Welcome to the MWR forums. My name is Bio-Hazard. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research. Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues this may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know or understand something please don't hesitate to say or ask
  • It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Note: I am still in training here at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

You should be aware that there are signs of a commercial keylogging programme on your computer

Because it is impossible for us to establish ownership of the computer whose log you have posted we are also unable to establish whether the programme was installed with the owners permission. There may be legal ramifications with its removal which we are not equipped or trained to deal with. Because of this we are unable to give directions to remove it from the computer.

  • If this is a Company machine and you feel the programme was not installed by your company notify your company's IT department or those responsible for computer security.
  • If this is a private machine you may wish to take legal advice. Removal also may need to be done by a suitably qualified professional.

this is a private machine it is owned by me and my wife, the commercial keylogger you can see has come from the spypal software that was installed by my wife so we can keep a check on our sons activities, what she was unaware of before she installed it was the fact that this softare contains such key logging attributes. i have tried to remove what i think is the suspect with hjt but is will not remove it.. where do we go from here?

Sorry about the delay. Due the fact of our forum policy i can not help you remove the Commercial keylogger program. Reasons are in my last speech. However we still continue with rest of the cleaning process.

Please note: Due to the restrictions on Vista, all tools should be started by Right-Click ---> Run As Administrator

I'd like you to check (a file/some files) for Viruses.
C:\Windows\system32\reghostm.exe

  • Copy/Paste the first file on the list into the white Upload a file box.
  • Click Send/Submit, and the file will upload to VirusTotal/Jotti, where it will be scanned by several anti-virus programmes.
  • After a while, a window will open, with details of what the scans found.
  • Note details of any viruses found.
  • Repeat for all files on the list, and post me the details please

Uninstall list

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis. To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Spybot S&D Teatimer

From your log i can see this that you are running a Spybot S&D Teatimer. This might interfere with fixes we are about to do so we need to disable it.

Disable Spybot's TeaTimer. This is a two step process.
First step:
  • Right-click the Spybot Icon in the System Tray (looks like a blue/white calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • If you have the new version 1.5, Click once on Resident Protection, then Right click the Spybot icon again and make sure Resident Protection is now Unchecked. The Spybot icon in the System tray should now be now colorless.
  • If you have Version 1.4, Click on Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second step, For Either Version :
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, choose Advanced Mode
  • Go To the bottom of the Vertical Panel on the Left, Click Tools
  • then, also in left panel, click Resident shows a red/white shield.
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • In the Resident protection status frame, Uncheck the box labeled Resident
    Tea-Timer
(Protection of over-all system settings) active
  • OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.

Remove HijackThis entries

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)

  • Close all open windows and browsers/email etc...
  • Click on the Fix Checked button
  • When completed close the application.

DSS

  • Please download Deckard's System Scanner from HERE and save it to your desktop.

Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.
  • Save all your work and close all opened programs.
  • Double click on dss.exe to run it. Follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two log files will be produced. The first one, main.txt, will be maximized, the second one, extra.txt, will be minimized.
  • Please post the contents of the 2 log files in your next reply.

Logs/Information to Post in Next Reply

Please post the following logs/Information in your reply:
  • Virustotal or Jotti Results
  • DSS Logs main.txt, will be maximized, the second one, extra.txt, will be minimized.
  • HijackThis Uninstall List
  • A fresh HijackThis Log ( after all the above has been done)

Hi sorry for the delay i am working away at the moment and cant get to that PC untill friday, however i have had a look at your instructions and am a little confused.
Can i just reiterate

1. copy and paste this ...C:\Windows\system32\reghostm.exe in the "Quote" box into the VirusTotal link and upload it. I can do this but i am not sure what list and which files you want me to repeat with.

the rest of the instructions i think i will be able to manage when i arrivve home on Friday.

Can i also ask a question? Is my partner ok to use her bank details on that PC with it having key loggers on it ?

regards John

Sorry about that. It was my mistake just submit that one file. This one C:\Windows\system32\reghostm.exe

It is ok to use, because you have installed this sofware on your computer yourself. It is not sending the information anywhere. Information that commercial keylogger saves is only you to see. You have the control of the program.

Please note: Due to the restrictions on Vista, all tools should be started by Right-Click ---> Run As Administrator

You have cracked version of NOD32 on your computer. You need to remove NOD32 FiX v2 before we can continue with any further. Please remove this from your system. Here is our forums Malware Removal Forum Guidelines and Rules. Here is quote from it:

Any time the helper detects that you may have illegal software on your machine, that helper may stop assisting you immediately until you can demonstrate that you have rectified the situation. We will not support fixing machines with pirated or otherwise illegal software.

If NOD32 stops working after that you have remove that or buy it. I will also give a list of free Antivirus progrmas.

Remove Programs

  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to programs and features
  • Find and Right click on each instance of (if present):

    NOD32 FiX v2
    NOD32

  • Click Uninstall & then follow the prompts to remove it

NOTE: Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Antivirus

Anti-virus software are programs that detect cleans and erase harmful virus files on a computer
Web server or network.
Unchecked virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present and will clean delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Here are 2 free choices:

  • Avira AntiVir Personal- Free anti-virus software for Windows. Detects and removes more than 50000 viruses. Free support.
  • avast! 4 Home Edition - Anti-virus program for Windows. The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.
