Hi csegot, Welcome to the forums!Image

My name is Ken, on these forums I am known as ktreffin. I will be helping you with your current problem. Please note that I am still in training at Malware Removal University, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

HiJackThis logs do take some time to review and research. I would appreciate it if while you are waiting, you could please do the following for me:

Please make an Uninstall List using HiJackThis.

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
    5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

As we work together to resolve your problem, please read these instructions carefully. You may wish to print them off or copy them to Notepad.

Lastly, please keep these points in mind:
  • If you have questions, please DON'T hesitate to ask!
  • The instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
  • Please post your replies only to this topic, and please DO NOT start a new thread.
  • Since there may be multiple issues with your system, please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean!"

I am reviewing your log now, and will be back with you shortly. Thank you for your patience.

Ken

Re: hijackthis log on wife's computer

Unread postby ktreffin » June 23rd, 2008, 7:10 am

Hi csegot,

Before we begin, we need to take care of a couple things.

Step #1: Disable one of your Anti Virus programs.

You are operating your computer with multiple Anti Virus programs running in memory at once:
Avira AntiVir Personal Free Antivirus
Symantec AntiVirus

Anti-virus programs take up an enormous amount of your computer's resources when they are actively scanning your computer. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time can cause your computer to run very slow, become unstable and even, in rare cases, crash.

If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

Please disable one or the other so they do not conflict.

*==============================================*

In your log I see a few entries that I need to aks you about. Are you familiar with panasas.com?

Hijack This entries:
O1 - Hosts: HP001CC45131D0 HP001CC45131D0
O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: SearchList = panasas.com,int.panasas.com,ca.panasas.com,calab.panasas.com,pa.panasas.com,palab.panasas.com,tx.panasas.com,txlab.panasas.com
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: SearchList = panasas.com,int.panasas.com,ca.panasas.com,calab.panasas.com,pa.panasas.com,palab.panasas.com,tx.panasas.com,txlab.panasas.com

All of the above entries seem relate to that (panasas.com) and I would like to make sure that you are familiar with this.

Also your hijack this log shows signs of the MySearch toolbar. "MySearch" is a search bar application that integrates with Internet Explorer. This is not a virus or a trojan. It is detected as a potentially unwanted program. If you knowingly installed it, you may choose to keep it. If you did not please let me know and we will remove it.

*==============================================*

In your next reply, please
  1. Let me know about panasas.com (if you are familiar with this).
  2. Whether or not you would like to keep the MySearch Toolbar.
  3. Also, please post a new Hijack This log for review.

Thanks,
Ken

I have disabled the Anti-Vir, I had only installed it to see if it caught anything that stood out from what Norton had reported, just didn't disable it when I created the last hijack this file.

Panasas.com was the company my wife used to work for, I am sure those settings are fine, not needed anymore but should be a non-issue.

She didn't install the Mysearch toolbar and she only uses Firefox so that can go.

Here is the latest hijackthis file. Thanks again !

Hi csegot,

It looks like Antivir is still active. Your log shows that you still have 2 different Anti-Virus programs running. Please make sure you either disable Antivir again, or un-install it.

Step #1: Remove programs using Add / Remove Programs

Please remove the following programs from your computer by completeing the following steps:
  • Please click Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs
  • Please remove the following programs:
      My Way Search Assistant
  • Do not panic if some programs listed are not present.
  • Once you have completed removing the above prgrams, you may exit the Control Panel

*==============================================*

Step #2: Remove malware lines using Hijack This

Please start HiJackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on "Do A System Scan Only".
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries by clicking on them:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://bfc.myway.com/search/de_srchlft.html

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HIJACKTHIS and click on "Fix Checked".

Once complete, please exit HiJackThis.

*===============================================*

Step #3: Update Java

Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
  • Note: If you don't want the Google toolbar, make sure you uncheck the option included in the installer!

*===============================================*

Step #4: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Scan

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.

Due to Lack of response this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
