FSMGMT.dll HijackThis Log

Unread postby TeamBoghos » July 5th, 2008, 6:50 pm

When McAfee ran a scan today, it told me that I had a virus it could neither clean nor move nor delete. I have tried to go in Safe Mode and delete the file but Windows keeps telling me I can not delete the file. I have Enterprise McAfee that auto updates the licenses and definition files.

> The DLL name is "FSMGMT.dll" and is stored in my C:\Windows\System32 folder.
> Does anyone know what this is?
> Does anyone know how to delete it?

I have googled the file name & some things I have read stated that it was a virus caused by a Windows crash and some say spyware. I have run Ad Aware and Spybot and neither catch/recognize it. I ran SuperAnti-Spyware and it did not clean it.

Welcome to the MWR forums. My name is peku006. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research. Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic. Please stay at one forum for help.
3. Please continue reading posts until I give the All Clear. It is important to note this, as a clean looking HijackThis is not always a sign your system is clean.

Note: I am still in training here at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

Thanks so much for helping. C:\Windows\System32\FSMGMT.dll is infected with the trojan PWS-WoW, just so you know.

I look forward to the resolution.

Hi TeamBoghos

One or more of the identified infections is a keylogger.

This allows hackers at least to steal critical system information

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can attempt to clean this machine but i can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

We would like to clean this machine. We have removed all passwords/logins from our browsers. Can this virus also steal any information from Word docs and other non internet based files?

We are eager to clean this virus and move on.

Do you know if there anything I can do to my McAfee to set it to recognize thing like this going forward?

Hi TeamBoghos

Can this virus also steal any information from Word docs and other non internet based files?

No
PWS-WoW is a Password Stealers which attempts to steal login credentials for the World of Warcraft game and sends it to the trojan author.

It is not a good idea to run more than one real-time anti-spyware shield. Using real-time protection from two or more anti-spyware applications may cause conflicts.
(there is nothing wrong in having more than one antispyware programmes for "on demand" scanning)

I see that you have Viewpoint installed. Viewpoint and all its subcategories (Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player) are installed with your AOL or AIM program. This is not installed without your consent as it was clearly stated in the Terms of Agreement before you installed AOL/AIM, but Viewpoint is still considered as foistware.

Viewpoint has developed a system of collecting clickstream data on users who have installed the Viewpoint media player, then using that data to target ads and content on the company's partner sites. Therefore creating pop up advertisements on your computer.

Please read this if you wish to know more.

I highly recommend you to remove the Viewpoint products. If you wish to do so, please read the following:

  • Click on the Start menu, Settings and go into the Control Panel (Or Start menu and go into the Control Panel for Vista Users)
  • In the Control Panel, double click on Add or Remove Programs (Or Programs and Features for Vista Users)
  • Highlight (if found):
    • Viewpoint and remove it
    • Viewpoint Manager and remove it
    • Viewpoint Media Player and remove it

If Viewpoint won't or can't uninstall, please report this and we'll figure out another way.

1 - Download and Run DSS
Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) and save to your Desktop.

DSS will do the following:

  • Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
  • Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, Internet Cache Files, and empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
  • Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for an analyst to review.
  • Automatically run HijackThis. It will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed. So if HijackThis is not installed and DSS prompts you to download it, please answer yes.
You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges when using.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
  • If your anti-virus or firewall complains, please allow this script to run as it is not malicious.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open in Notepad:
  • main.txt <- this one will be maximized
  • extra.txt <- this one will be minimized
  • If not, they both can be found in the C:\Deckard\System Scanner folder.
  • Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.
-- When running DSS, some firewalls may warn that it is trying to access the Internet especially if your asked to download the most current version of HijackThis. Please ensure that you allow it permission to do so.
-- If you get a warning from your anti-virus while DSS is scanning, please allow DSS to continue as the scan is not harmful.

2- Status Check
Please reply with

Deckard's System Scanner main.txt and extra.txt
description of any problems you are having with your PC

Thanks peku006

Hi peku006,

Will the instructions you provided below clear out/remove/clean the pws-wow trojan virus? If not, please note that we definitely want to clean our PC.

Thanks!

Hi peku006,

I ran DSS & below is the log that appeared after the scan ran.

I noticed that the file fsmgmt.dll is still on the machine. May I ask you something out of ingorance? Is that file ok and it was just that the pws-wow virus attached itself to that?

Anyway - here is the scan..thanks SO much for your help. I appreciate it a lot!!
