Spyware Dialer

Unread postby tylyn » July 26th, 2008, 12:39 am

My computer has been very slow lately, like when I close out IE it takes forever to close. I ran my virus scan and it found nothing. I downloaded a spyware program and it scanned my computer, but it wouldn't remove the spyware unless I purchased it. It found ISTbar, and some kind of Dialer HC and alot of others. So I went and downloaded 2 more spyware programs that were free to use but they didn't find any of the those things so I assume they are still in my computer. I have included my Hijack this log below. Thanks

Hi tylyn,

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Ok I ran the DSS like you said but when it finished there was only the main.txt. I looked for the extra minimized one but it wasn't there.

Re: Spyware Dialer

Hi tylyn,

I'd like to see both full reports before continuing, please try this:

  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Press the Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
  • A configuration box will appear, make sure all boxes are checked press Scan!

Re: Spyware Dialer

Unread postby silver » August 3rd, 2008, 4:14 am

Hi tylyn,

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and remove the following:
FrostWire 4.17.0
Full Tilt Poker
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 4
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Frostwire needs to be removed as site policy is to require users to remove all P2P programs as part of cleaning.

Full Tilt Poker has been reported as being associated with malware, so you should remove it.

The Java installations are out of date and now a security risk, you already have the latest version installed Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 - don't remove that one.

Viewpoint Media Player is not malware but is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Media Player.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Temporarily disable WinPatrol:
  • Open WinPatrol via the Start Menu or by double-clicking the taskbar icon
  • Select the Options tab and un-check the box marked Automatically run WinPatrol when computer starts
  • Close WinPatrol

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {24180B00-2EB6-11d7-BD6F-004854603DCE} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F0D4B231-DA4B-4daf-81E4-DFEE4931A4AA} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {381FFDE8-2394-4f90-B10D-FC6124A40F8C} - (no file)
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0003-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_03) -
O16 - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0005-ABCDEFFEDCBA} (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_05) -
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} -
Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fix file associations with DSS:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft
  • Press OK to the disclaimer(s) and then press Scan
  • Place checkmarks in all the boxes that appear and press Fix
  • Then close Deckard's System Scanner

------------------------------------------------------------------------

You have a custom hosts file installed, so we will now make sure that the DNS Client service is disabled, otherwise this can severely slow your machine down:

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
Code: Select all
@echo off
sc config dnscache start= disabled
sc stop dnscache
sc query dnscache >> "%userprofile%\desktop\results.txt"
reg query "HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\services\dnscache" /v start >> "%userprofile%\desktop\results.txt"
del runme.bat

Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open the ESET Online Scanner in Internet Explorer
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use. and click Start
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed by Internet Explorer
  • Once the ActiveX has finished loading click Start to initialize and update the scanner
  • When the Computer scan screen appears, leave Remove found threats UN-checked, but check the box next to Scan unwanted applications. Then click Scan to begin the scan.
  • Once complete and the summary page appears, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    notepad "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt"
  • The log file should now appear in Notepad, copy and paste the contents in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the results.txt output, the Eset report and a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know if you had any problems with the instructions, and if there has been any change to the symptoms.

Re: Spyware Dialer

Unread postby silver » August 3rd, 2008, 8:55 pm

Hi tylyn,

The reports look better, has there been any change to the symptoms?

  • Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to both of these options:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When finished, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to your Desktop, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found here if you need it:
    • Start->All Programs->Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware->Logs

Once complete, please post the Malwarebytes Antimalware report and a new HijackThis log.

Hi tylyn,

It looks like a part of the Malwarebytes Antimalware report is missing - the report shows 1 file infected but "Files Infected" section is missing. Please open the program, choose the Logs tab, open the most recent report and re-post it for me to see.

but it still takes my homepage a minute to come up
Does the slowness occur with a different home page or a blank page for a home page?

Hi tylyn,

Please delete dss.exe from your Desktop, also delete this folder:
C:\Deckard

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Re-enable WinPatrol:
  • Open WinPatrol via the Start Menu or by double-clicking the taskbar icon
  • Select the Options tab and check the box marked Automatically run WinPatrol when computer starts
  • Close WinPatrol

------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the above went well, I think your machine is clean of malware :)
If you are still not satisfied with how your machine is running, I think the problems are not malware-related. For further assistance with this I recommend posting on a PC troubleshooting forum like the Browsers, Internet & email forum at WhatTheTech. The experts there specialize in handling problems like this so you are certain to get expert assistance and a speedy resolution is very likely.

Here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Find out more about how to prevent infection in the future

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
