I brought a antivirus (Shield Deluxe) to clean my computer. Unknown to me this program is not going to help me with my problem. When I asked them is there a program to help me clean my computer, they told me no. They did tell me to try to clean my hidden files, empty internet, scan computer in safe mode and clear and restore points. After trying all of this I still have the same problem. At this they told me they could not help me. I do not have a problem with my antivirus company, (I understand that they must not be experts in this area).I just need help in cleaning my computer. I am willing to take the time to go through necessary steps, even if it is time consuming. I am a college student, please help!

I must tell you that I already see a big diffenence in my PC. After cleaning it with these programs my PC is running fast and I am currently not having the "Win Spyware Alert" pop-up. I know that this does not mean that my PC is rid of all infection but it is helping. I was just wondering what is the reason for having to run the three different programs. Do they clean different types of virus or do all of them together help to insure that you find the virus. Just wondering.

smadams9602,
You're doing very well here.
The Malwarebytes Ant-Malware app specifically targets spyware. Most Anti-Virus programs target different infection types.
Although you should never run two Anti-Virus programs at once, this combination of one AV, one Anti-Spyware will coexist nicely.
You may wish to run the update and scan with the Anti-Malware program every week or so, and even pay for the lifetime subscription. It's worth it.
You will not need additional Spyware/Virus scanner programs. Don't install any. Too many fakes and incompetent ones out there.
--------------------------------------------------------
You should download and install the newest version of the free Adobe Reader for reading pdf files, due to vulnerabilities in earlier versions of reader and acrobat.
All versions numbered lower than 8.1.2 are vulnerable.
See here about the threat : http://www.adobe.com/support/security/b ... 07-01.html
  • Please uninstall all versions of Adobe Reader before installing the latest version.
  • Go to Start, Control Panel or Start, Settings, Control paneland double click on Add/Remove Programs.
  • Locate every instance of Adobe Reader, one at a time, and click on Change/Remove to Uninstall each one.
You are showing Adobe Reader 7, which should be removed.
  • Click here to download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.
  • Select your Windows version and click on Download. Save this file to your desktop and run it to install the latest version of Adobe Reader.
  • Then go here to install the latest update patch : http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/%20...%20ftpID=3967
If you prefer a simple reader, without plug-ins, that is smaller and faster, take a look at the free Foxit Reader here instead: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php
------------------------------------------------------------
Update your Java.
Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older versions of Java components.
  • Close any programs you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  • Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment, JRE, J2SE, or Java Webstart in the name.
(You appear to have J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0. be sure to include it.)
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all installed versions of Java.
  • Reboot your computer
------------------------------------------------------------
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment(JRE), and install it to your computer. It is the 5th one down on the page, called Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6
Download it, choose save, and save it to your desktop. Then doubleclick it, and it will install the newest version of Java for you to use.
-----------------------------------------------------------
I will tell you up front I am uncertain about American Greetings in the program below, but most e-card sites are infectious.
It's your choice whether to include it. Don't ever use Blue Mountain, and don't click on e-cards that anyone sends you, ever.
Remove Programs Using Control Panel
From Start, Settings, Control Panel or Start, Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs.
Highlight each Entry, as follows, one by one, if it exists, and choose Remove :

AWS
Weatherbug
Zumie Search 1.0 build 136
American Greetings® Art & More Store

Take extra care in answering questions posed by any Uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into Keeping the program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Run a cleaning cycle once more with ATF-Cleaner
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis.
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Let me know if everything proceeds OK. I will review the log and give you a final set of instructions.

Re: thought I had a virus. Now I know it is a spyware.

Unread postby smadams9602 » June 29th, 2008, 3:38 pm

For the most part everything seemed to go well except for one thing. When i tried to remove "Zumie 1.0 build", I got a pop up message saying, File contains Trojan Program "Trojan dropper.Win 32 Agent.rav' and cannot be disinfected. When I clicked on the delete button. A message pop up saying, Shield Deluxe C:/...? Locals~1/Temp?uniaF.tmp/uninstall.exe. deleted. It does not appear that it is removing the Zumie 1.0 build.

Also I had a question about my printer. When I started having problems with my PC my printer stop being able to read the message to print. So when I when click the print button I would see the printer icon appear but it would never print. When i would check the status of the print job it always says paused. I have tried restarting my PC, makeing sure it is my default printer, unpluging and repluging everything but this is still not helping. I know that my PC is reading the right printer beacuse when I restart my printer it gives me the status on my printer and when I open the cover it tells me the cover is open. I have not tried to print since I have cleaned my PC (I just wanted to take care of one thing at a time). My main question is, can this problem be due to the infection that was on my PC or it is a problem of it's own.

The last question I have is, I know that you are not here to promote products but I wanted to know if the shield deluxe 2008 antivirus is recommened by you and others in the expertise field of computers. I know now that it does not protect me from spyware, rouge, trojan, other all other infetions like these but is good against other viruses.

smadams9602,
Print this out, since you will not have Internet for part of this fix.
You can use print Preview to get the right page(s) to print in this thread.
PC Security Shield is undependable and its website does promote adware on its own.
I can't say whether it's effective against viruses because no expert I know uses it or recommends it. Let's remove and replace it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download just one of these free anti-virus installers and save to your desktop.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disconnect the PC cable from the internet.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis (or reveal.exe).
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Antivirus2008y] C:\Program Files\Antivirus2008y\antvrs.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AVP] "C:\Program Files\PCSecurityShield\The Shield Deluxe 2008\avp.exe"
O23 - Service: The Shield Deluxe 2008 (AVP) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\PCSecurityShield\The Shield Deluxe 2008\avp.exe" -r (file missing)

Make sure Every other window except HJT is closed (No other tabs showing in the bottom tray), and Click Fix Checked
Click the "X" in the upper right corner of the HiJackThis window to close it.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Double click on the AntiVirus Installer you saved to your desktop in the first step, and install the program.
-----------------------------------------------------------
ReConnect the cable to the internet.
-----------------------------------------------------------
REBOOT THE MACHINE
-----------------------------------------------------------
Update your new AntiVirus Program, and run a full scan. Let it remove anything it wants.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Folder Deletion
In Windows Explorer (My Computer), navigate to the folder shown below, highlighted in red, if found, and press Delete.
C:\Program Files\PCSecurityShield\ <== this folder only
You may have to first open the folder, choose View, Details, and delete all the underlying files and folders before an entire folder can be deleted.
If you need to delete underlying files in a folder and are unable to do so:
Right click the file set for deletion, and check Properties to see if it's read-only. Uncheck the read-only box, click Apply and OK. Then retry Delete.
If a message pops up saying "File in use", or something like that,, note the name of the file, hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and look under the Processes tab. If the exact filename is in there, highlight it and click End Process, then retry Delete.
Please Note the name and location of any item you cannot delete, or any file not found.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Hi it's sma again!

I had problems deleting the PC Security Shield folder. I tired to do all of the steps that you said to do. When I got into the Process tab there was no program with theat file name. There where two subfolders under The PC Security folder. I tried to delete the subfolders also and they would not delete as well. Other than that all the scans seemed to go well and I was able to put the new antivirius on my PC.

I had a question about my printer from the last reply that i think you may have not understood. I am having problems with my printer printing. As stated before I have tried to make sure that it is set as my default printer, unplug and plung everything back in and for some reason my print job does not go through. I know that the PC is reading the printer because when I open the the cover it tells me cover is open. When i put a print job through it never prints out and when I look at the status on the printer it says "printer paused". I know that you specialize in viruses but I was wondering if my printer problem could be related to my infection on my printer or if it is a problem of its own. If you know how to help me with this problem could you give me some suggestions.

sma,
Usually when something like that happens to a printer, it can be taken care of by re-installing the driver file. It doesn't have anything to do with malware. We will attend to that later.

Let's get rid of that other Antivirus. (If it were reputable, the Uninstall would have been easy, but it's not even listed in installed programs. That tells you something).

Open Notepad, copy and paste the following code box contents into the text:
Code: Select all
sc stop AVP
sc config AVP start= disabled
sc delete AVP

Use Notepad's File, Save As to save it to your desktop as File type All Files (not as text file or it won't work), and file name FixSvc.bat
Exit Notepad and double click on FixSvc.bat
A Command window will flash on and off.

REBOOT your machine. Sign in to your usual account.

Using HiJackThis, run a scan only, and put a check on the following O23 line. Then click Fix Checked.
O23 - Service: The Shield Deluxe 2008 (AVP) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\PCSecurityShield\The Shield Deluxe 2008\avp.exe" -r (file missing)

Using Windows Explorer, locate and DELETE the following folder (if it still is present):
C:\Program Files\PCSecurityShield\ <== this folder only

Let me know how it goes, and if you are able to remove the folder. (We have bigger hammers if required).
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HiJackThis Log
Reboot your computer one more time. Start HijackThis
Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply.

Once again i tried to delete the PC Security Shield- folder, and was unable to delete it. I also tried to delete the subfolders under PC Security Shield and could not delete those folders as well. It is still telling me that it is running. I still attempted to delete them by going to Ctrl,Alt,Delete, like before the program was not found on there.

Here are the results from the HiJack this Log.

smadams9602,
Stop Processes Prior to Deletion
Close ALL open windows. Use Ctrl-Alt-Delete together to bring up the task manager.
Under the processes tab, if it is visible, check the box 'Show processes from all users'.
Highlight this process and "End Process":

issch.exe

Then try to delete the folder:
C:\Program Files\PCSecurityShield\

The BIG hammer comes out next. Let me know.
This AntiVirus is NO GOOD

askey127,

I guess it is time to bring the big hammer out now. I was able to End the process of issch.exe and highlight "show process from all users". I still was unable to delete the PCSecurity Shield folder as well as the subfolders.

I'll wait to hear what I have to do with the BIG HAMMER!

smadams9602,
We will try this with the two pound hammer. We have more if required.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis (or reveal.exe).
Click Do System Scan Only. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)

------------------------------------------------------------
Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
Save it to your desktop
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    Code: Select all
    [kill explorer]
    C:\Program Files\PCSecurityShield\*.exe /s
    C:\Program Files\PCSecurityShield\The Shield Deluxe 2008
    C:\Program Files\PCSecurityShield
    [start explorer]

  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.
