Got a keylogger (WoW account hacked)

Unread postby Cerridanae » July 7th, 2008, 4:45 pm

Somewhere my husband or one of the kids managed to pick up a keylogger that resulted in my husband's World of Warcraft account being hacked and stolen. =(

I've run Ad-Aware, the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, X-Cleaner Micro, Spybot Search and Destroy, and made sure both Vista (SP1) and Java are updated. I'm still not sure I got the dang thing, and so I could use your help in determining if it's really gone, and if not, how to get rid of it for good. Here's the HiJackThis log:

Thanks in advance for your help, and I have one other question. Is this type of keylogger something that can infect other computers on the network? I'm wary of logging on my WoW account on my computer now until I know. I only use Firefox with NoScript/AdBlock Plus on my computer, he was using IE when he got infected even though I've been telling him for months I've known of lots of people get hacked with WoW keyloggers through malicious banner ads on WoW-related/gaming sites *grumble* He'll use Firefox from now on, cause I deleted his IE shortcut from the start menu and his desktop and replaced it with FF's, haha).

Hi Cerridanae

1. Download combofix from any of these links and save it to Desktop:
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
3. When finished, it shall produce a log for you (C:\ComboFix.txt). Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

Thanks so much for the help! Ok, ran ComboFix, it didn't have to end any processes while it was running, and it didn't reboot at any point, if that's important. Here's the fresh HijackThis log and the ComboFix log after.

Hi

Nothing there.

Right-click your favorite web browser and choose run as administrator.

After that:

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Hi

Empty this folder:

F:\Documents and Settings\Jeffrey Christian\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache

Empty Recycle Bin.

Looks like that some program has already deleted that keylogger.

Still problems?

Okies, emptied that folder, and ran yet another scan and nothing came up on it, so I'm gonna cross my fingers and assume one of the spyware removers/cleaners I used before I posted caught the little bastage and got rid of it.

Unfortunately we are still working with Blizzard to recover the account, so I won't know for absolute sure till he can log in again on his computer, though with your help I am very confident we got it. I ran 4-5 different (good and well recommended) spyware/virus cleaners before I even posted here, and I've forevermore banned him from using IE without my supervision (lol) as well as deleting every single shortcut to it on his computer (I can't delete IE off either our computers entirely cause we still use it for Netflix Instant Viewing, which is the one site we go to that does not work in FF) and replacing them with Firefox shortcuts, plus I installed NoScript + AdBlocker Plus. I also am now running the Spybot S&D Resident that prompts/warns of any attempts to make changes in the registry, as well as a completely current and updated AVG 8.0. Hopefully that'll prevent him from getting another keylogger, I actually sadly know more than a few people, including other guildmates that got them (and subsequently hacked) over the past few months from malicious banner ads installing keyloggers on gaming/WoW-related sites.

The slightly hilarious part is (at least it'd be funny had he not gotten his account hacked/stolen), he resisted using Firefox for months, and now that I've forced him to use it, he tells me just last night, "You know...I actually think I really like Firefox. I'm seriously starting to like it way better than IE. It's actually really cool!". *sigh* Only took him getting his WoW account hacked to finally get him to switch for good, lol. Well, that and me telling him if he persists on using IE and gets hacked again he's on his own, cause if I have to take care of it again, I'm just wiping his drives clean altogether, and he can start from scratch, haha.

Thanks again so much for your help, it is truly, truly appreciated, by both myself and my husband. *grateful bow and smile*

Hi

OK so sounds like a happy ending :)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition - Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it saysThe Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications..
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
    Accept License Agreement. Click continue.
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK

Next we remove all used tools.

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop.
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

  • Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows Vista then you should disable and re-enable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point.

You can find instructions on how to enable and re-enable system restore here:

    Windows Vista System Restore Guide

Re-enable system restore with instructions from tutorial above

  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
  • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
  • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
  • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
  • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
  • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
  • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
  • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
  • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

  • Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

  • Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  • Install Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
