I have recently encountered a virus on my computer and am having trouble getting rid of it. I have 2 issues I think. First, I have a "WARNING! Spyware detected on your computer!" pop-up that has taken over my desktop. I believe this is the VBS/FakeAlert-AB virus. Second, after this reconfigures my desktop everytime I turn my computer on, McAfee detects the following: "Trojan.Gaslide.B" I run Spyware Doctor and it cleans it every time, saying it has been removed.

Hi flyers-fan,

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:

  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps

This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

We need to temporarily disable some security software as it may interfere with changes we need to make. We will re-enable these when we have finished cleaning:

Temporarily disable Windows Defender:
  • Right-click on the Windows Defender icon in the system tray and select Open
  • Click on Tools from the top menu, then press Options
  • Scroll down to Real-time protection options, uncheck Use real-time protection and press Save
  • Close Windows Defender

Temporarily disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%\SDFix
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please print/save a copy of the following instructions because we will be using Safe Mode, during which time you won't have access to the internet.

Now reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder (usually Start->My Computer->C:->SDFix and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
    (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

Download RSIT by random/random to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)

  • Double click RSIT.exe to start the program, and click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - log.txt <- this one will be maximized and info.txt <-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the SDFix report and both RSIT logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as RSIT produces one for you.

I can understand why you would want to reformat, I certainly would if it was my machine.

The most important things about reformatting are a) making sure you save all your data first, and b) making sure you have everything ready for the install.

I recommend you make an offline copy of your security software so you can install it before connecting to the internet. Also, I recommend you get your up to date with security patches before doing anything else online, it may take a while but until your machine is fully patched it is very vulnerable. You will however be safe at windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Thanks for the help so far. I am in the midst of reformatting, and things are going well. I also went out and bought a new system for doing secure transactions on the internet. My question though is, before i connect either one to the internet, i want to upgrade my firewall/internet security suite. Doing some research, I found Comondo is the best software firewall on the internet. I was using McAfee previously for everything.

My question would be, what would you recommend for my computer in order to ensure it remains secure? Thank you again for the help.

That's a difficult question as each system and user has different needs, but I can give you some general advice:

Basic protection is generally considered to consist of 1x antivirus program, 1x antispyware program - both of which have active protection - and a 3rd party firewall. Good additions to this would be a startup monitor, a custom hosts file and perhaps a browser add-on. Here are some specific recommendations:

Antivirus protection is simply essential in the current environment, and if you are looking for free packages, I can recommend these antivirus programs:

Running two or more antivirus programs at once can cause system problems so be sure to run only one.

Antispyware software helps protect you against a broader range of malware than would be covered by running only an antivirus program. A good free antispyware package is Windows Defender:

Comodo is a good choice for firewall and will give you excellent protection. As with any firewall program, you may need to put up with a alert notifications while it's 'learning' but after it settles down you will only be alerted when something out of the ordinary occurs.

The free version of WinPatrol is an excellent startup monitor and protects your computer in a variety of ways. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.

Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

This sounds like a lot of software but most modern PCs can handle all of the above with relative ease. More important than all the above is taking care online - extreme care with email attachments and links, ensuring you obtain all software from reputable sources, and keeping your system up to date with the latest security patches.
