Help please with Vundo infection

Unread postby ColBla » August 12th, 2008, 2:03 pm

Hi folks

I'm looking for some help please with what I think is a Vundo infection. Story so far:
1. Windows Defender suddenly started identifying Vundo infections. Additionally, in one of the 4 user accounts on the machine (not an Admin account), the user gets a DLL error immediately after logging-on. Something is trying to find the file "opnkjghf.dll", and can't.
2. Tried scanning with McAfee (my normal AV) - didn't detect anything, let alone remove it.
3. Tried scanning with "Windows Live OneCare", as recc. by Defender. This identified several instances of Vundo, variants .gen!E, .gen!G, & .gen!T. However it was unable to clean these.
4. Consulted the good folks at MS Support forums, who suggested trying Malware Bytes Anti-Malware (MBAM). Did this, and ran it a total of three times, cleaning each time, at the end of which there were no more detections.
5. However, the affected user account still throws up the DLL error, from which I assume there is still something unpleasant lurking. So I guess it's time to get some specialised help.

So I need some help please with getting rid of whatever it is I've got, and also advice on how to stay clean in future (McAfee having failed dismally). HJT log follows:

Hello ColBla,

JavaRa

Please download JavaRa and unzip it to your desktop.

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***

  • Double-click on JavaRa.exe to start the program.
  • From the drop-down menu, choose English and click on Select.
  • JavaRa will open; click on Remove Older Versions to remove the older versions of Java installed on your computer.
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location.

Then download and install Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 following the instructions below:
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and click on Download button.
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer
----------------------------------------------
Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix at your DESKTOP:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
A word of warning: Please do not run ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

Additional links to download the tool:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Note: The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.
----------------------------------------------
Post back:
JavaRa report.
Combofix report.
A new HijackThis log.

Unread postby ColBla » August 16th, 2008, 4:10 am

Good morning Chryssi2001

Sorry if these are dim questions, but I want to make absolutely certain I know what I'm doing before I do it:

1. I'm slightly puzzled about the instructions to close Internet Explorer. Both your instructions and the ComboFix guide say this right near the top, but then go on to instruct me to visit websites and download the relevant programs - how do I do this without IE running ? Is there some other clever way to do this, or should I interpret the instructions as "Use IE to download & save all the necessary programs, but close IE before actually running them or doing any scanning" ?

2. You also say "Close/disable all AV & anti-malware programs ..." Several questions here:

2.1. The ComboFix guide provides a useful page (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) with further instructions. I use Mcafee Security Centre, and the instructions say to right click the red M in the system tray and select "Exit". Problem is I don't get an Exit option on the right-click menu. If I open Security Centre, I get options to close down all the available protection services separately - is that what I have to do ?

2.2 Should I close down the Mcafee firewall as well ?

2.3 I'm slightly nervous about having no protection at all whilst I have a live internet connection to post the logs back to you - at what stage is it safe to turn these things back on ?

3. Finally, all the dire warnings about the possibility of something going wrong make me a little concerned that I'm not going to have a working PC when I've done. If so I won't be able to get back in touch via this forum - is there an alternative way of contacting you ?

Cheers

Hello Colin,

Ok, do not worry.

Here we go.

If you want you can print all my previous instructions so it will be easier for you.
You follow them exactly how i say. Read them carefully.

You first download JavaRa, and run it as i explain, and update your Java which is a very old version.

Then reboot. (You can post the report later.)

When you are done from that, you download Combofix on your desktop.
Download Recovery console.

Get offline.

Disable all your protection programs. (they might interfere)
As for your Mcafee, open the program and check if you can find an exit at any of the tabs.
Or go start > Programs > Find Mcafee and click exit.

Drag Recovery console icon like in the image on Combofix, and let Combofix run.
Do not touch anything untill the tool Finishes.
It will open a report.
Enable your protection programs.
Come on line.

Then post back the report.

3. Finally, all the dire warnings about the possibility of something going wrong make me a little concerned that I'm not going to have a working PC when I've done. If so I won't be able to get back in touch via this forum - is there an alternative way of contacting you ?

This is very rare.
But if this happen can you find another pc, and post what happened?

Thanks. Not going quite as advertised, and I want to double-check before I do something stupid.

1. Have done the JavaRa bit & JRE update OK. Also downloaded ComboFix & got a desktop icon. So far so good.

2. Tried to instal the Recovery Console, and it didn't go exactly as per the instruction. The ComboFix guide sends you to this webpage (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994) to download the Recovery Console - but the page seems to be all about set-up disks, and I'm not sure this is the same thing ? Anyway I downloaded the appropriate file to my desktop (XP Home, SP2). When I dragged the MS file onto the ComboFix icon, I did not get any messages about the Recovery Console being installed - in fact ComboFix started to run (before I'd shut down all the protection programs) by giving me the warranty disclaimer. At this point I aborted Combofix by saying I didn't accept the disclaimer, and the ComboFix icon promptly disappeared from my desktop.

So I'm left not knowing whether the Recovery Console is installed, and whether it's safe to continue.

You did it a little mixed up.

After you downloaded Combofix and Recovery console, you should go offiline, disable your programs as per my latest post instructions, and the drag Recovery console on Combofix.
--------------------------------------
Now please disable your protection programs, and drag Recovery Console on Combofix, and let it run.
If it asks you to install Recovery Console click yes and it will do.

We can install it later, the report will show if it's installed or not.

Hi again

You're dead right, if I'd followed your instructions I'd have got it right first time ! The ones in the ComboFix guidance document are subtly different. Learnt my lesson ! Was also a bit unprepared for the reboot in the middle of Combofix. This (a) gave me a bit of a dilemma in that - despite the "don't touch anything" instruction, I had to actually log into my account (4 user accounts on the PC) and (b) I think my AV & Firewall restarted automatically at the reboot. Don't know whether any of that affected the results; logs follow:

Hello Colin,

You did fine. You disabled Mcafee properly, and installed Recovery Console.
C:\Documents and Settings\Colin\Desktop\WindowsXP-KB310994-SP2-Home-BootDisk-ENU.exe
5. However, the affected user account still throws up the DLL error, from which I assume there is still something unpleasant lurking. So I guess it's time to get some specialised help.

Time to ask. Do you still get that error? I believe you are not any more.
----------------------------------------------
FIX HIJACKTHIS ENTRIES

Open up Hijackthis.
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

O15 - Trusted Zone: http://*.update.microsoft.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://download.windowsupdate.com

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis.
----------------------------------------------
Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
----------------------------------------------
Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner
Note: Internet Explorer should be used.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

Done all that:

I do still get the error message. I've uploaded a WORD File containing a screen shot so you can see exactly what it looks like (at least, I think I have). Out of the four user accounts on the PC, only one of them ("Tom") gives this error immediately after logon.

Have updated Adobe reader and run Kaspersky. Horrified to discover that that found something else, not the original Vundo problem at all.

Apart from the DLL error message, the PC seems to be behaving normally. New logs follow:

Cleaned the cache as advised. At least, I did this for my account (Colin), which is where Kaspersky reported the infected files - should I do it for the other user accounts as well ?

Have run ATF Cleaner successfully.

DLL error message persists in Tom account. Tried to run HJT from there, but I got a series of error messages about HJT not being able to access files, and I didn't get a log file. Tom's account is not an admin account - is this relevant ? How do I run HJT in that account - do I have to download HJT anew into that account or is there some other adjustment I need to do to give it access to all the files it needs ?

Can you run ATF from Tom's account?
Login as Tom and run ATF.

Or try this if you still see the error:
----------------------------------------------
Set Your Computer to Show All Files
  • Click Start.
  • Click My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
  • Uncheck Hide protected operating system files (recommended).
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Uncheck the Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK.
In addition, go to Start, Search.  When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom.
Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.
----------------------------------------------
Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following file: if found, delete the following (some may not be present after previous steps):

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\Tom\LOCAL SETTINGS\Temp\opnkjghf.dll
----------------------------------------------
If still problems, right-click on HijackThis, click on Run as and in the box that appears, tick "The following user" and if Tom's name shows there select it, put password if needed and click ok.
That way you maybe able to run HijackThis.
Give it a try.

Chryssi2001

I'm afraid I'm struggling here

Can't run ATF from Tom's account - I downloaded it to the desk top in my account (Colin) and it doesn't appear in the list of programs so can't find it from Tom's account.

Have set the "Show all files" settings in both accounts.

The DLL file isn't in the location you suggest - remember the error message says that it couldn't be found. I assume that some other process is also searching for it in that location and can't find it, so perhaps some prior cleaning activity has already removed it.

Have tried the "Run as ..." trick with HJT, and I don't get the option of running it as Tom - that account is not in the drop down. Have tried running HJT from his account, and have taken screenshots of the error messages I get - see attachment.
