Hi John1211

This is my normal post for when you are clear - which you now are - or seem to be. Please advise of any problems you still have :-

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

I need you to turn off your restore points by following the below instructions:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Then restart your computer

Then you need to turn Restore Points back on:

Enable restore points

Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Un-Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply
ClickOK.

This will make sure there are no infected restore points, so if you need to use them you want get an nasties infection again.

Next I need you to empty your Temp Files, to do this follow the instructions below:

To Clean out your Temp Files

Follow the instrucions as above upto the C:\ command

Double-click the Windows folder

Scroll down until you find the Temp folder

Double-click on Temp folder

Highlight all the files

Right mouse click

Select Delete

It will ask are you sure, select Yes

Do Not Delete the Temp Folder

The next thing you'll need to do is empty your Recycle Bin.

If not sure how to follow the below instructions:

Right-mouse Click on Icon

Scroll down to Empty Recycle Bin, select it

It will ask if you are sure, select Yes

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:

From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.

Click once on the Security tab

Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.

Click once on the Custom Level button.

Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt

Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable

Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable

Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt

Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt

Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt

When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.

If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

Download Adaware

Adaware is a free program. It scans for known spyware on your computer. These scans should be run at least once every two weeks. For more information, see this

The program is available for download here

Download Spybot

Spybot is a scanner like adaware. It scans for spyware and other malicious programs. It is important to have both Adaware and Spybot on your computer because each program provides unique detection and pretection measures. Spybot has preventitive tools that stop programs from even installing on your computer.
To see how to set this up as well as more spybot features, see here

Spybot can be downloaded from here

Download SpywareBlaster

Spyware blaster is a program that stops known malicious activex controls from installing on your computer. It works by changing settings in your registry. It makes "kill bits" in the registry, so that certain activex controls can't install.
If you don't know what activex controls are, see here

You can download SpywareBlaster here

Download iespyad

It puts many bad webpages on your restricted zones list. This means that you can still view the "bad" webpages, but the webpages cannot do certain things (such as use javascripts and cookies).
If you need help understanding how it works, there is a tutorial here

Download it from here

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. For an article on Firewalls and a listing of some available ones see the link below

Software Firewalls

Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future. See this link for a listing of some on line & their stand-alone anti virus programs:

Antivirus Software

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit Windows Update Site regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

I hope this helps you in the near future.

Any other problems do not hesitate to return to the forum.

All the best

Can't get rid of Winfix & WinAntiSpyware

Hi Middle of Nowhere,
I wanted to ask you one more question before the topic was closed.

What's the best way to identify and disable some of the programs that auto-load when I start the PC? I'm sure some of them aren't necessary. Is the MSCONFIG utility the best way?

Please let me know what you recommend.

I also wanted to thank you for all of your hard work and patience. I really appreciate your efforts and wish you all the best!

Hi

Thanks for your knid words.

The answer your question:

Reducing your startup programs , i would suggest you look at the options in the programs you wish to stop loading at startup. There is usually a setting in them which asks whether you want them to start at windows startup or not. If there is'nt that option, yes you could use msconfig, but you have to be careful what you disable there as you could stop something which is required by Windows.

All the best to you and your family.

Happy computing

One other option on startup entries - Use spybot.

It in its advanced mode has the startups, with a simple check box for each, use that and reboot.

Just pick one or two items at a time that you KNOW you will not wish to have running.

Check the startup list at castlecops ( http://www.castlecops.com ) to help you work out which ones can go or not.
