Help Suspected Malware has invaded my Computer

Unread postby Bigjunk » June 3rd, 2008, 6:39 pm

I had a bad malware program removed from my computer today with the help of a company. They left me with the software to remove any other malware I might find. The program at my disposal is called Hijack This. Later in the same day another suspected malware program appeared on my PC. many programs are crashing. Speed and response time of my PC is way down. I did a system scan using the Hijack This program. A list of suspect programs was created. However a warning was attached saying don't take any action until you get it reviewed by an expert. That is why I am here. I need help identifing the threat programs from the list below.

Thank You for your help

Hello, and welcome to Malware Removal Forums.
My name is Matt and I will be assisting you with your malware issues.
Please be patient as I need some time to review your HijackThis log and I will post back recommendations for repairs.
As I am still on training, everything that I post to you, must be checked by a Teacher. Thus, there may be a tiny bit of a delay between posts, but it shouldn't be too long.

  • Whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! If you have any questions or you're stuck in there please reply it to me. I will try my best to help you! Not having symptoms of malware doesn't mean that you are clean!
  • Please do not carry out tasks on your own before I reply as this will only complicate things and may mean that my instructions are useless or dangerous!
  • Please bookmark or favourite this page. In case you need it as reference or etc.

Hi
I notice you have CyberDefender installed. This program has a dubious and tainted history, as it was once listed on the Rogue AntiSpyware list. Although the choice resides with you, I recommend that you uninstall this sub-standard program and chose one of the many excellent free programs to use instead.
To remove CyberDefender click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
Find CyberDefender and click Change/Remove

Some of the malware on your pc might also be removed through Add/Remove Programs
Select Netcom3 Cleaner 1.0 and click Change/Remove (do not worry if this entry is not present)

After this has completed please restart your computer
NOTE: please be careful when answering any questions from uninstallers as they may try to trick you!

Please open HijackThis
  • Click Scan only
  • Place checkmarks against the following only (some entries may not be present after previous steps):
    • O2 - BHO: LabelCommand module - {18CB1A7B-94CD-4582-8022-ADA16851E44B} - C:\Program Files\LabelCommand\LabelCommand.dll
  • Close ALL open windows except HijackThis
  • Click Fix checked
  • Return to the Main menu
  • Click on Open the Misc Tools section
  • Look under System tools
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager... button
  • Click on the Save list... button
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt
  • Notepad will open. Please copy and paste the contents of this log in your next reply
See details in this link.
http://img.bleepingcomputer.com/tutoria ... ll-man.jpg

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
Code: Select all
sc stop Netcom3
sc delete Netcom3

Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.

Download OTMoveIt2 by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
Code: Select all
C:\Program Files\LabelCommand
C:\Program Files\Netcom3 Cleaner

  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2

Please RESTART your pc

===============================
In your next reply can I please see the following:
  • uninstall_list.txt
  • OTMoveIt2 log
  • a new HijackThis log

Hi
Lets find that log from OTMoveIt2:
Open Notepad by clicking Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad
Click File > Open
In the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Next Click Start > Control Panel > Add/remove Programs
Uninstall all of the programs listed below (if found):
Adobe Reader 7.0 ***NOTE: Do not uninstall Adobe Acrobat 7.0 as this is a purchased program***
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 4
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 5
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
Java(TM) 6 Update 2
Java(TM) 6 Update 3
Java(TM) 6 Update 5
LabelCommand <- Clicking on this should give you a prompt to remove the entry from the Add/Remove Programs list
Screensavers Installer Version 2

For each program click the Change/Remove button
After completing this, please restart your computer

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6u6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 8.
You can download it from here to your Desktop
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
    The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\<User name>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Copy and Paste the log into your next reply

===============================
In your next reply can I please see the following:

Hi
Bigjunk wrote:Also I tried to download Netcom3 Cleaner 1.0 but only could only get a scan only program that wanted me to purchase an edition with usable features
We removed the Netcom3 cleaner program because it is a Rogue AntiSpyware product and will not improve the security of your machine. I'm not sure why you reinstalled it, if my instructions were unclear then please tell me. We will now remove Netcom3 again, I recommend you follow the instructions as posted and if something doesn't make sense then please let me know.

Click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
Look for Netcom3 Cleaner 1.0
Click Change/Remove
NOTE: Be wary of any questions asked by uninstallers as they may try to trick you!
Restart your computer

Open HijackThis
Click Scan only
Place a checkmark against the following:
  • O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SpyClean] C:\Program Files\Netcom3 Cleaner\SpyClean.exe
Close ALL open programs except HijackThis
Click Fix checked
Close HijackThis

Open Notepad: press Start->Run, type notepad into the box and press OK
Select Format from the top menu and make sure Word Wrap is NOT checked.
Then, copy/paste the contents of the following code box into Notepad:
Code: Select all
sc stop Netcom3
sc delete Netcom3

Select File and Save as
Save it to your Desktop as "runme.bat" (you MUST type the quotes)
Locate runme.bat on your Desktop and double-click it.
A black box should open and close after a short time, this is normal.

  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
Code: Select all
C:\Program Files\Netcom3 Cleaner

  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

===============================
In your next reply can I please see the following:
  • OTMoveIt log (this can be located in the following folder C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles)
  • a new HijackThis log

Hi

Don't worry, we all make mistakes.

Your computer is looking good now. How is it behaving?
Let's clear out the programs we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.

  • Double click OTMoveIt2.exe to launch it.
  • Click on the CleanUp! button.
  • OTMoveIt will download a list from the Internet, if your firewall or other defensive programs alerts you, allow it access.
  • You will be prompted to allow the clean up procedure, click Yes
  • When finished exit out of OTMoveIt2
  • Now delete OTMoveIt2.exe (if still present)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

  1. Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
    Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm
  2. Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    1. From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    2. Click once on the Security tab
    3. Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    4. Click once on the Custom Level button.
      1. Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      2. Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      3. Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      4. Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      5. Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      6. Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      7. When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      8. If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    5. Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  3. Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  4. Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  5. Install WinPatrol - Download and install Winpatrol by BillP Studios.
This program can monitor what software start with Windows. You can delay startup for some programs and stop malicious programs from starting up. It can also view some hidden files.
    Download it from here
  6. Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. A article on anti-malware products with links for this program and others can be found here:
Computer Safety on line - Anti-Malware
  7. Install ThreatFire - Download and install ThreatFire. This program defends against malware by detecting certain malicious behaviours. It is configured "out-of-the-box" and acts as a complement to your Antivirus software. It can be downloaded here:
    PC Tools ThreatFire
  8. Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
