'Anti Virus 2009' infection

Unread postby kates2787 » August 16th, 2008, 8:47 pm

Hi, yesterday our family pc wouldn't allow access to the internet unless we downloaded 'Anti Virus 2009' as it said we had loads of viruses, etc. I told my parents to leave it until I got back from work as I never trust these ads but as usual they tried to fix the problem themselves....... we've now paid £104 to have our computer well and truly infected with this virus. A phone call to the bank resulted in our cards being cancelled but its sorted out the £104 - now I just need advice on how to fix the pc as I'm so frustrated with it all I just don't know what to do.

I've spent a few hours searching for any sign of the programme and deleting everything I've found which matches the time the programme was created but I'm not convinced I've removed it all. An AVAST search found no trace but I don't think it would have been able to discover it anyway. I know a little about 'Hijack this' (HJT) software and after doing a scan AV2009 appears to have disappeared but there is one file I'm suspicous about.....

04-HKCU\..\Run:[ieupdate]"C:\WINDOWS\system32\ieupdates.exe"

Here is my HJT log - can anyone tell me whether or not my pc is clean?

Thanks in advance for reading and any suggestions offered.

Katie

Hello kates2787,

I will be assisting you with your malware issues.

  • Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! If you have any question or you're stuck in there please reply it to me. I will try my best to help you!
  • Please bookmark or favourite this page. In case you need it as reference or etc.
----------------------------------------------
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hello kates2787,

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
----------------------------------------------
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.

Hello kates2787,

Does your Panda Security includes a firewall?

Let's run also this scan to be totally sure you are clean.
----------------------------------------------
Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply.

Hello kates,

Can you please confirm if there is a firewall or not by asking them, otherwise you have to install an independant Firewall.
Just to let you know, in case you use Windows Firewall, it controls one way of the traffic (inbound). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

If it's not possible to confirm it now, let me know, i will give you some links for free firewalls, so you have them to install a firewall if needed.
----------------------------------------------
Please download ATF cleaner
Make sure that all browser windows are closed.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
----------------------------------------------
Now open Internet Explorer, go Tools Tab, Internet Options.
In General Tab, below Browsing History click on Delete.
In Next Screen click:
Delete files Opposite Temporary Internet Files
and Delete History as well.

Close and re-open Internet Explorer.
----------------------------------------------
Now re-run Kaspersky and post back the report.

Hi, I've been unable to download ATF Cleaner. The link downloads Registry Cleaner and there is no further mention of ATF Cleaner. Registry Cleaner does scan my PC but it requires a payment to repair the problems found. There is also no 'Main' or 'Select All' options. Is this the right thing I should download? Katie

Yeah I've got it now. I was clicking the wrong link  I'm really sorry but I'm going to be away from the PC until Sunday / Monday so will be unable to carry out your instructions until then. Will I need to close the topic and re-start once I am back? Sorry about this, Katie

Kates, we are almost done.

Kaspersky findings will be removed when you run ATF Cleaner.
But we need to make sure that they are.

We do tend to close threads after 5 days of no answer.
I hope this will be open when you are back.
Otherwise, just open another thread, to check again if everything is ok.
