Unidentified Virus Trying to Access my E-mail

Symptoms: after visiting a website, my computer shut down. When I turned it on again, I got a message informing me that Outlook needed me to open it and select it as the default mail server to perform the tasks I had given it. Fortunately, since I do not and have never used Outlook, or any other e-mail program, I believe that the computer has failed to carry out the commands of whatever malware it has contracted. Nonetheless, this message asking me to configure Outlook now pops up every now and again. I have also noticed that my computer is taking a longer time than previously to load and log in to Windows. I would like to remove the malware because I do not know what else it could be doing and am concerned.

I am running Windows XP Pro. Based on skimming these forums, I have run Ewido, which identified a bunch of pernicious cookies, but has not fixed the problem. I have scanned my Task Manager and used Process Explorer, but saw nothing obviously malware.

RENAME HIJACKTHIS

Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe

Right-click on HijackThis.exe & select Rename to scanner.exe.

Do not run it yet.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
• The log can also be found here:
  C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
• Post that log back here.
