Vista AntiVirus 2008 infection

Unread postby andrewtnyc » July 7th, 2008, 5:27 pm

I got infected with Vista AntiVirus 2008 last night. As a result, I can no longer run Firefox (or Opera). IE works but I can't access many web sites that might be helpful for my problem (or even support.microsoft.com). Fortunately, I'm able to access the Internet on my laptop computer so I've been able to research some solutions but I can't get many things to work on the desktop computer.

I was able to remove C:\Program Files\vav and all references to VAV in my registry but the Icon still exists in the Control Panel and it is still causing a lot of problems. Many of the programs that I try to run, won't run, such as Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.19. I was able to run SmitFraudFix v2.329 in Safe Mode, but it didn't seem to do much. Here is my rapport.txt file:

Hello, and Image to the Malware Removal forums.
My name is Michael I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.

HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need
your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happen.

Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:
  • I will working be on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please note: All of my posts need to be checked by a teacher, so please be patient while I attempt to remove your malware.

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Please post this log on your next reply.

Thanks, Michael

Thank you for your reply, Michael.

As it happened, I was able to run AVG Anti-Spyware last night and that cleaned up a lot of the problems I was having. I also ran Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware which found some errors to fix. A friend suggested RootkitReveal.exe from SystemInternals.exe and that didn't find any errors of significance. I feel I'm running okay again now.

Nevertheless, I have followed your instructions and will put my Uninstall Log that was just done this afternoon (7/8) below. Plus, I have done a new HijackThis Log file and will put that in this message. Perhaps you'll be able to compare the two HijackThis Logs and see if things were cleared between the two. I know the computer seems to be running smoothly now but I don't have any evidence as to whether everything was cleared away that needs to. (Fortunately, the Vista Anti-Virus Icon did disappear from the Control Panel, which was a great relief.)

Thank you for your help!

Re: Vista AntiVirus 2008 infection

Unread postby MikeSwim07 » July 10th, 2008, 9:08 am

Remove one of your Anti Virus programs.
You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:
AVG
McAfee

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

Please remove one of them.

Update Java Runtime:

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 6.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and click on Download button.
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Online Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Reboot your computer
  • Delete the folder C:\Program Files\Java if present
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Download and Run DSS
Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<- this one will be minimized.
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and the extra.txt in your reply.

Please post both DSS logs in your next reply.
