Hi
No need to be sorry. I think this infection might be being stubborn. Hopefully the following tool will sort it out.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this webpage: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofi ... e-combofix

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

ComboFix disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before ComboFix completes its run. If ComboFix runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine

Sorry for being so long in replying, but I cannot get Combofix to work! I´ve installed and reinstalled it, installed Recovery Console, but Combofix starts the scan then reboots without giving me a log file. There is no Combofix.txt at c:\ What should I do?

Hi
Can you please move the file ComboFix.exe from your desktop into the root of your system drive.
Your system drive is the location where Windows is installed. This is normally C:\
Please see the screenshot below as an example:

Hi
I'd like to try and get a little more information.

Please make sure that all programs are closed when installing Java.

  1. Click here to visit Java's website.
  2. Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6. Click on Download.
  3. Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
  4. Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
  5. Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
  6. Click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
  7. Double click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install Java.
  8. After the Java installation has finished, please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  9. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  10. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  11. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  12. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  13. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  14. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  15. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  16. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  17. Please post this log in your next reply.

Post a New HJT Log

Hi
You have a cracked/hacked version of NOD32 Antivirus which has brought the infection with it.
Use of warez/crack websites and software is illegal and unfortunately unless you remove this program and either get a legitimate copy or use one of the good FREE antivirus programs available, I can no longer continue to assist you.
Please download a free anti-virus software from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEditionClassic

2) avast! 4 Home Edition

3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

You must be a home computer user using your PC for non-commercial purposes

To remove your illegal copy of NOD32 go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
Then remove NOD32 Antivirus system
If you are not prompted to, please restart your computer
Then install one of the antivirus programs downloaded from the above instructions

I must also warn you that you have a Dialer infection that may be dialing premium-rate lines through your dial-up internet connection!
Please download and install a-squared Anti-Dialer which is a free program that scans for, removes and protects against malicious dialer programs.

Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.

I bought this computer second hand and it came with a lot of pre installed software, including the antivirus. I guess I got more than I bargained for... I should have formatted it and probably will do so after all this! I´ve removed Nod 32 and installed AVG as per your suggestion. Also the anti-dialler, but the scan didn´t come up with anything... I wonder why?

The reason for the "not found" is that over the weekend I removed everything to do with Nod32 from the computer, and H:/ is an external drive that came with computer which I formatted and removed.

Hi

Please open HijackThis
Click Scan Only
Place a checkmark against the following entry:
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k
Close ALL open programs except HijackThis
Click Fix checked
Close HijackThis

Let's clear out the programs we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.

  • Double click OTMoveIt2.exe to launch it.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button.
  • OTMoveIt will download a list from the Internet, if your firewall or other defensive programs alerts you, allow it access.
  • You will be prompted to allow the clean up procedure, click Yes
  • When finished exit out of OTMoveIt2
  • Now delete OTMoveIt2.exe (if still present)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
    Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm
  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  3. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  4. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  5. Use Spybot Search & Destroy - Make sure you update Spybot S&D at least once per week. After updating use the Immunizer function to protect you from malicious websites.
  6. Install WinPatrol - Download and install Winpatrol by BillP Studios.
This program can monitor what software start with Windows. You can delay startup for some programs and stop malicious programs from starting up. It can also view some hidden files.
    Download it from here
  7. Install ThreatFire - Download and install ThreatFire. This program defends against malware by detecting certain malicious behaviours. It is configured "out-of-the-box" and acts as a complement to your Antivirus software. It can be downloaded here:
    PC Tools ThreatFire
  8. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
