Welcome WhitesRUs
I will be helping you under the guidance of one of our expert coaches.
Please give me a little time to get back to you with instructions.

In the meantime please note the following:
  • Any recommendations made are for your computer problems only and should NOT be used on any other computer.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans/tools or other fixes unless I ask you to. This is very important for several reasons. Here are just two of them:
    1. The tools that we use are very powerful and can cause >>irreparable damage<< to your computer if not used correctly.
    2. Commercial scanners, for the most part can not completely remove some of the more "resistant" infections. This makes it much more difficult to get rid of completely.
  • If you get stuck or are unsure of something please ask for a further explanation, do not guess.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean!
Thanks
John

Create an Uninstall List
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file
  • When you press the Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file
  • Copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in your next reply

Hello WhitesRUs
I apologise for the late reply.

MRU P2P Policy
IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Peer to Peer) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Limewire

I'd like you to read the MRU policy for P2P Programs.
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Once Limewire has been removed reboot your computer.

Deckard's System Scanner (DSS)
Download Deckard's System Scanner here & save to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post in your next reply.

Hello John

No need to apologise about late reply, I understand you are helping a number of people concurrently.

My apologise about "LIMEWIRE", I agree about P2P sites, but my 2 teenage daughters have a different opinion. Program now deleted.

I attach both DSS text files you requested below.

Hello WhiteRUs

Logs are looking good. How's everything running?

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version: Adobe Reader 9
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed Uncheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.3 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware. Click Quarantine>Delete All then Exit.

Fix HiJackThis Entries
  • Open HiJackThis
  • Click on do a system scan only
  • Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present):

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

  • Close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
  • Click Yes when prompted
  • Close HijackThis.

ATF Cleaner
Download ATF Cleaner here by Atribune.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Reboot your computer.

Kaspersky Online Scan
Do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As...
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button
  • Please post this log in your next reply along with a new HJT log.

Hi John

I have carried out all your instructions up to and including ATF Cleaner. However, when I try to run Kaspersky Online Scan the program tells me I must install Java version 1.5 or higher to run Kaspersky Online Scanner. When I click on the link to do this, a Java program tells me I have version six, update 7 already installed and no new updates are availalbe.

I have re-installed the Java program but Kaspersky Online Scan stills tells me to install the program. Advice please?

PS The pc is running well and the annoying warning box, blue screen and false error messages and fake windows startup page have stopped.

Hi Robert
Haven't heard of this before with Internet Explorer. I know there are some problems with Firefox of the type your mentioning. The only thing I can suggest is to remove the older versions of Java that are on your system & try again with Kaspersky:
Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
Remove these programs by clicking Remove

Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_01
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5

If that doesn't work try this:

Please go to Eset website to perform an online scan. Please use Internet Explorer as it uses ActiveX.

  1. Check (tick) this box: YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  2. Click on the Start button next to it.
  3. When prompted to run ActiveX. click Yes.
  4. You will be asked to install an ActiveX. Click Install.
  5. Once installed, the scanner will be initialized.
  6. After the scanner is initialized, click Start.
  7. Uncheck (untick) Remove found threats box.
  8. Check (tick) Scan unwanted applications.
  9. Click on Scan.
  10. It will start scanning. Please be patient.
  11. Once the scan is done, you will find a log in C:\Program Files\esetonlinescanner\log.txt. Please post this log along with a new HJT log in your next reply.

Removed the 4 old Java programs, but same error box from Kaspersky regarding needing to install v1.5 or higher. Therefore used Eset website as requested and both log files listed below.

Robert

Re: Please help with Antivirus XP 2008 removal

Unread postby jmw3 » August 12th, 2008, 12:12 am

Hi Robert
Eset picked up a couple of things, nothing major.

Delete Files
Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following file: if found, delete it

C:\Documents and Settings\TaZ\Desktop\BSINSTALL.exe

We also need to clean out the Java cache:
  • Click Start>Control Panel then click the Java icon to open the Java Control Panel
  • Click the General tab
  • Under Temporary Internet Files click Settings
  • Click Delete Files...
  • Click OK twice to exit the Java Control panel

Post a new HJT for review & let me know how your computer is running or any problems.

Hi John

Deleted BSintall.exe and Java cache as requested.

Computer seems to be running fine, only problem is not being allowed to run Kaspsrsky on line because of the 'install v1.5 or higher' prompt. Would it help to delete Java altogether and then re-install?

New HJT log file attached.

Re: Please help with Antivirus XP 2008 removal

Unread postby jmw3 » August 14th, 2008, 6:36 pm

Hi Robert

I apoligise again for the late reply.

Good to hear your pc is running OK. I wouldn't worry to much about the Kaspersky Scanner. If the current version of Java is not causing problems for anything else on your computer, I'd be inclined to uninstall the Kaspersky Scanner rather than Java. The scanner is a tool we use for analysis more than anything else. It doesn't actually remove anything. If you want to remove it just go to Add/Remove Programs & uninstall it.

You should also delete the following tools from your desktop:
DSS.exe
ATF-Cleaner.exe

Other than that your last HJT log appears to be clean. Well done. Here's some recommendations to help keep it that way.

Create a Clean System Restore Point
Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Set Correct Settings For Files That Should Be Hidden In Windows XP
  • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
  • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
  • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK

Make your Internet Explorer more secure
Open Internet Explorer click Tools > Options > Security tab > Internet icon to highlight > Custom Level, then select the following options:-
Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
Click OK, then Apply > OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Microsoft Windows Update
Microsoft releases patches for Windows and Office products regularly to patch up Windows and Office products loopholes and fix any bugs found. Please ensure that you visit the following websites regularly or do update your system regularly.
Install the updates immediately if they are found. Reboot your computer if necessary, revisit Windows Update and Office update sites until there are no more updates to be installed.
To update Windows
Go to Start > All Programs > Windows Update
To update Office
Open up any Office program.
Go to Help > Check for Updates
Alternatively, you can visit the links below to update Windows and Office products.

Firewall
Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of a third party firewall.
As the term conveys, a firewall is an extra layer of security installed onto computers, which restricts access to systems from the outside world. Firewalls protect against hackers and malicious intruders. I want you to download a free firewall NOW from one of these excellent vendors:
1) Comodo
2) Sunbelt/Kerio (Free 30 day full featured evaluation)
3) Agnitum
If you are using the built-in Windows XP firewall, it is not recommended as it does not block outgoing connections. This means that any malware on your computer is free to "phone home" for more instructions. Simply put, Windows XP contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. Remember to use only one firewall at the same time.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee. Tutorial on installing & using this product can be found below:
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Setup Guide
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scanning Guide

SpywareBlaster
Download and install Javacools SpywareBlaster from here
SpywareBlaster adds a list of ActiveX controls, tracking cookies and sites which will be blocked in either Internet Explorer or Firefox browsers. You need to manually check for updates regularly.

Install WinPatrol
Download it here
You can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Download & read Tutorial here here
NOTE : Be sure to disable the service "DNS Client" FIRST to allow the use of large HOSTS files without slowdowns.
If this isn't done first, the next reboot may take a VERY LONG TIME.
This is how to do it. First be sure you are signed in as a user with administrative privileges:
Stop and Disable the DNS Client Service
  • Go to Start, Run and type Services.msc and click OK
  • Under the Extended Tab, Scroll down and find this service - DNS Client
  • Right-Click on the DNS Client service
  • Choose Properties
  • Select the General tab & click on the Stop button
  • Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side at the Start-up Type box
  • From the drop-down menu, click on Manual
  • Click the Apply tab, then click OK

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Read some information here on how to prevent Malware.

Hopefully these steps will help keep your computer clean.
