Need help with a pesky Adware/Spyware removal!

Unread postby Reid Hill » August 14th, 2008, 11:30 pm

Need some help eliminating an irritating Ad-ware/Spyware pop-up that links to: hxxp://www.antispycheck.com/?aid=1012.
(I'm sure you guys are probably familiar with this outfit). There also is an icon in my system tool bar that constantly
alternates between a red 'X' and a blue ' ?'. If you click on it you will go directly to the site noted above. If you don't,
it seems to have a timer such that the pop-up continually comes up with a warning box stating:

"System Alert! System has detected
a number of active spyware applications
that may impact the performance of your
computer.Click the icon to get rid of
unwanted spyware by downloading an up
to date anti-spyware solution"

I'm new to your website and this is my first posting attempt. Thanks for any help you can give me!
My file is below:

Welcome Reid Hill

I will be helping you under the guidance of one of our expert coaches.
Please give me a little time to get back to you with instructions.

In the meantime please note the following:
  • Any recommendations made are for your computer problems only and should NOT be used on any other computer.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans/tools or other fixes unless I ask you to. This is very important for several reasons. Here are just two of them:
    1. The tools that we use are very powerful and can cause >>irreparable damage<< to your computer if not used correctly.
    2. Commercial scanners, for the most part can not completely remove some of the more "resistant" infections. This makes it much more difficult to get rid of completely.
  • If you get stuck or are unsure of something please ask for a further explanation, do not guess.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
Please Note: My instructions to you are checked by an expert prior to posting. This may cause a small delay between posts.
Thanks
John

Hello Reid Hill

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Backdoor Warning
Your computer has multiple infections, including a backdoor. A backdoor gives intruders complete control of your computer, logs your keystrokes, steal personal information, etc.

You are strongly advised to do the following:
  • Disconnect the computer from the Internet and from any networked computers until it is cleaned.
  • Back up all your important data except programs. The programs can be reinstalled back from the original disc or from the Net.
  • Call all your banks, financial institutions, credit card companies and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and put a watch on your accounts. If you don't mind the hassle, change all your account numbers.
  • From a clean computer, change all your passwords (ISP login password, your email address(es) passwords, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, Amazon, online groups and forums and any other online activities you carry out which require a username and password).
Do NOT change your passwords from this computer as the attacker will be able to get all the new passwords and transaction records.

Due to its backdoor functionality, your computer is very likely to have been compromised and there is no way that it can be trusted again. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be to do a reformat and reinstallation of the operating system (OS). We can attempt to clean this machine but I cannot guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

To help you understand more, please take some time to read the following articles:
What are Remote Access Trojans and why are they dangerous
How do I respond to a possible identity theft and how do I prevent it
When should I re-format and reinstall my OS
Where to backup your files
How to backup your files in Windows XP
Restoring your backups

Let me know what you would like to do.

Hi John,
I'm not really prepared to rebuild my computer right now. Let's see how we do with cleaning. I will also notify my bank, credit cards as you suggest and put a watch on everything......
Thanks!
p.s when I'm not doing something absolutely essential on the internet with the computer, I lock my firewall down....

SDFix
If you already have SDFix, delete it & download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Download SDFix by AndyManchesta and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on SDFix.exe. By default, it will install to C:\
  • Click on Install
  • Don't run it yet
Print out or save this set of instructions as you will not have internet access during the fix.
Restart the computer in Safe Mode
:!: Let me know if you can't boot into Safe Mode. Do not continue with the fixes.
  • When you see the BIOS screen, start pressing F8 repeatedly
  • A boot menu will appear
  • Using the up down arrows, select Safe Mode and press the Enter key
  • Windows will now load
  • Log in to your usual account
  • Navigate to C:\SDfix (if you installed it to the default location, otherwise, locate where you installed it)
  • Double click on RunThis.bat
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot
  • When the PC restarts the tool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished
  • Press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons
  • Once the desktop icons load, the SDFix report will open on screen. You can also find the report in SDFix folder, named Report.txt
  • Copy & paste the contents of the log in your next reply

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware here and save to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply
    Note:
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Or via the Logs tab when Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is started.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Due to lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
