Hello spydertl182,

I can see some signs of McAfee but it looks like it expired and you uninstalled it, obviously something still there.

Download the removal tool from HERE
  • Click Save and save the file to any folder on your computer.
  • Navigate to the folder where the file is saved.
  • Make sure all McAfee windows are closed.
  • Double-click MCPR.EXE to run the removal tool.
  • Restart your computer after receiving the message CleanUp Successful.
----------------------------------------------
You aren't running Anti Virus Software

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network.
Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently.  Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software (for personal use), from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
-Free anti-virus software for Windows.
-Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition
-Anti-virus program for Windows.
-The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
----------------------------------------------
Upload a File to Jotti
Please visit http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Copy/paste this file and path into the white box at the top:
C:\Program Files\rhcrl9j0ejcg\rhcrl9j0ejcg.exe

Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
Please wait for all the scanners to finish then copy and paste the results in your next response.

Do the same for this file too:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pphcvl9j0ejcg.exe
----------------------------------------------
Post back:
Jotti results.
A new HijackThis log.

OK, thanks for getting back with me. I have done what you said. I downloaded the removal tool, ran it, and restarted my computer. I then downloaded Antivir PersonalEditionClassic and ran the scan on the files on Jotti. The first file scanned and the results are below. I didn't know if the Statistics at the bottom of the Jotti page needed to be included as they are different put I am including them anyway, the second file (C:\WINDOWS\system32\pphcvl9j0ejcg.exe) gave me this message when I tried to submit it:
"The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file"

Re: Need help removing Antiviurs XP 2008

Unread postby chryssi2001 » July 1st, 2008, 1:15 am

Hello spyderl182,

Those infected files do not show anymore. Did you run Antivir?

Ok lets see if they are hiding from us.

This is a long fix, if any questions before moving on, please ask.
----------------------------------------------
P2P PROGRAMS

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

LimeWire 4.16.6

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Also available here.

Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

My recommendation is you go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

If you choose not to remove them, please do not use them until this computer is clean.
----------------------------------------------
VIEWPOINT-OPTIONAL

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player's components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager -- the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.
To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. Yes, I did run Antivir and it removed several infected files. I went ahead and removed Limewire and Viewpoint. I didn't know I had any Norton files left on the computer, but ran the removal tool, so hopefully they will be gone.

The computer is doing much better now, there are no more pop ups related to Antivirus XP 2008. It seems to be working the same as it was before Antivirus XP. Start-up was extremely slow but I think it was due to AOL and not something with the computer.

Thanks again for all of your help!

Re: Need help removing Antiviurs XP 2008

Unread postby chryssi2001 » July 2nd, 2008, 7:10 am

Hello spydertl182,

Yes, I did run Antivir and it removed several infected files.

I thought so. It did a good work. :)
I went ahead and removed Limewire and Viewpoint. I didn't know I had any Norton files left on the computer, but ran the removal tool, so hopefully they will be gone.

Good decision to remove Limewire! Most of the users we see infected, use P2P programs.
Norton is gone.:)
The computer is doing much better now, there are no more pop ups related to Antivirus XP 2008. It seems to be working the same as it was before Antivirus XP. Start-up was extremely slow but I think it was due to AOL and not something with the computer.

Glad to hear it.

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 8.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Adobe 8 is a large program and if you prefer a smaller program you can get Foxit 2.0 instead from http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan and then put the kettle on!
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....

Hello spydertl182,

Your last reports looks great. :)
----------------------------------------------
Set correct settings for files that should be hidden in Windows XP
  • Click Start > My Computer > Tools menu (at top of page) > Folder Options > View tab.
  • Under "Hidden files and folders" if necessary select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • If unchecked please checkHide protected operating system files (Recommended)
  • If necessary check "Display content of system folders"
  • If necessary Uncheck Hide file extensions for known file types.
  • Click OK
----------------------------------------------
Congratulations you are clean!
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Disable and Enable System Restore-WINDOWS XP
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:

Turn off System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • Check Turn off System Restore.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot.
Turn ON System Restore
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Restore tab.
  • UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5.2
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here

Install SpyWare Blaster 4.0
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.
http://www.update.microsoft.com
Note 1: If you are running Windows XP SP2, you should upgrade to SP3.
Note 2: Users of Norton Internet Security 2008 should uninstall the software before they install Service Pack 3.
The security suite can then be reinstalled afterwards.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Happy safe surfing!
