HijackThis Log File - SPYMAXX hack?

Unread postby Ailleurs » July 22nd, 2008, 5:11 pm

Hope someone can help. This one has taken over as administrator and I have a permanent red window named "Windows Security Center system warning" (letter case exactly as I spelled it). (Having accidentally clicked this window trying to move it out of the way, it took me to a website advertising SPYMAXX software). I also keep getting little pop-up ballons on the lower right of the screen telling me that I have spyware and/or fatal errors or my computer is running slowly "Click here to download..." or "Click here for more information...". My desktop backround photo has been replaced with all light blue with a "Spyware threat" warning in the middle.

I've been instructed by TrendMicro to delete or "fix" the BHO files using HijackThis. I've done it 3 times already and they keep coming back.

Welcome to the MWR forums. My name is Bio-Hazard. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research. Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues this may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear.
  • Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • I f you don't know or understand something please don't hesitate to ask.
  • It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Note: I am still in training here at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

Uninstall list

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis. To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

SDFix
If you already have SDFix, delete it & download it again as it's being updated regularly.
Download SDFix by AndyManchesta and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on SDFix.exe. By default, it will install to C:\
  • Click on Install
  • Don't run it yet
Print out or save this set of instructions as you will not have internet access during the fix.
Restart the computer in Safe Mode
:!: Let me know if you can't boot into Safe Mode. Do not continue with the fixes.
  • When you see the BIOS screen, start pressing F8 repeatedly
  • A boot menu will appear
  • Using the up down arrows, select Safe Mode and press the Enter key
  • Windows will now load
  • Log in to your usual account
  • Navigate to C:\SDfix (if you installed it to the default location, otherwise, locate where you installed it)
  • Double click on RunThis.bat
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot
  • When the PC restarts the tool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished
  • Press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons
  • Once the desktop icons load, the SDFix report will open on screen. You can also find the report in SDFix folder, named Report.txt
  • Copy & paste the contents of the log in your next reply

DSS

Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

  • Please download Deckard's System Scanner from HERE and save it to your desktop.
  • Save all your work and close all opened programs.
  • Double click on dss.exe to run it. Follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two log files will be produced. The first one, main.txt, will be maximized, the second one, extra.txt, will be minimized.
  • Please post the contents of the 2 log files in your next reply.

Logs/Information to Post in Next Reply

Please post the following logs/Information in your reply:
  • SDFIX Report
  • DSS Logs, the first one, main.txt, will be maximized, the second one, extra.txt, will be minimized.
  • A fresh HijackThis Log ( after all the above has been done)
  • How are things running now ?

I do not appear to be having any more probelms at the moment. All of the pop-ups are gone, the balloons are gone, I have a picture on my desktop again, and I can access my Windows Task Manager. I understand that whatever I had may not be fully gone, but I am going to try to run my machine as I normally do. I will post any further problems. Please let me know what to do next and when.

Thank you so much :D

I apologize for the delay. I had a death in the family and all the arrangements were made out-of-state. I haven't had the access or the time to work on my computer this week. I'll get back to it first chance I get. Thank you for your patience :)

Thanks again for your patience. As I hope you understand, the circumstances were out of my control.

Everything seems to be working fine. I haven't received an "All Clear" from you yet. Are there any other programs that you would like me to run?

Your log now appears to be clean. Congratulations!

You can get rid of the tools we used:

Download OTCleanIt by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.

  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe
  • Click the CleanUp! button
  • Select Yes when the Begin cleanup Process? Prompt appears
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (I would recommed to keep this program)

This is how you can uninstall it:
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present):

    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints Malware Complaints. You need to be registered to post as, unfortunately, we were hit with too many spam posts to allow guest posting to continue. Just find your country room and register your complaint.

    General Security and Computer Health
Below are some steps to follow in order to dramatically lower the chances of reinfection. You may have already implemented some of the steps below, however you should follow any steps that you have not already implemented.

    • Clear Infected System Restore Points
      • Turn System Restore off
      • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
      • Click Properties.
      • Click the System Restore tab.
      • Check Turn off System Restore.
      • Click Apply, and then click OK.
        Restart your computer
      • Turn System Restore on
      • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
      • Click Properties.
      • Click the System Restore tab.
      • Uncheck *Turn off System Restore*.
      • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Note: only do this once, and not on a regular basis

    • Set correct settings for files
      • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
      • Under Hidden files and folders if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
      • If unchecked please check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
      • If necessary check Display content of system folders
      • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
      • Click OK

    • Make sure that you keep your antivirus updated
New viruses come out every minute, so it is essential that you have the latest signatures for your antivirus program to provide you with the best possible protection from malicious software.
NOTE: You should only have one antivirus installed at a time. Having more than one antivirus program installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as impairing the performance of your PC.
    • Install and use a firewall with outbound protection
The Windows firewall only monitors incoming traffic, NOT outgoing. Using a software firewall in its default configuration to replace the Windows firewall greatly reduces the risk of your computer being hacked. Make sure your firewall is always enabled while your computer is connected to the internet.
NOTE: You should only have one firewall installed at a time. Having more than one firewall installed at once is likely to cause conflicts and may well decrease your overall protection as well as seriously impairing the performance of your PC.
    • Security Updates for Windows, Internet Explorer & Microsoft Office
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will usually create a patch so that after the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC. Keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malicious software being installed on your PC. Ensure you are registered for Windows updates via Start > right-click on My Computer > Properties > Automatic Updates tab or visit the Microsoft Update site on a regular basis.
NOTE: The update process uses ActiveX, so you will need to use internet explorer for it and allow the ActiveX control to install.
    • Update Non-Microsoft Programs
Microsoft isn't the only company whose products can contain security vulnerabilities. To check whether other programs running on your PC are in need of an update, you can use the Secunia Software Inspector - I suggest that you run it at least once a month.
    • Make Internet Explorer More Secure
You are using Internet Explorer v. 7. Therefore please read and follow the recommendations at this SITE

    Recommended Programs

I would recommend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (if not already present), and the updating of them on a regular basis.

    • WinPatrol
As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. For more information, please visit HERE.
    • SpywareBlaster
SpywareBlaster sets killbits in the registry to prevent known malicious ActiveX controls from installing on your computer. If you don't know what ActiveX controls are, see HERE. You can download SpywareBlaster from HERE.
    • Hosts File
For added protection you may also like to add a host file. A simple explanation of what a Hosts file does is HERE and for more information regarding host files read HERE.
    • Use an alternative Internet Browser
Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead:
      Firefox
      Opera

Finally I am trying to make one point very clear. It is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to keep all of your security programs up to date.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can be closed.

Happy surfing and stay clean!
