I use Mozilla as my browser and each time I open a new tab a new window (not a new tab) appears either with an advertisement, a suggestion I buy spy-ware software to fix my slow computer, or some other pop-up. It happens with Inet Explorer as well. The web address of the pop-up usually begins with http://www.login.tracking....(name of advert).

Perhaps this is a tracking cookie problem? Additionally the computer is running very slowing, and programs frequently get jammed up in "non-responding". There have been a couple times that as I shut down the computer, I get a notice saying "there are other people logged onto this computer, do you wish to continue shut-down."

I have run Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, AWG Anti-spyware and all have come up with problems to be fixed but the problem still persists.

Below is the log file for HijackThis that I could use help analysing. Thank you.

Hello, and Image to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is Michael I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happen.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please note: All of my posts need to be checked by a teacher, so please be patient while I attempt to remove your malware.

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Please post this log on your next reply.

Thanks, Michael

Unread postby weaverb » July 21st, 2008, 2:24 am

Thank you very much for your help. I think I have resolved my problem. I just went through the HijackThis log and deleted a few things that looked suspicious (with a little extra advice from an IT person). This seems to have resolved the problem and was simpler than the additional logs you're requesting below.

Good luck with your training and thanks again for your help.

  • If your computer doesn't restart automatically, restart it manually.
  • Choose your usual session.
  • Wait for the *** Cleaning stage complete! *** message (It may take a reasonable amount of time)
  • A new document will be produced.
  • Please copy/paste the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Your desktop will now appear.
Note : In the event you lose your desktop, press CTRL+ALT+Delete and run Explorer.exe as a new task.

  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply

Here are the logs you have requested. Doing a bit or research on rootkits it seems it is often easier to do a complete reinstall of the operating system because it is so difficult to find and remove the malicious files. How confident are you that you can find all problematic files without a reinstall?

Thanks for your time and your answers.

What explanation do you give for the fact that I found a site that declares Navilog1 is actually malware itself?

Can you post the link to that site so I can see?

Navilog1 is the tool that removes the bad rootkit called Navipromo. This tool is not bad. Please post a new Hijackthis log.

Re: Log File to be Analysed from HijackThis Scan

Unread postby MikeSwim07 » July 24th, 2008, 1:13 pm

"NAVILOG1.EXE has been the subject of the following behavior(s):

* Created as a process on disk
* Deleted as a process from disk
* Executed as a Process
* Has code inserted into its Virtual Memory space by other programs
* Executed by Internet Explorer""

Malware can use those tactics but as well as legit tools which are included in navilog1

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be.
Please advise of any problems you still have. If you think you're clean please give one more reply so that I can archive this topic.

Now that you are clean, I have some tips & tricks for you to keep your computer clean and secure. The first few (like removing dangerous tools and Windows Update) have to be done, the others are optional (beginning with Spybot S &D).

It may seem like your system will be too much protected with all these things installed, but a lot of programs aren't running always on the background so don't slow down your computer. Please take a look at the following things:

    Delete Harmful tools with OTMoveIt2

    • Start OTMoveIt.exe
    • Click on CleanUp!
    • A list of tools will be downloaded from the internet
    • When a box pops up click Yes

    Also delete Navilog1.exe and C:\Program Files\navilog1
  • You may delete any logs that any of the tools produced.

  • Clear Old System Restore Points
    • Turn System Restore off
    • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Check Turn off System Restore.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
    • Turn System Restore on
    • On the Desktop, right click on the My Computer icon.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Restore tab.
    • Uncheck *Turn off System Restore*.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
Note: only do this once, and not on a regular basis

  • Set correct settings for files
    • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
    • Under Hidden files and folders if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
    • If unchecked please check Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
    • If necessary check Display content of system folders
    • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
    • Click OK

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  • Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option.
This will provide real-time spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an anti virus software. A tutorial on installing & using this product can be found here:
    Tutorail for Spybot S & D
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. You can download it here:
    SpywareBlaster
  • Install WinPatrol - As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You can download it from this website:
    WinPatrol
The developer is a well-known man in the MalWare Removal business. If you really like WinPatrol think about upgrading to the PLUS version. It will give you additional features and you will only have to pay once, for your whole malware-free life.
  • Install MVPS HOSTS - This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial here:
    WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
  • Use an alternative Internet Browser - Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead:
Firefox << Most used, I use this one myself.
    Opera
  • Bookmark general cleanup links - It could be that your computer is becoming slower and slower. This is not always the cause of malware. Most of the times it's malware when you're computer is suddenly getting slow or doing strange. When the slowdown increases slowly check (so now bookmark) these links for tips & tricks:
    Help! My computer is slow
Slow Computer? Check here first; it may not be malware
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
