Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is peku006 and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Please observe these rules while we work:

  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

I am currently looking at your log now and will be back as soon as possible with your instructions.

Thanks

Hi Patty

1 - SmitfraudFix
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

2 - uninstall list

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

3 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

4 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the SmitfraudFix log(C:\Rapport.txt)
2. the uninstall list
3. a fresh HijackThis log

Thanks peku006

Hi,

Sorry it has taken me so long to get this part done, work, other obligations, etc. My computer still keeps locking up and behaving badly. I have tried all types of repair and registry clean programs but nothing helps. It just freezes up totally and task manager, my mouse, etc does not respond so I have to hold the power button till it goes off. Any ideas? Do I need to buy more RAM?

Thanks,

Patty

Hi Patty
Let us take a deeper look.......

1 - Clean temp files

    Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

    Under Main choose:
      Windows Temp
      Current User Temp
      All Users Temp
      Temporary Internet Files
      Prefetch
      Java Cache

      *The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.
    if you use Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.
    if you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
      Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program

2 - Download and Run DSS

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save to your Desktop.

DSS will do the following:

  • Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, Internet Cache Files, and empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for an analyst to review.
  • Automatically run HijackThis. It will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed. So if HijackThis is not installed and DSS prompts you to download it, please answer yes.
You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges when using.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open in Notepad:
  • main.txt <- this one will be maximized
  • extra.txt <- this one will be minimized
  • If not, they both can be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder.
  • Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
-- When running DSS, some firewalls may warn that it is trying to access the Internet especially if your asked to download the most current version of HijackThis. Please ensure that you allow it permission to do so.
-- If you get a warning from your anti-virus while DSS is scanning, please allow DSS to continue as the scan is not harmful.

3 - Status Check
Please reply with

Deckard's System Scanner main.txt and extra.txt

Hi,

Gosh, what a bunch of gobblety goop.

FYI---I am using a wireless n adapter (belkin) and accessing the web for free due to a not-so-smart neighbor. I have had 2 wireless G's which I have not been able to uninstall from my computer. I get an error message...An installation support file could not be installed. The system cannot find the file specified. Don't know what info you need from me but I am pretty bright so just tell me what you need and I'll get it to you.

Thank you so much for your time!

Patty

Hi Patty

which one you will uinstall ? ( Belkin F5D8053 N Wireless USB Adapter or Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter)

1 - Remove bad HijackThis entries
  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

      O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

2 - Fix file associations with DSS

  • Click Start and then Run to bring up the Run box.
  • Copy and paste the contents of this quote box into the run box:
    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft
  • Click OK.
  • Click OK to the prompt from Deckard's System Scanner.
  • Click Scan.
  • Place a tick next to the following entries (if they are present).
    .js
    .reg
    .scr
    .vbs
  • Click Fix

3 - Kaspersky Online Scan

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply.

4 - Run Hijackthis
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad

5 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the daft.txt ( Deckard's System Scan )
2. the Kaspersky online scanner report
3. a fresh HijackThis log
description of any problems you are having with your PC

Hi peku60,

I will try to uninstall the Wireless G's because I no longer own either of the G's. I just had IE shut down on me and Microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, used the opportunity to download their verification tool and then service pack 3. Guess what?? Yuppers!!! SP 3 caused a lockup and I had to manually shut my system again. I will follow the new steps you posted and send the info you requested asap.

Thank you!

Patty :duckie:

Hi again,

Here are the logs for Kaspersky and Hijackthis. The first three logs, however, are some kind of DSS logs and are iffy. I do not have or could not locate anything resembling a daft.txt file anywhere. I did click on fix at the end of step 2 but did not have a log pop up at all.

BTW.........The Kasperly Antivirus scan took over 5 hours to scan my computer. WOW!! I was shocked it did not lock the system up during that time. It usually freezes when I leave it unattended for just minutes and not hours like this was. Thank you again for all the time you are giving me. :colors:

The problems I have been having are:

    Locking up or freezing up.
No Disk error messages on start up.
Missing drivers for an AGP video card that is installed and for some odd reason now is not found under hardware. It won't permit me to play some newer games and I get an error message "No compatible display devices found."
Too many start up programs, I think, because it takes forever and a day.
    Not enough Ram???

Yours truly,

Patty :colors:

Hi Patty

Locking up or freezing up.
No Disk error messages on start up.
Missing drivers for an AGP video card that is installed and for some odd reason now is not found under hardware. It won't permit me to play some newer games and I get an error message "No compatible display devices found."

I don't believe those issues are malware related, there’s something wrong with your Device Manager

Do you know what this file is?

C:\WINDOWS\DisableDrWatson[1].reg
------------------------------------------------------------------
1 - Backup Your Registry with ERUNT
  • Please use the following link to download ERUNT
  • Use the setup program to install ERUNT on your computer
Click Erunt.exe to backup your registry to the folder of your choice.

Note:to restore your registry, go to the folder and start ERDNT.exe

Open Notepad!
Copy and Paste everything from the Quote box into Notepad:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"NoDevMgrPage"=dword:00000000

Make sure there are NO blank lines before REGEDIT4
Make sure there IS one blank line at the end of the file.

Go to File > Save As
Save File name as Fix.reg
Change Save as Type to All Files and save the file to your desktop.

Close Notepad, and double-click Fix.reg on your Desktop. When it asks if you want to merge the info to the registry, hit YES/OK. Reboot the computer.

2 - Run DSS
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt

You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

3 - Status Check
Please reply with

Deckard's System Scanner main.txt

The disable Dr watson was a suggestion from microsoft in response to an IE has to shut down error report.

I backed up the registry as instructed...

I double click on fix.reg and the document just opens and sits there. If I right click I get a merge option but not what to merge to. ?????? I copied and pasted it into notepad but when I save it as fix.reg with type all files it also wants a coding type. Used ANSL and Unicode but no go on merging with registry.

Help!

Hi Patty

The disable Dr watson was a suggestion from microsoft in response to an IE has to shut down error report

OK
coding type

it´s Ansi

let´s try this:

Please open up Notepad and copy all of the items in the code box below.
Change the "Save As Type" to "All Files". Save it as fix.reg on your Desktop.
Make sure there is NO blank line above "REGEDIT4"!

Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"NoDevMgrPage"=dword:00000000

Locate fix.reg on your Desktop and double-click on it. When it asks if you want to merge with the registry, click YES.

reboot the PC
