Help with infection

Unread postby pharhp » June 8th, 2008, 12:29 pm

Hello all,

I suckered myself into opening an executable I should not have and need some help ensuring that my system is clean. I was running PC tools spyware doctor when I opened the offending file and I think it helped minimize the impacts but I am not sure. I also have a question about on odd thing that I had not seen before that happened with this infection.

Something locked the system so that I could not move my mouse outside of a small window with a text verification box that claim to be checking that I was the owner of the computer. It also somehow disabled the standard task manager (it is still greyed out when I right click on the taskbar). I have process explorer enabled to hijack the task manager and it did come up with a ctl-alt-del. The malware/spyware/virus started spawning a large number of tasks that I was able to kill of through sysexplorer and eventually get back into the system. Since then I have ran the online versions of bitdefender and removed several virsus as well as running a full sweep of spyware doctor and having it do removals.

I have also gone through with autoruns and removed a few things that were offending (things I know I did not install and are not Microsoft items).

So here comes my hijack this logs:

Hello and welcome to the forums

My name is flashh4 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:
1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)
4. Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
5. Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.

If you can do those things, everything should go smoothly

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Note: I am still in training at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

I will be back as soon as possible with a fix !!

Thanks
Chuck

Howdy pharhp, Please follow the instructions in the exact order as posted.

P2P PROGRAMS

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

BitTorrent 5.0.9

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

Also available here.

My recommendation is you go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

If you wish to keep them, please do not use them until your computer is cleaned.

Go here and scroll to find the orange bar Remove CoolWebSearch. Click on it and save cwshredder.exe on your desktop and have it ready to use.
Don't use it yet.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now run cwshredder.
Click Scan only and fix what ever it finds and click exit

NEXT

Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading ComboFix at your DESKTOP :
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

Additional links to download the tool:
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe

Note: The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log so we may continue cleaning the system.

Please post in your next reply to this topic;
1. ComboFix log/report
2. New HJT log

Thanks
Chuck

Hi Chuck,

A quick question before I install the recovery console. I dual boot XP and Vista using the vista boot loader. Will installing the recovery console interfere with this configuration?

Thank You,

Frank

Hi Chuck,

I went ahead and chanced it. I installed the recovery shell and run combo fix. Things went well except that it did blow away my boot loader configuration. I know how to fix that issue though so no worries there.

Here are the logs:

Howdy pharhp, just a little work left.

Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 6.
  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Go to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6 and click on Download button.
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Please click this link to open Kaspersky Online Scanner:
http://www.kaspersky.com/kos/eng/partne ... bscan.html

Press on the Accept button and install any components it needs.

* The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
* After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
* This will start the program and scan your system.
* The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
* Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
* Click on the Save Report As... button.
* Change the file type to Text file (*.txt), type a filename such as kaspersky and save it to your Desktop
* Post the contents of the report in your next response.

Once complete, please post the Kaspersky report and a new HijackThis log.
Also, describe how your computer is running now.

Thanks
Chuck
