Generic FakeAlert.b an W32/Nuwar@MM and possibly more?

Unread postby jonquest » July 30th, 2008, 9:06 pm

I know I have or had "Generic FakeAlert.b" and "W32/Nuwar@MM" on my computer. Just got infected today and don't know what to do. McAfee said that it detected the problem and caught the trojans, and even quarantined them... but apparently that did not work and still ended up infected. So here I am.

Can you please help me?

Here is my HJT log...

Hello, and welcome to Malware Removal Forums.
My name is Matt and I will be assisting you with your malware issues.
Please be patient as I need some time to review your HijackThis log and I will post back recommendations for repairs.
As I am still on training, everything that I post to you, must be checked by a Teacher. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long.

  • Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! If you have any questions or you're stuck in there please reply it to me. I will try my best to help you! Not having symptoms of malware doesn't mean that you are clean!
  • Please do not carry out tasks on your own before I reply as this will only complicate things and may mean that my instructions are useless or dangerous!
  • Please bookmark or favourite this page. In case you need it as reference or etc.

Hi

Please download Vundofix from here

  • Right-click VundoFix.exe and select Run as Administrator to run it (please allow any Vista UAC prompts)
  • When VundoFix opens, click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note:It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove. In this case, VundoFix will attempt run on reboot, simply follow the above instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when VundoFix appears at reboot.

*If VundoFix gives an runtime error on startup you are most likely missing the file: comdlg32.ocx A new copy and instructions on where to put it can be found HERE

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Right-click mbam-setup.exe and select Run as Administrator, allow any Vista UAC prompts then follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
    The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\<User name>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Copy and Paste the log into your next reply

===============================
In your next reply can I please see the following:
  • vundofix.txt
  • mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • a new HijackThis log

I am working on this as we speak, but I wanted to make sure of something... do you want me to run a HijackThis log before I run Malawarebytes or after?

Before I go further, the VundoFix did not find anything... does that change anything you need me to do? I didn't end up with a log for this.

Re: Generic FakeAlert.b an W32/Nuwar@MM and possibly more?

Unread postby jonquest » July 31st, 2008, 6:29 pm

Just so you know, after the malwarebytes ran, I had to reboot my computer. When the computer rebooted I got an error about some .dll not working right and a couple of my startup programs were blocked. I'm figuring that this is all part of the process, but I want to make sure...

Hi
How is your PC behaving now?

Download OTMoveIt2 by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
Code: Select all
hkcu\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run\\cmds
hkcu\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run\\msserver
C:\Users\jonquest\AppData\Local\Temp\hgGvtSjK.dll
C:\Users\jonquest\AppData\Local\Temp\awtsPICV.dll

  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.
  • Close OTMoveIt2

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<- this one will be minimized.
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your reply.

===============================
In your next reply can I please see the following:
  • OTMoveIt2 log
  • DSS main.txt and extra.txt

Here is my OTMoveIt Log... I will follow up with the DSS log once I run it. Figured I might as well get this here first. By the way, my computer is running MUCH better. Thanks for all the work. Looking forward to the "all clear" soon... I hope.

Hi
Please note I am away until Sunday evening

DSS must be located on your desktop for the following instructions to work

Click start and in the search box type in exactly:

"%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft

Then press Ctrl+Enter at the same time and allow the Vista UAC prompt

Read the disclaimer and click OK.
  • Click on the Scan button.
  • Place a checkmark next to the following entries in case they appear:
      .cpl
      .reg
      .scr
  • Click the Fix button.
  • Re-scan and save a logfile. By default, it will save as daft.txt
  • I'll need that log later.
If everything is ok again, it should display the "all associations ok message"

Post back with the contents of daft.txt.
