Re: infected by popups - Help

Unread postby silver » June 14th, 2008, 3:49 am

Hi Matt,

Please open this page in your browser:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit- ... channel=32

Fill in the link to topic field with a link to this topic
Copy/paste the following into the Browse to the file you want to submit field:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\winupdate.exe
Then press Send File, this will upload the file for analysis

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop (right-click the link, select Save Target As..., select your Desktop and press Save)
  • Close all applications and windows.
  • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
  • When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt<-this one will be minimized
  • Make sure Format->Word Wrap is unchecked
  • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your reply

Once complete, please post both DSS logs, you won't need to produce a new HijackThis log as DSS produces one for you.

Unread postby Matt » June 14th, 2008, 8:05 am

Thanks for getting in touch Teacher,
I uploaded the file for analysis
Then when I double clicked on dss.exe it only created a main text box, no extra text. I've copied the main text below. Hope this is OK

Cheers

Matt

Re: infected by popups - Help

Unread postby silver » June 15th, 2008, 12:10 am

Hi Matt,

I'd like to see the Extra report before proceeding, you should find the original extra.txt located in this folder or a subfolder under it named with the date and time of the scan:
C:\Deckard\System Scanner

If you can't find it for any reason, you can make another one as follows:
  • Make sure DSS.exe is on your Desktop
  • Press the Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
  • A configuration box will appear, make sure all the boxes under Main Log are un-checked and all the boxes in the Extra log section are checked then press Scan!

Also, for some reason the file upload wasn't successful, please try this:
Press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command (it's one long command) into the box and press OK:
cmd /c copy "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\winupdate.exe" "%userprofile%\desktop\winupdate.vir"

Hopefully a file called winupdate.vir should appear on your Desktop, please upload it by opening the upload page as previously:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit- ... channel=32

Fill in the link to topic field with a link to this topic
Press the Browse button, browse to and select the winupdate.vir file on your Desktop. Then press Send File.

Once complete, please post the DSS Extra report, if you have any difficulties please let me know.

I have to work away until Friday 20th June so will be unable to continue with any more work till then, so would appreciate your continued patience until Friday

Have a good week

Re: infected by popups - Help

Unread postby silver » June 15th, 2008, 9:48 pm

Hi Matt,

No problem about the delay, please continue with these instructions when you are ready:

Please open Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs, and remove the following:
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
Java(TM) SE Development Kit 6 Update 3
These are out of date and now a security risk, you can get the latest update (Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6) from here

You have Viewpoint Media Player installed on your system. This program is not malware but it is foistware in that it is usually installed without the user's knowledge or approval, and for this reason I recommend you remove it. If you actually use this program, I recommend you try using safe and free alternatives such as VLC Media Player.
Viewpoint Media Player can be removed via Add/Remove Programs

You have LimeWire, a P2P file sharing program installed on your computer. This program does not come bundled with malware as some similar programs do, but peer-to-peer file sharing networks are one of the biggest sources of malware we see. Anything downloaded from them cannot be trusted to be clean, because even if the file appears to be what it claims to be, it can have malware embedded in it.
I recommend you remove it, but of course the choice is yours.
I strongly recommend you remove Limewire via Add/Remove Programs.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please upload a file for scanning:
Open http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Copy/paste this file and path into the white box at the top:
C:\WINDOWS\HB_Tease_SS_PC.scr

Press Submit - this will submit the file for testing.
Please wait for all the scanners to finish then copy and paste the results in your next response.
Then, repeat for this file:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\robots_ss.scr

Note: If Jotti is busy, you can use VirusTotal instead.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now open HijackThis, select Open the Misc Tools section
Press the Open Uninstall Manager... button
Scroll down the list and find this entry:
Adzgalore Games Collection
Click it to highlight it, then press Delete this entry
Repeat for these entries:
Browser Optimizer Adzgalore
Enhancement Browser Tools Cpmsky
Fukk
MySidesearch Search Assistant Adzgalore

Then press Back, Scan and place a checkmark next to the following lines:

Re: infected by popups - Help

Unread postby silver » June 21st, 2008, 10:41 pm

Hi Matt,

The reports look good, how is your machine running now?

Please do a further scan as follows:

Open the ESET Online Scanner in Internet Explorer
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use. and click Start
  • Allow the ActiveX control to be installed by Internet Explorer
  • Once the ActiveX has finished loading click Start to initialize and update the scanner
  • When the Computer scan screen appears, leave Remove found threats UN-checked, but check the box next to Scan unwanted applications. Then click Scan to begin the scan.
  • Once complete and the summary page appears, press Start->Run, copy/paste the following command into the box and press OK:
    notepad "C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt"
  • The log file should now appear in Notepad, copy and paste the contents in your next response.

Once complete, please post the Eset report along with a new HijackThis log and let me know how your computer is running now.

Re: infected by popups - Help

Unread postby silver » June 22nd, 2008, 8:03 am

Hi Matt,

I'm glad to hear things are running better, just a little tidying up to do:

Clean with OTMoveIt again:
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to start the program.
  • Copy the lines in the OTMoveIt file list below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):
    OTMoveIt File List:
    Code: Select all
    C:\Program Files\gsoft
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Amateur_gb-uninstall.exe
    C:\Documents and Settings\Emma\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0
    C:\Documents and Settings\Matthew\Application Data\Sun\Java\Deployment\cache\6.0
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the "Paste List of Files/Folders to Move" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Then click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of it and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • If OTMoveIt asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report will appear in Notepad after the reboot.
  • Close OTMoveIt2

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Once complete, please post the OTMoveIt report and a new HijackThis log.

Re: infected by popups - Help

Unread postby silver » June 27th, 2008, 9:50 pm

Hi Matt,

You're most welcome and the report looks good :)

Clean up with OTMoveIt2:
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTMoveIt2 as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTMoveIt main screen, press the CleanUp! button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

If that last step went well I think your machine is now clean of malware :) here are some tips to help you keep it that way:

You have a good antivirus program installed, however I recommend you install antispyware software with real-time capabilities - this means it protects you from system changes and spyware while you are working, not just removing malware after it has been installed. There are a range of paid-for and free packages available, a free one I can recommend is Windows Defender, available here:
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/securit ... fault.mspx

I recommend you install a custom hosts file such as MVPS HOSTS. This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial by WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.
Also: subscribe to the mailing list to get update notifications.

Please take care when downloading programs. One of the easiest ways to be infected is to download freeware/shareware programs which come laden with malware - this includes allowing websites to install browser plug-ins or ActiveX controls. Before downloading, it is crucial to check whether the source is reputable.
One way to check is to use McAfee SiteAdvisor. Copy the domain name into the space provided and SiteAdvisor will give you a report on the website which can help you decide if it is safe. They also have a toolbar for IE and Firefox which adds this functionality to your browser.

Download and install the free version of WinPatrol. This program protects your computer in a variety of ways and will work well with your existing security software. Have a look at this tutorial to help you get started with the program.

Please post back to let me know that you have read this, and if there are any further issues.
