Recently the computer sound and internal card reader have stopped working. It is sounding like an physical problem, but I often get a lot of adware, tracking cookies and other problems because my wife is required to use IE for her job. Also, I have completed an online Kaspersky scan. It found "Trojan-Downloader.JS.Agent.hv" and "not-a-viruss:AdWare.Win32.Agent.aeh" Both of which my Norton did not find, so i thought there may be more damaging things that I don't know about.

I also had 2 folders in my C: drive that were just number/letter combinations and locked (access denied). When I looked them up on the internet, It was reported that they were viruses. I unlocked them and deleted them. But again, Norton did not locate them as a virus.

Finally, although I keep the trash (cache) cleaned with CCleaner, I assume that most of these problems could be solved with a more accurate virus scan, is there one out there you would suggest? Or is it better to have multiple scanners (i.e. Norton, Kaspersky, Trend, etc)?

Thanks a lot for all your help.
SJ_Sharker

Sorry, after I finished my post, my wife told me that the computer in general is running slower than usual. So I guess you can add that to the list of what is going on.

Also, some background info is that the computer is an HP dv6000 with AMD Turion64x2 at 1.61 GHz with 992 MB ram. The computer is only about a year and a half old...

Thank you again for your help...

Hi

"Also, I have completed an online Kaspersky scan. It found "Trojan-Downloader.JS.Agent.hv" and "not-a-viruss:AdWare.Win32.Agent.aeh" Both of which my Norton did not find, so i thought there may be more damaging things that I don't know about."

Please post back then kaspersky report :=

"I assume that most of these problems could be solved with a more accurate virus scan, is there one out there you would suggest? Or is it better to have multiple scanners (i.e. Norton, Kaspersky, Trend, etc)?"

Do you mean antiviruses by scanners?`Only one antivirus should be in use.

Slowness is likely due to too many startup programs; I give you tips for what to remove a bit later :)

Thank you for getting back to me... Yes I did interchange the word scanner with anti-virus programs. I will take your advice to use only one anti-virus program, but which one? Also, does that mean I should not have a program like AdWare (Lavasoft) or SpySweeper running or at least installed for a random scan?

As far as the Kaspersky scan report, I will have to do another one to get the results again. It is running as I type this to you. When i get the results, I will post them. The first scan I did took about 2 hours.

Thank you for helping me out. The information you give me will help with other computer problems on my computer as well as friends. Thanks again.

You have currently Norton installed and if it's up-to-date, I see no reason to change it. You can have one antispyware program running along with antivirus like SpySweeper. For scanners, I give you later some recommendations :)

Empty this folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine\

Delete this:

C:\Program Files\Online Services\PeoplePC\ISP5900\Branding\ppal3ppc.exe

Still concerns?

The access is denied for the quartentine folder... I tried to change the owner of the folder, but that was denied as well.

Also, as I tried to do that, I noticed that the administrator was both me and another name (TOPPER). so it looks like this TOPPER/SJ_Sharker

Any help???

Thank you... I was able to delete those files in safe mode. How else can I speed up the computer... You said something about having too many things running in the background. Can you help with that?

Thanks

Yes, you can disable these via HijackThis (final choice is of course yours; first create own folder for HijackThis to desktop):

I don't see any option to disable these items. Should I fix checked? or delete an NT service? or add to ignore list???

Yes, you should do this:

Open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark those.

Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.
