Audio being played w/o media player being started

Unread postby Joe41 » July 26th, 2008, 5:47 pm

Hello,

I think there is some malware on my pc. It had just been woken up from suspend and I hadn't started any programs when it started playing something that sounded like a tv program. It lasted about 5 seconds. When I checked task manager, it showed an 'application' called dpwoeB9eA as the only thing running besides Win Task Manager. When I right clicked the application and selected 'go to process', the process name was 'cexwxfst.sys'. The application started and stopped several times all by itself. I ended it once with Task Manager, but it came back. I then shut off the wireless adapter (the pc is a laptop) to try and prevent a spread to the other pc on the home network. After the application turned itself on and off about 10 times, I haven't seen it again, nor has any audio played.

I ran adaware personal and it only found some cookies. Spybot S & D found a couple more cookies. I scanned with AVG personal and the pc crashed with a blue screen (I don't recall exactly, but it said something like boot_caller_ ...Don't know why I didn't write it down.) A second scan with AVG found a couple more cookies.

I think I got infected when a guest used the pc a couple of days ago and used IE to go to facebook, Youtube, and I don't know where. Normally, I only use Firefox.

Thanks in advance for your help.

As a side note, I won't be able to respond to any posts July 28 - July 30

Joe

Hi Joe,

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Silver, while I was posting, Spybot S&D's teatimer popped up a message that Quicktime was trying to change the registry so it starts at boot up. I denied the registry change.

Thanks again for the help.

Hi Joe,

First we need to temporarily turn off some of your protection software so it doesn't interfere with the changes we need to make:

Temporarily disable Windows Defender:
  • Right-click on the Windows Defender icon in the system tray and select Open
  • Click on Tools from the top menu, then press Options
  • Scroll down to Real-time protection options, uncheck Use real-time protection and press Save
  • Close Windows Defender

Temporarily disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident "Tea-Timer"(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
Code: Select all
@echo off
FOR %%G IN (
AFinding
NOBICYT
perfmons
Routing
WServing
) DO (
sc stop %%G >> results.txt 2>>&1
sc delete %%G >> results.txt 2>>&1
)
FOR %%H IN (
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\afinding.exe"
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\Nobicyt.exe"
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\perfs.exe"
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\routing.exe"
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\wserving.exe"
) DO (
attrib -r -h -s %%H
del /q /f %%H
echo %%H >> results.txt 2>>&1
dir %%H >> results.txt 2>>&1
)
del runme.bat

Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the results.txt output and a new HijackThis log.

I notice that part of ZoneAlarm is running. I have it set not to start at boot up because my wife didn't like the queries to allow or not (she is the main user of this pc). The pc has been using the built-in Windows firewall since I disabled ZoneAlarm. I've seen recommendations to Comodo in this forum. Would it or ZoneAlarm have prevented this infection?

I'm curious, what was this malware trying to accomplish?

Thanks for your time - Joe

Hi Joe,

Would it or ZoneAlarm have prevented this infection?
Probably not, but it may have contained the infection. A malicious program was somehow executed on your computer, a firewall can't protect against this happening, this is what active protection from antivirus and antispyware programs is designed to prevent. However, a third party firewall can warn you about and block malware trying to access the internet thereby preventing an infection from getting worse.

I'm curious, what was this malware trying to accomplish?
Most of the malware on your system is designed to work in the background downloading more malware, some of which may be picked up by your security software, some not. The ultimate purpose is usually monetary gain by installing various types of adware on your computer or stealing personal information. At this stage there is no sign of any password-stealing or keylogging activity, but we're not through cleaning yet.

Hi Joe,

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and remove the following:
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7) from here

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fix file associations with DSS:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft
  • Press OK to the disclaimer(s) and then press Scan
  • Place checkmarks in all the boxes that appear and press Fix
  • Then close Deckard's System Scanner

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
Code: Select all
@echo off
dir "dpwoeB9eA*.*" /a /s >> results2.txt 2>>&1
dir "cexwxfst.sys" /a /s >> results2.txt 2>>&1
dir "dimsntfy.dll" /a /s >> results2.txt 2>>&1
del runme.bat

Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results2.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open the ESET Online Scanner in Internet Explorer
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use. and click Start
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed by Internet Explorer
  • Once the ActiveX has finished loading click Start to initialize and update the scanner
  • When the Computer scan screen appears, leave Remove found threats UN-checked, but check the box next to Scan unwanted applications. Then click Scan to begin the scan.
  • Once complete and the summary page appears, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    notepad "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt"
  • The log file should now appear in Notepad, copy and paste the contents in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the results2.txt output, the Eset scan log and a new HijackThis log.

I noticed that Quicktime is running in the background. I don't think it used to. Is that something the malware changed? Once the clean-up is all done, I will use sysinternal autoruns to disable Quicktime from starting at boot-up, unless you recommend another approach.

I'm looking forward to the "All Clear" signal. Thank you for your diligence.

Hi Joe,

It's possible that the malware has changed something to do with Quicktime, but I doubt it. However, I do know that simply running the Quicktime program can cause it to create a new startup entry. If you are using Autoruns to manage your startups you may need to repeat the disabling process over and over. There is a program called WinPatrol which I believe is designed to notice when disabled startups are replaced and remove them again. It is an excellent program and I recommend you give it a try, however it monitors similar things to Tea Timer so you should only have one of these two running at once. I will give you some more information on this program once we have finished.

I'm looking forward to the "All Clear" signal. Thank you for your diligence.
You're most welcome :) How is your machine running now? If the symptoms are now gone then we are almost ready to finish up :)

I'm terribly sorry but there was an error in my previous post, so I have to ask you to repeat one part of the instructions:

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
Code: Select all
@echo off
dir "C:\dpwoeB9eA*.*" /a /s >> results3.txt 2>>&1
dir "C:\cexwxfst.sys" /a /s >> results3.txt 2>>&1
dir "C:\dimsntfy.dll" /a /s >> results3.txt 2>>&1
del runme.bat

Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results3.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

Once complete, please post the results3.txt output and a new HijackThis log. Also, let me know how your machine is running now.

Re: Audio being played w/o media player being started

Unread postby Joe41 » August 2nd, 2008, 1:05 pm

Hi Silver,

The pc has only been used about 45 minutes since the last runme.bat was used, but it seems to be 100% normal!

FYI, yesterday, before using OTMoveit2, the pc played random audio again. I started Win Task Manager to see what was running. Under applications, nothing showed while the audio was playing, but under processes, tcexfst.sys was using some cpu capacity. I mention it because the file name is similar to cexwxfst.sys and I thought it might be an evil twin.

Here are the two latest logs:

Re: Audio being played w/o media player being started

Unread postby silver » August 2nd, 2008, 10:05 pm

Hi Joe,

I'm glad things are running better, but we have a bad file to remove and you could well be correct about "tcexfst.sys" - we shall check it out.

First, please run another batch file as follows:

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
Code: Select all
@echo off
attrib -r -s -h C:\WINDOWS\system32\cexwxfst.sys >> results4.txt 2>>&1
del /q /a /f C:\WINDOWS\system32\cexwxfst.sys >> results4.txt 2>>&1
dir C:\WINDOWS\system32\cexwxfst.sys /a >> results4.txt 2>>&1
dir C:\*xfst.sys /a /s >> results4.txt 2>>&1
copy C:\WINDOWS\system32\tcexfst.sys "%userprofile%\desktop\tcexfst.vir" >> results4.txt 2>>&1
copy C:\WINDOWS\tcexfst.sys "%userprofile%\desktop\tcexfst.vir" >> results4.txt 2>>&1
copy C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\tcexfst.sys "%userprofile%\desktop\tcexfst.vir" >> results4.txt 2>>&1
start notepad results4.txt
del runme.bat

Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results4.txt, it should open automatically in Notepad when ready, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

If a new file called tcexfst.vir appears on your Desktop, please upload it as follows:
Open this page in your browser:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit- ... channel=32
Click the Browse button, browse to and select the tcexfst.vir file on your Desktop, press OK and then press Send file, this will upload the file for analysis

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the results4.txt output and a new HijackThis log.

Re: Audio being played w/o media player being started

Unread postby silver » August 2nd, 2008, 11:37 pm

Hi Joe,

OK we're nearly there :)

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
Code: Select all
@echo off
attrib -r -s -h C:\WINDOWS\system32\ceswxfst.sys >> results5.txt 2>>&1
del /q /a /f C:\WINDOWS\system32\ceswxfst.sys >> results5.txt 2>>&1
dir C:\WINDOWS\system32\ceswxfst.sys /a >> results5.txt 2>>&1
attrib -r -s -h C:\WINDOWS\system32\tcexfst.sys >> results5.txt 2>>&1
del /q /a /f C:\WINDOWS\system32\tcexfst.sys >> results5.txt 2>>&1
dir C:\WINDOWS\system32\tcexfst.sys /a >> results5.txt 2>>&1
del runme.bat

Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results5.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download F-Secure Blacklight to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double click fsbl.exe to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop containing a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, make a new main.txt with DSS:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Press the Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
  • A configuration box will appear, make sure all boxes are checked in the Main Log section, then un-check everything in the Extra Log section and press Scan!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the results5.txt output, the Blacklight report and the new DSS main.txt report, you won't need to make a new HijackThis log as DSS includes one in the report.
