Hi Robert,

Please open this page in your browser:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit- ... channel=32

Copy/paste the following into the Browse to the file you want to submit field:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiebbar.dll
Then press Send File, this will upload the file for analysis

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis, choose Do a system scan only and place a checkmark next to the following lines:
O16 - DPF: {85D1F3B2-2A21-11D7-97B9-0010DC2A6243} (SecureLogin class) - http://secure2.comned.com/signuptemplat ... -devel.cab
O16 - DPF: {8AD9C840-044E-11D1-B3E9-00805F499D93} (Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2) - http://javadl-esd.sun.com/update/1.4.2/ ... s-i586.cab
O16 - DPF: {DF780F87-FF2B-4DF8-92D0-73DB16A1543A} (PopCapLoader Object) - file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Good%20Times/Local%20Settings/Application%20Data/Oberon%20Media/Oberon%20Games%20Host/popcaploader_v6.cab
O18 - Filter hijack: text/html - {64b8dd45-a562-4007-8b82-da8311378567} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiebbar.dll
Then close all open windows apart from HijackThis, press Fix checked, OK the prompt and close HijackThis.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Hi Robert,

An entry is proving a little stubborn, please try this:

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
Code: Select all
@echo off
reg export "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter" "%userprofile%\desktop\export1.txt" >> results.txt 2>>&1
reg export "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{64b8dd45-a562-4007-8b82-da8311378567}" "%userprofile%\desktop\export2.txt" >> results.txt 2>>&1
reg delete "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/html" /f >> results.txt 2>>&1
reg delete "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{64b8dd45-a562-4007-8b82-da8311378567}" /f >> results.txt 2>>&1
reg export "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter" "%userprofile%\desktop\export3.txt" >> results.txt 2>>&1
reg export "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{64b8dd45-a562-4007-8b82-da8311378567}" "%userprofile%\desktop\export4.txt" >> results.txt 2>>&1
dir /a "C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiebbar.dll" >> results.txt 2>>&1
del /q /a /f "C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiebbar.dll" >> results.txt 2>>&1
dir /a "C:\WINDOWS\system32\msiebbar.dll" >> results.txt 2>>&1
type "%userprofile%\desktop\export1.txt" >> results.txt 2>>&1
type "%userprofile%\desktop\export2.txt" >> results.txt 2>>&1
type "%userprofile%\desktop\export3.txt" >> results.txt 2>>&1
type "%userprofile%\desktop\export4.txt" >> results.txt 2>>&1
del /q "%userprofile%\desktop\export1.txt" >> results.txt 2>>&1
del /q "%userprofile%\desktop\export2.txt" >> results.txt 2>>&1
del /q "%userprofile%\desktop\export3.txt" >> results.txt 2>>&1
del /q "%userprofile%\desktop\export4.txt" >> results.txt 2>>&1
del runme.bat

Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.
Another text file should appear on your Desktop called results.txt, do not open it until the black box has closed.

Once complete, please post the results.txt output and a new HijackThis log.

Hi Robert,

What you have posted for results.txt isn't what I was expecting, we'll try it a different way:

There is a file called runme2.zip attached to this post, please download it to your Desktop.
Right-click runme2.zip and choose Extract All..., follow the prompts to unzip the file runme2.bat to a new folder on your Desktop.
Double-click runme2.bat to execute it.
A file called results2.txt should automatically open in Notepad, please post this in your next response along with a new HijackThis log.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Hi Robert,

That output was as expected :)

Next press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:
reg delete "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\PROTOCOLS\Filter\text/html" /f

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and remove Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2. This is out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7) from here

You have Bittorrent, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I strongly recommend you remove Bittorrent via Add/Remove Programs.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Open the ESET Online Scanner in Internet Explorer
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use. and click Start
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed by Internet Explorer
  • Once the ActiveX has finished loading click Start to initialize and update the scanner
  • When the Computer scan screen appears, leave Remove found threats UN-checked, but check the box next to Scan unwanted applications. Then click Scan to begin the scan.
  • Once complete and the summary page appears, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    notepad "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt"
  • The log file should now appear in Notepad, copy and paste the contents in your next response.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Once complete, please post the Eset scan log and a new HijackThis log.
Also, tell me how your computer is running now.

Hi Robert,

msiebbar.dll is identified by several reputable antivirus vendors as a downloader trojan, as the name implies, the purpose of this program is to download other malware to your system - which may or may not be detected and eliminated by your antivirus program.

At this stage I don't think you have a keylogger on board, but I'm not sure what sort of problem the mouse clicking is, can you give me some more detail on the problems you are experiencing.

Please download F-Secure Blacklight to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Double click fsbl.exe to run it, choose I accept the agreement then press Scan
  • It will create the fsbl-xxxxxxx.log on your desktop containing a list of all items found.
  • Do not choose to rename any because legitimate items can also be present.
  • Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Once complete, please post the Blacklight log along with a new HijackThis log and provide whatever information you can on the symptoms you are currently experiencing.

Hi Robert,

Clean up with OTMoveIt2:
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTMoveIt2 as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTMoveIt main screen, press the CleanUp! button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

------------------------------------------------------------------------

the double clicking of icons takes at least 4 trys.
also drag and drop, and accuracy of the mouse is affected
That sounds very frustrating, and no, I have not experienced this problem before. However, if the above steps went well I think your machine is clean of malware and that this problem has other causes.

As the issue is not likely to be malware-related, I think the best and fastest solution for you is to post on a PC troubleshooting forum like the Microsoft Windows forum at WhatTheTech. The experts there specialize in handling problems like this so you are certain to get expert assistance and a speedy resolution is very likely.

Here are some tips to help you keep your machine clean:

You have a good antivirus program installed, however I recommend you install antispyware software with real-time capabilities - this means it protects you from system changes and spyware while you are working, not just removing malware after it has been installed. There are a range of paid-for and free packages available, a free one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/securit ... fault.mspx

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Find out more about how to prevent infection in the future

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
