Have annoying popups and can't remove them

Unread postby londahail » July 25th, 2008, 11:42 am

I use Firefox and am having a problem with frequent pop ups in IE window, and they are getting worse.
This is a typical popup: hxxp://url.adtrgt.com/cpv.jsp?p=112086& ... Id=7124487
Although there are others, some that say "multipopups" and other redirects. I even tried to remove IE in order to eliminate the popups, but it obviously did not uninstall fully.
I have tried Exterminate This and other things and nothing seems to work.
I'm techno-challenged, so any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Hi londahail

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  1. Close all applications and windows.
  2. Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  3. When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  4. Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt to your post.

The following are the logs, as requested. Just noticed references to AOL/Yahoo Messenger/Logitech QuickCam/Kodak Easy Share. I don't use AOL/haven't used messenger in ages/thought I had uninstalled quickcam as I no longer have the webcam/Don't have or use kodak easy share.
Thanks.

Hi

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

Log follows; computer was rebooted after log was copied. I could not find a log that had been appended after reboot.
It appears that the pop ups have been eliminated as I have yet to have one appear as I have been online to post this.
Thank you.

Re: Have annoying popups and can't remove them

Unread postby Shaba » July 29th, 2008, 1:02 am

Hi

Some leftovers there:

Go to Start > Run
Type regedit and click OK.

  • On the leftside, click to highlight My Computer at the top.
  • Go up to "File > Export"
    • Make sure in that window there is a tick next to "All" under Export Branch.
    • Leave the "Save As Type" as "Registration Files".
    • Under "Filename" put backup
  • Choose to save it to C:\ or in somewhere else safe location so that you will remember where you put it (don't put it on the Desktop!)
  • Click Save and then go to File > Exit.

Open Notepad and copy the contents of the following box to a new file.

Code: Select all
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa]
"Authentication Packages"=hex(7):6d,73,76,31,5f,30,00,00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\dcajotfh]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\olwkywlg]

Save it as fix.reg (save type: "All files" (*.*)) to your desktop.

It should look like this -> Image

Go to Desktop, double-click fix.reg and merge the infomation with the registry.

(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Reboot.

Re-run dss.

Post back a fresh dss log.

Due to Lack of Response this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
