First of all, Hello, and thanks for reading this post.

Lately my system has become slow and sluggish and can remain unresponsive for a few minutes at a time, which is very odd. I decided to run SpyBot S&D, which found a few errors, including the key logger H@tkeysh@@k (which I’ve been searching, and found a variety of sources which either say it’s part of game trainers or it’s malware). I then ran HJT:

I run Vista Home Premium, with Avast! Anti virus, and the stock firewall, which A do intend to replace with ZoneAlarm. In task manager, I notice that RAM usage is very high (80%-90% of 2GB, very much out of the nor) and that CPU load can reach as high as 30%, just on the desktop (Qx6700 @ 3.6Ghz) again, out of the norm. This started to happen around a week ago, were a noticeable difference in speed was felt while loading up COD 4.

Anything else I can help with?

EDIT I know I have limewire and utorrent on the computer, came with it I think, I just haven't got around to removing them. Will it be beneficial to remove them now or just leave it until later?

Should I post what Spybot found?

Once again Thank you for reading this

Have a nice day!

EDIT
As per forum sticky, I connect to the internet via a router.

Hi! Welcome to the forums.
My name is Scotty. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research.
Please be patient.

Please make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

Hi

You still have Norton leftovers. Run the removal tool

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Lets run an F-Secure online scan it will scan for Viruses, Spyware and RootKits:
  • Scroll to the bottom of the page and click the Start Scanning button. A window will pop up.
  • Allow the Active X control to be installed on your computer, then click the Accept button
  • Click Full System Scan and allow the components to download and the scan to complete.
  • If malware is found, check Submit samples to F-Secure then select Automatic cleaning
  • When cleaning has finished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post
If Automatic cleaning with Submit samples hangs, click Cancel, then New Scan
  • When the cleaning option is presented, Uncheck Submit samples to F-Secure
  • Click Automatic cleaning
  • When cleaning has finished, click Show report (this will open an Internet Explorer window containing the report)
  • Highlight and Copy (CTRL + C) the complete report, and Paste (CTRL + V) in a new reply to this post

Note: This scan will only work with Internet Explorer.
You must be logged on a administrator rights to run this scan.
The scan may take a few hours.

Re: Possible Malware/spyware infection

Hi

Firstly, that file F-Secure found appears to be a legit file for SWAT4, so lets not worry about that. I see nothing else but we can take a closer look.
And if you still have the report, post the Spybot findings.

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. For Vista users, right-click DSS and select Run As Administrator
  4. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  5. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your next reply

I'd like to continue looking, please, as I am still getting high CPU and RAM loads, and random internet drop outs.

Here's a screenshot of Spybot S&D:

And here's my DSS log:

Hi

Im still not convinced about that SoftwareProtection thing.

  1. Click here to go to Spykiller.
  2. In the Name box, type in your name.
  3. In the Email box, type in your email address.
  4. In the Subject box, copy and paste in File for analysis.
  5. In the big text box, copy and paste this into the box: Link to log:http://malwareremoval.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=32974
  6. Type in the Visual Verification.
  7. In the first Attach box, copy and paste this in: C:\Windows\SoftwareProtection\Windows External Security Update.exe
  8. Click on Post.

If you get a reply, let me know.

This was the reply:

http://thespykiller.co.uk/index.php/top ... w.html#new

File: Windows External Security Update.exe
Size: 636127
MD5: 07E78D9EE52337C521020C52819AB69A

Probable malware - similar to IM-Worm.Win32.VB.ev

Python coded.

Please follow up back in your forum thread.

I suggest your helper to review this again:

O23 - Service: @%SystemRoot%\system32\aelupsvc.dll,-1 (AeLookupSvc) - Unknown owner - C:\Windows\system32\svcjost.exe (file missing)

What should I do now?

1 - FindFile
Download FindFile by Atribune from >here<
  • Extract the contents to your Desktop
  • Double click on FileFind.exe to open the program.
  • Enter C:\Windows\system32\svcjost.exe into the File: box.
  • Click on the Search button.
  • After a while a list of file locations will appear in the List of Files: box.
  • Click on the Export button.
This will create a Notepad file named Export.txt located in the C:\ folder, copy and paste it to your next post please.

Re: Possible Malware/spyware infection

Unread postby Khorne » July 28th, 2008, 2:04 am

I'm having a bit of trouble with this step, I downloaded it, and ran it, but everytime I do run it, it stops responding, or when I press search it doesn't do anything, well it appears that way. If it is working, it doesn't find any files, and no log is generated. I run Vista, any ideas about what I'm doing wrong?

I did however, when googling find the file svchost, (and when going through the location manually) and maybe thought you meant svchost instead of svcjost.

When searching for the file with the location eg: C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe I found nothing, but when just searching for svchost.exe I found three matches:

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\b2ee164db645e6bc8d77bb51f082e3b3\x86_microsoft-windows-services-svchost_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.18000_none_b5bb59a1054dbde5\svchost.exe - 21504 Bytes

C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe - 22016 Bytes

C:\Windows\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-services-svchost_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6000.16386_none_b38497a50862ad11\svchost.exe - 22016 Bytes

Now, I'm not expert (that's why i asked you =P) but I do believe svchost should only be found in the system32 folder, otherwise it could be malicious?

Hi

svchost is fine, it was the file svcjost which is connected to that bad 023 I wanted to see if it was still there. Findfile probably doesnt work on Vista though. No matter, Ill add it for deletion anyway.

Disable Teatimer
First:

  • Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident

Second:

  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

OTMoveIt2 -

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, please right click on OTMoveit2.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    Code: Select all
    C:\Windows\SoftwareProtection\Windows External Security Update.exe
    C:\Windows\system32\svcjost.exe
    C:\VundoFix Backups
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\\system34

  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be Moved" window (under the light blue bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • A log of files and folders moved will be created in the c:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Post that log back here with a new HijackThis log and the OTMoveIt log.

It looks as though most of the items in that "SoftwareProtection" were made not that long ago, about the time I downloaded some cod 4 components to help build a mod. I'm not sure if those files have any importances, but if they don't I'm fine with deleting them.
