Desktop and taskbar missing

Unread postby kalega » July 5th, 2008, 7:52 pm

System running XP. Upon startup Windows Defender indicated problem and I had it remove trojan viruses. Then desktop icons and taskbar missing. Task manager was also unavailable. I got the task manager back through a regedit deletion recommended on a troubleshooting site. Desktop is available in safe mode. Ran adaware and avast antivirus in safe mode and removed more malware and trojan virus. Also ran trend mociro online scan and removed what it found. Still no desktop and taskbar. Cannot right click and get desktop properties.Last scan of ad aware found no problem.

  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.

If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.

Make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

Image

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.
____________

We need to disable windows defender.
A good program but may interfere with our fixes.

Open Windows Defender
Click Tools
Click General Settings
Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button
Close Windows Defender

Please disable the Ad-Aware 2007 Service as it may interfere with the fix.
  • On your desktop, click Start.
  • Choose Run.
  • Type services.msc in the open box and click OK or press Enter.
  • Scroll down the list of services and double-click Ad-Aware 2007 Service.
  • In the service properties window that opens, click the STOP button.
  • Under Startup Type, use the pull down menu and select Manual from the list of options.
  • Click OK and exit the Services Control Manager.
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Once your log is clean you can re-enable those settings.

_____________

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present)

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... .yahoo.com
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/customi ... ch/ie.html

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit

__________

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt

Dan:

Thank you.

I was able to get back the desktop by running windows update, but things are still slow and squirrely. In fact Avast just told me I had an infection.

Here is the Hijack Uninstall Manager List. I will now disable Windows defender and Adaware 2007 service and do as you recommend. I will next be posting with the ComboFix.txt and new Hijack This log.

Turn Avast back on, leave others till we have done the fix.
When we run the combo script once I have gone through the log, you will need to disable avast again to run the script!

Submit a File For Analysis
We need to have the files below Scanned by Uploading them/it to Jotti

Please visit Jotti
Copy/paste the the following file path into the window
C:\WINDOWS\hh.exe
Click Submit/Send File
Please post back, to let me know the results.

If Jotti is too busy please try Virustotal

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Code: Select all
Folder::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmp
C:\WINDOWS\system32\modtrux01
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ec3
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dsir
C:\WINDOWS\system32\cf10
C:\WINDOWS\system32\am
C:\temp\syschk3

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt"

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Copy and paste the command in codebox into command prompt and post me the report

Code: Select all
dir /a /s C:\6ca12eb747bb3fca70ea0b361f >> log.txt
notepad log.txt
del log.txt
