Hi thom15,

Please tell me what the problem you are reporting concerning "blank.com".

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and remove ArcadeRockstar

Viewpoint Media Player is nor malware but is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Media Player. You can remove Viewpoint via Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar =
R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: ArsPlugin Class - {DABE0C57-5B57-4E2D-837A-08F290F7458E} - C:\Program Files\ArcadeRockstar\arsplg.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E291663A-2D6F-4B56-B9DF-AE239AEF6A5B} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: Viewpoint Toolbar - {F8AD5AA5-D966-4667-9DAF-2561D68B2012} - C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Toolbar\ViewBar.dll (file missing)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2DEA8791-C2B7-48E1-8992-8E8E6A6FE789} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [arcaderockstar] C:\Program Files\ArcadeRockstar\arcaderockstar32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CompanionWizard] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Companion Wizard\compwiz.exe" /silent
O16 - DPF: {1D4DB7D2-6EC9-47A3-BD87-1E41684E07BB} - http://ak.imgfarm.com/images/nocache/fu ... .0.8-2.cab
Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Use Windows Explorer (right-click Start, select Explore) to find and delete the following folders:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Companion Wizard
C:\Program Files\ArcadeRockstar
If you have trouble finding or deleting any, please let me know in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Clean with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Please download the Installer to your Desktop from here:
    http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to both of these options:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick Scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When finished, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to your Desktop, and post the contents in your reply.
  • The log can also be found here if you need it:
    • Start->All Programs->Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware->Logs

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the MalwareBytes Antimalware report and both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Hi thom15,

Open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following line:
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2DEA8791-C2B7-48E1-8992-8E8E6A6FE789} - (no file)
Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Fix file associations with DSS:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /daft
  • Press OK to the disclaimer(s) and then press Scan
  • Place checkmarks in all the boxes that appear and press Fix
  • Then close Deckard's System Scanner

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
Code: Select all
@echo off
sc stop FOPN >> results.txt 2>>&1
sc delete FOPN >> results.txt 2>>&1
sc stop vspf >> results.txt 2>>&1
sc delete vspf >> results.txt 2>>&1
sc stop vspf_hk >> results.txt 2>>&1
sc delete vspf_hk >> results.txt 2>>&1
dir "%userprofile%\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs" >> results.txt 2>>&1
dir /a "%programfiles%\win*.*" >> results.txt 2>>&1
dir /a "%systemroot%\system32\stera.exe" >> results.txt 2>>&1
del runme.bat

Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.
Post the contents of this file in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open the ESET Online Scanner in Internet Explorer
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use. and click Start
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed by Internet Explorer
  • Once the ActiveX has finished loading click Start to initialize and update the scanner
  • When the Computer scan screen appears, leave Remove found threats UN-checked, but check the box next to Scan unwanted applications. Then click Scan to begin the scan.
  • Once complete and the summary page appears, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    notepad "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt"
  • The log file should now appear in Notepad, copy and paste the contents in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the results.txt, the Eset scan log and a new HijackThis log.
Also, please describe how your computer is behaving now.

Hi thom15,

I'm sorry to hear you had some difficulty with the Eset scan, and the results.txt output isn't as expected, please try this:

Attached to this post is a file called runme.zip, please download it to your Desktop:
runme.zip

Right-click runme.zip and choose Extract All..., follow the prompts and a new folder will be created on your Desktop containing a file called runme.bat
Double-click runme.bat - a black box will open and close and then Notepad will open with a file called results.txt - please post the contents of this file in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Next, we will try a different scan:

Download Dr.WEB CureIt to your desktop from here:
ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe
  • Double-click cureit.exe to start the program.
  • Press Start and then OK to start the Express scan
  • The Express scan takes just a few moments to finish, if something is found, click Yes to cure it
  • Once the short scan has finished, Click Options->Change settings
  • Choose the Scan tab and UN-CHECK Heuristic analysis
  • Choose the Actions tab and make these changes:
    • Next to Infected objects select Report
    • Next to Incurable objects select Report
    • Next to Infected containers select Report
  • At the bottom-left, UN-CHECK Prompt on action, then press OK to close the settings box.
  • Note: These settings changes are IMPORTANT, please ensure you have made them before scanning
  • Then select Complete scan and press the green arrow to start the scan
  • When the scan is complete, click File-> Save report list, save the report to your desktop and close Dr Web CureIt

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the results.txt output, the Dr Web report and a new HijackThis log.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Hi thom15,

Please continue with these instructions after the weekend:

Please download OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to start the program.
  • Copy the lines in the OTMoveIt file list below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    OTMoveIt File List:
    Code: Select all
    C:\WINDOWS\aac.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\exactoffer.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\exactoffernew.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\nexus.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\nexus8.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\zgbinvite.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\Norton AntiVirus\Quarantine
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Then click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of it and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • If OTMoveIt asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report will appear in Notepad after the reboot.
  • Close OTMoveIt2

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please download F-Secure Blacklight to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double click fsbl.exe to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop containing a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the OTMoveIt report, the Blacklight report and a new HijackThis log.

Hi thom15,

Clean up with OTMoveIt2:
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTMoveIt2 as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTMoveIt main screen, press the CleanUp! button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Please also delete Dr Web CureIt from your Desktop.

Once complete, please tell me if you had any problems with the instructions and tell me what symptoms are still present.

Hi thom,

I'm glad to hear things are running better, and at this stage I think your machine is clean of malware :) here are some tips to help you keep your computer clean:

You have a good antivirus program installed, however I recommend you install antispyware software with real-time capabilities - this means it protects you from system changes and spyware while you are working, not just removing malware after it has been installed. There are a range of paid-for and free packages available, a free one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/securit ... fault.mspx

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Find out more about how to prevent infection in the future
http://users.telenet.be/bluepatchy/miekiemoes/prevention.html

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.

Hi thom15,

If you installed the MVPs hosts file, please make sure you disable the DNS Client service:

Stop and Disable the DNS Client Service
Go to Start, Run and type Services.msc and click OK.
Under the Extended Tab, Scroll down and find this service.
DNS Client
Right-Click on the DNS Client Service. Choose Properties
Select the General tab. Click on the Stop button.
Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side at the Start-up Type box.
From the drop-down menu, select Disabled
Click the Apply tab, then click OK

At this stage your machine looks to be clean of malware, so the problems you are experiencing are not likely to be malware related. Therefore, I think the best and fastest solution for you is to post on a PC troubleshooting forum like the Microsoft Windows forum forum at WhatTheTech. The experts there specialize in handling problems like this so you are certain to get expert assistance and a speedy resolution is very likely.

Please let me know if we can be of further assistance.
