Hi

Then we use this instead:

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be found here: C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
  • Please post contents of that file in your next reply.

Re: Computer is running slow

Unread postby Dreemerz » June 9th, 2008, 11:18 pm

A weird issue popped up today. I'm not really sure what it means since I never heard of it before. But randomly, I will hear this alert or siren type of sound from my headphones. I don't use speakers and instead just plug in a headset to the computer. Sometimes it won't happen for an hour 1 or 2 and others it will happen 2-3 times in a few minutes. It's just a somewhat annoying, "Errr" noise. I'm not sure how to explain it really. Any idea on what this could be?

I did google it and it seems like it could be an overheating issue, but everyone says it comes from their computer tower. The tower seems fine as far as noise goes. The noise I'm hearing is clearly from the headphones. If I adjust the volume, the noise lowers or goes higher with it. I've been on this computer for about two weeks and haven't heard it until today. Come to think of it, today was rather hot.

I've also already checked the fans inside and they all appear to be running. I can feel air being blown from them. I'm not really sure what to do and I'm worried that this computer is close to breaking.

Edit - I haven't done the scan yet. I didn't even notice that the page went onto a second one and had been waiting for your response all this time. I would like to know what is causing this noise though before I start running any heavy things like scanning on it.

Hi

That sounds like some kind of hardware issue to me.

Those are not unfortunately my field so I can't do much but to redirect you to some windows forums after we have got you clean.

Temperature might affect, yes.

Please try to scan with mbam next and let me know if that sounds re-occurs.

At the time I was just listening to streaming music and the computer was running louder.

I thought the overheating noise came from the tower, and not the speakers though? Also, when a computer overheats and gets too hot. It will just shut off before any damage is done right?

Here is the log you asked for.

Hi

Yes it should shutdown with default settings.

Anyway, adding another fan (maybe to computer case) would be good.

Open HijackThis, click do a system scan only and checkmark this:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Cpue] "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\YSTEM3~1\netdde.exe" -vt ndrv

Close all windows including browser and press fix checked.

Reboot.

Post back a fresh HijackThis log and tell me if any problems left?

The computer still seems rather slow, but it improved some. I guess it was more on the computer itself then I thought.

Only issues left are that noise, cpu usage and svchost.exe.

You know about the noise already. There is something odd though. It only seems to go off between 3pm and 7pm. It never goes off in the morning, afternoon or into the night. Although it is a lot cooler outside of those times. So maybe it is overheating or just warning me. I can keep using the computer as normal when the alert happens.

I also got everest and cpucool to monitor the temp. The second one is just to compare the numbers. Usually under load the computer will run into the 60ish C and sometimes 65ishC. When I'm not doing anything heavy or on it. It runs at about 54C. Those temps are constant through the whole day. I'm not really sure what is the warning temp is though or how accurate these programs are.

Another thing that is puzzling me is the sound's source. I thought overheating came from inside the tower? I did look inside of it and it is rather dusty. I plan to clean it out. But I didn't see anything that looked like a speaker. Would the computer just default the noise to my headphones in that case?

I don't know what's up with the cpu usage. It's sitting at 100% right now and I'm not doing anything but this. The computer isn't running harder either and things still seem to open in a reasonable amount of time.

Lately, typically a minute or two after boot up, the computer will start to run faster and louder. I looked in the task manager and one of the svchosts goes crazy. It's mem usage shoots up to 80,000k to 100,000k. It stays like this for a minute or two before calming down and dropping back to a lower amount.

That's it for the problems. Is there any other steps I can take to quicken the computer? Such as choosing what not to start up with the computer. 43 processes are running right now and that seems kind of high. More so since before the cpu usage spiked around 3-10% at the start of this.

You should clean then, yes. Temperatures and noise should both go down after that.

"Lately, typically a minute or two after boot up, the computer will start to run faster and louder. I looked in the task manager and one of the svchosts goes crazy. That is most likely related to windows updates. Are they set to automatic?

You can remove these from starting with HijackThis:

O4 - Startup: Adobe Gamma.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Calibration\Adobe Gamma Loader.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 7.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Kodak EasyShare software.lnk = C:\Program Files\Kodak\Kodak EasyShare software\bin\EasyShare.exe

I also recommend to uninstall ZoneAlarm SpyBlocker.

They are.

Do I just place a check next to them and fix them or is there another way to do it?

I'm also guessing the 100% cpu usage thing is nothing to worry about?

Hi

"They are."

So that explains it. Try to switch them to manual or disabled and tell me if it helped.

"Do I just place a check next to them and fix them or is there another way to do it?"

Yes, that is the way.

As for 100% cpu usage it depends on which processes are using the most of CPU.

I set it to notify me if there were updates, but not automatically download and install them. So it's on manual pretty much. The svchost.exe still freaked out though for a minute before calming down.

I actually figured out this one. There was a process called CooLSRV.exe taking up 99 cpu (When svchost wasn't going crazy). I googled it and it belongs to cpucool. I ended the process and the cpu usage dropped down to the spikey 2-10% it likes to go at. I'll probably just uninstall cpucool since I don't really need it. Unless you feel it'd be a good idea to keep it on.

As for the start ups. I went ahead and removed all you listed, and removed ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker. The system did seem to boot up a little quicker. So that's good.

I think that only totally disabling it will stop svchost.exe thing, unfortunately. It is a bug.

CpuCool can use a lot processor so it might be wise to uninstall it, yes.

Any other concerns? :)

Not really. The only thing that is worrying me still is that siren noise. I don't want this computer to break, more so since I don't have a new motherboard to fix my own yet. I might just end up getting a new one though since it's 5 years old.

I thought that noise was supposed to come out of the tower though? Something about the motherboard has a speaker on it. I looked inside though and saw no speaker of any kind. So it is possible that the alert noise would just default to my headset instead?

Hi

Yes, that is possible.

I think that best thing here would be taking computer somewhere to check.
