paste in what you copied from the Code Box in Step 4.

Still in Notepad, Click on File > Save As....

In the File Name box that appears, copy and paste in fix.bat
In the Save as type box, select All Files from the drop-down list.

Click Save and save it to your Desktop.

Double click on fix.bat. A Command Prompt window will open and close quickly. That is normal

Do steps 1 to 3 first if you haven't already, before doing what I described above. Then do steps 5 & 6 and post back the OTMoveIT2 Log, MalwareBytes and HiJackThis Log for me too look over.

If you have any more questions let me know.

Step # 1 Update Adobe Acrobat Reader

There is a newer version of Adobe Acrobat Reader available. (See Note below)

  • First, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall all previous versions.
  • Please go to this link Adobe Acrobat Reader Download Link
  • On the right Untick Adobe Phototshop Album Starter Edition if you do not wish to include this in the installation.
  • Click the Continue button
  • Click Run, and click Run again
  • Next click the Install Now button and follow the on screen prompts

Note: Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.3 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

Step # 2: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply.

In your next post/reply, I need to see the following:

1. Kaspersky Log
2. A fresh HiJackThis Log
3. How is your computer doing, any problems?

Hmmm..that is strange, your previous HJT log says that you have Java installed on your computer. Let's try another online scan instead of Kaspersky.
