Malware infestation I fear, mainly a windows antivirus 2008

Unread postby lightning001 » July 4th, 2008, 12:09 pm

while recently browsing I got a popup from windows antivirus 2008 and (dummy me) clicked on it and now it is one of the most annoying things on my computer toolbar. Please keep in mind that like 95% of us in the world I am one of those that only knows the very basics of how a computer works. My browser is yahoo with a newer version of explorer. I have McAfee antivirus and firewall and recently got a safe surfing program from them. I would be very interested in other recommendations. Oh forgot to tell you I have windows xp pro with sp2, of course you guys could probably glean all of that from my logfile.

Hello lightning001,

I will be assisting you with your malware issues.

  • Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! If you have any question or you're stuck in there please reply it to me. I will try my best to help you!
  • Please bookmark or favourite this page. In case you need it as reference or etc.
----------------------------------------------
You have more than antivirus 2008 infection on your pc, cleaning it will need some time so be patient with me. :)
----------------------------------------------
Your copy of HijackThis needs to be in a folder of it's own. When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in. For this reason it cannot be run from a Zip file or from Temporary folders because the backups will be deleted. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

Download and Run HijackThis
Download HJTInstall.exe to your Desktop.

  • Doubleclick HJTInstall.exe to install it.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Close HijackThis for now.
----------------------------------------------
Remove one of your Anti Virus programs.
You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:

Yahoo! Antivirus
McAfee

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

Please remove one of them.

I believe you should remove Yahoo! Antivirus, as your McAfee version is a paid Antivirus. If your McAfee expired let me know.
----------------------------------------------
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)

Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

**If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

Hello lightning001,

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
----------------------------------------------
Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.
A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.
----------------------------------------------
Please download ATF cleaner
Make sure that all browser windows are closed.
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
----------------------------------------------
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Post that log back here.
----------------------------------------------
Post back:
C:\rapport.txt

Hello lightning001,

Looks like these 2 tools did a fine job. :)
----------------------------------------------
FIX HIJACKTHIS ENTRIES

Open up Hijackthis.
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CaAvTray] "C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Antivirus\CAVTray.exe"
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CAVRID] "C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Antivirus\CAVRID.exe"
O23 - Service: CAISafe - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Antivirus\ISafe.exe (file missing)
O23 - Service: VET Message Service (VETMSGNT) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Antivirus\VetMsg.exe (file missing)

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis.
----------------------------------------------
Delete bad services
Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following text in the quote to Notepad. Save it as "All Files" and name it FixServices.bat
Please save it on your desktop.

@echo off
sc stop CAISafe
sc stop VETMSGNT
sc delete CAISafe
sc delete VETMSGNT
exit

Double click FixServices.bat. A window will open and close. This is normal.
----------------------------------------------
Using Windows Explore by right-clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore navigate to and find the following Folder: if found, delete the following (some may not be present after previous steps):

C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Antivirus
----------------------------------------------
Run Kaspersky Online AV Scanner

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  • Save this report to a convenient place like your Desktop. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Copy and paste the report into your next reply along with a fresh HJT log and a description of how your PC is behaving.

I'm having a problem with kaspersky not recognizing the latest version of java. I just downloaded JRE 1.6.0 and Kaspersky keeps telling me to download 1.5 or later version. Is this a problem on my end or what?

Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 7.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and click on Download button.
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.

Well I went to java and went throught the download twice and even went so far as to uninstall all Java programs and download again. and still Kaspersky tells me to install jre1.5 or later version. this is starting to get rather frustrating.

Hello lightning001,

Did you use Internet Explorer for Kaspersky scan, or Firefox?
If you have both browsers please try again with the browser you didn't use the first time. If still no go, run Panda as per my instructions below.
------------------------------
PANDA ONLINE SCAN

Please go >here< to run Panda's ActiveScan
  • Once you are on the Panda site, click the Scan your PC now button
  • A new window will open...click the Scan Now button
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed. It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan. Note: This may take a couple of minutes
  • Run the ActiveX control, if requested. The screen will then show the scanning progress - the scan will take a while to finish. Please be patient.
  • When the scan has finished, click on Export To
  • Save the file as Activescan.txt to your Desktop
  • Close the Activescan window then go to your Desktop
  • Double-click on Activescan.txt and it will open in Notepad
  • In Notepad, click Edit > Select all, then Edit > Copy
  • Reply to this thread and click Ctrl+V to paste the log in your reply

I should have thought to try explorer before. sometimes I dont think my other options. it went right to it this time. computer is running better than it has in a long time. No more unwanted popups. and it FAST again. I'm checking out Mozilla Firefox which came with this computer. that will become my new browzer.

Hello lightning001,

Firefox is a very good browser, it is said that it's safer than IE.
----------------------------------------------
Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware again.

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Adobe 9 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
----------------------------------------------
Post back:
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware report.
RogueRemover results.

Hello lightning001,

It's ok, you can remove Rogue Remover, job done!
----------------------------------------------------
How many users are on this pc?

I can see this infected line appear in your new HijackThis log.
You can see a different name in this line for each user.

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-6058511-384198679-3040427960-1007\..\Run: [Antivirus] C:\Program Files\WAV\wav.exe (User 'Desiree')

The one i had you delete previously was for Tonya

O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-6058511-384198679-3040427960-1006\..\Run: [Antivirus] C:\Program Files\WAV\wav.exe (User 'Tonya')

So i want you to login the pc as Desiree run HijackThis and remove that line.
Do that for all the users of this pc and let me know it's done.
----------------------------------------------------
You didn't update Adobe Reader.

Please do that also, and post a new HijackThis log.

we have 3 users on this computer. I have 500 gigs of Hard Drive so larger files barely dent my memory, going back to adobe and it having almost 34 MB.
