Possible malware showing me down.

Hello, I have possible malware slowing down my web browsing. I can't turn pages very easy and I have mostly web pages hanging. I also have very jerky scroll bar movements (mostly delayed actions). MS Task Manager reports I have good CPU usage left at 99% free right now. Typing in this forum is also showing me some delays. I use Firefox as my main browser. However, I also have Explorer. My problems seem to be mostly Firefox related but I am not really sure. I searched for viruses via AVG 8. I used Spybot Search & Destroy. Both programs found files that I deleted but I still have the same problems prior to scan & deletion.

- Download and run CrapCleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/
Note: in CCleaner: go to <options/advanced> Uncheck "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours").

- Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebyte's ... d5756.html to the desktop.

- Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
- When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
- When installation has finished, make sure you leave both these checked:
- Update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
- Launch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
- Then click Finish.

- MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
- On the Scanner tab:
- Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
- Then click on the Scan button.
- The next screen will ask you to select the drives to scan. Leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.

- The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.

When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
- Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
- Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
- Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)

The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log and exit MBAM.

NB - If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process and, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Please post back the MBAM report along with a fresh HJT log.

Thanks Chris.

The scans didn't find anything bad. Perhaps my pages are turning a bit faster now and scrolling isn't as bad. However, I don't feel as though I am back to were I was a few days ago. Thinking back, I updated AVG to v.8 recently. I had to uninstall Ewido anti-spyware to allow the updates to AVG because AVG has it's own anti-spyware. I wasn't happy about that but I guess AVG now owns Ewido. As I said before, I think my slow down is mostly Firefox related because Explorer is slow but not like Firefox is now.

Is anyone else reporting problems with the new version of AVG? I really like using Firefox much better than Explorer. Perhaps I have to make a choice to ditch Firefox or AVG? I don't want to do either but at the cost of my slow browsing something has to be done. To be honest, it would have been easier if spyware was found and slowing me down because at least I can fix it

I also have avg8 installed and no slowdowns. It's possible that your internet connection is temporarily slow...

You need to update Java, as the old version you have installed is exploitable. Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6' or higher and press the 'Download' button.
Reboot.
Uninstall any previous Java versions from Control Panel, add-remove programs afterward.

Thank you Chris, I was not sure if my Java was outdated although from time to time I do get an error message saying I need to update. Prior to this, each time I tried the update didn't take. Java or Sun Java was not showing up in my Add Remove Programs either. I could only access it via my Control Panel. After the new download a moment ago and a fresh reboot my Add Remove Programs shows Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_05. It also shows Java 6 update 5 and Java 6 update 6. Do I leave all three of those or remove any?

I think I found a fix for my browser problem. I’m going to test drive it for a while to make sure. If I am fixed, I’ll be sure to post back what I did in case you ever see a problem like mine again. In any event, I'll post back after several hours so you don't wonder.

No doubt my serious lag is responsible to AVG 8 and its LinkScanner. After researching further, I found many other people had the same complaints I had when they use AVG 8 and Firefox. One person reported their problems disappeared after disabling the LinkScanner. I tried it and my problems instantly vanished. I tested it for several hours. Later I enabled the LinkScanner again and my serious lag started all over again. Problem solved although my AVG 8 is not working to its full potential.

Chris thanks again. You might not have trouble with AVG 8 but you might not be using Firefox as your main browser. The lesson learned by me is to never upgrade certain applications until I have to (I still had time), have good reason to, and/or after new applications have been tested thoroughly.
