Rundll32.exe in task manager

Unread postby atai » August 10th, 2008, 10:32 am

Hi,

There are three rundll32.exe in the task manager which cannot be terminated. Whenever those process are running, my system gets instable and I couldnt access to some webpages, like searching in google or yahoo email.
I scan with nod32 and three viruses were identified and quarantine, but was unable to be removed:
The three viruses are:
Win32/adware Virtumonde application
INF/Autorin virus
Win32/Small.R virus

My nod32 constantly blocks attack from adware virtumonde application, slowing down my system significantly.

Below is my Hijackthis log:

I followed your instructions, however I was unable to find the svchost.exe file under C://WINDOWS/system. I did a search and the only svchost.exe file is located under system32. In the system folder, there is one folder named _sv_CMD_ with one file U.exe instead.

Thanks

OK, it looks like that file was already deleted

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

- rundll32.exe appear in the task manager again
- my automatic update was turned off
- cpu load at 100% from time to time, system slows down significantly
- pop-up of fake anti-virus commercials
- internet explorer at its lowest privacy setting regardless

however my nod32 has not blocked any attack

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt

Post back with the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log and a new HijackThis log.

before trying out malwarebyte's anti-malware, I perform the SDFix again, removed my IE 6 and swapped to firefox 3.0.1. Since then tshows no symptoms of virus infection. No slow down, no rundll32.exe and no random pop-ups. I did a scan with nod32 and there is no sign of infection nor any kind of attack blocked.

I wonder if IE 6 has a security hole for adware virtumonde application to infect my system?

Anyway thanks for the great help. Great Courtesy of the staff in this site.

If all the security updates are installed, then Ie6 shouldn't have any known security holes.

It's probable that there's quite a few vundo files scattered around, so it would still be agood idea to do the malwarebyte's antimalware scan.

My nod32 discovered a lot more virus after using malwarebyte's anti-malware:

- Win32/Adware.BHO.NDA application
- Win32/Perlovga.A virus
- Win32/Perlovga.B virus
- Win32/TrojanDropper.Small.APL trojan
- Win32/Small.LO virus

Above are all under C:\System Volume Information\_restore..., is this normal?

Re: Rundll32.exe in task manager

Unread postby random/random » August 16th, 2008, 2:55 pm

My nod32 discovered a lot more virus after using malwarebyte's anti-malware:

- Win32/Adware.BHO.NDA application
- Win32/Perlovga.A virus
- Win32/Perlovga.B virus
- Win32/TrojanDropper.Small.APL trojan
- Win32/Small.LO virus

Above are all under C:\System Volume Information\_restore..., is this normal?

C:\System Volume Information\_restore is the folder where restore points are kept, so you don't need to worry about those.

You have more than one antivirus installed:

NOD32
Norton Antivirus

You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.

Please choose the antivirus that you wish to keep and uninstall the others.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Run HijackThis.
Click on Do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines (if still present).

Then close all windows except HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post, along with a new HijackThis log and a description of any remaining problems.

It checks for infected file and produces a log showing which files are infected. The infected files can then be manually deleted.

Due to lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
