Screen saver bugs and desktop

Unread postby Rhona » June 5th, 2008, 12:52 am

Hello,

Last night out of the blue my computers desktop changed (cannot change it back) and the screen saver has bugs.

The message that is stuck on my desktop says "Warning Spyware detected on your computer"[/quote] Second line says "Install a anti-virus or spyware remover to clean your computer".

I've tried numerous things but to no avail. Below is my hijackthis log. I would greatly appreciate your help and knowledge in resolving this issue.

Get a Hijackthis Log

  • Click on the shortcut on your desktop to open Hijackthis. If you cannot find this, goto Start > All Programs > Hijackthis > then Click on Hijackthis.exe
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Copy/Paste the log to your next reply please.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
Don't have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Download and Run SmitfraudFix
Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Run the file, it will extract Smitfraudfix to its own folder and run.

Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note: process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.
http://www.beyondlogic.org/consulting/proc...processutil.htm

Please post this new Hijackthis log and the SmitfraudFix log on your next reply.

Hello,

Thanks so much for your help! I did find the bug screen save file and deleted it. I also found the bmp file phccm7j0el1r.bmp and deleted it also. My McAfee anti-virus software still notifies me of a Trojan/Virus each time the system is booted up. McAfee asks if I want to remove it and when I click yes I get the notification that the computer has to be restarted in order remove the infection. Of course that doesn't work!

Please do not attempt to fix this problem yourself. I know you want your computer malware free as soon as possible but you could do harm by doing things yourself.

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and Download and Execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

We can attempt to clean this machine but i can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

If you decide to try and fix your system, please follow the instructions below this black line. If you do NOT want to fix your system, please post telling me that you have decided to reformat.

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

Hello,

Thank you again for your help. I would like to try the 2nd choice of ridding my computer of the backdoor trojan. I uninstalled the McAfee Anti-Virus software and installed the TrendMicro 30 day trial antivirus / spyware and did a scan. There were a lot of "Generic Trojan" type instances found and it appears that most of them were quarantined and/or deleted by the TrendMicro software.

I will follow the instructions regarding the Combofix and Recovery Console and post the ComboFix txt log and a new instance of HiJackThis.

Thanks again. I am having a difficult time with the recovery console (i.e. installation of) because I have Service Pack 3 and my original MS Win XP Pro CD does not have any Service Packs.

I am receiving the message that the OS on my computer has a newer version than the CD. I checked the ComboFix website and it mentions having service pack 2 but not SP3.

Any suggestions?

According to my teacher, the one for Service Pack 2 works on Vista too!

Go to Microsoft's website => http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310994

Select the download that's appropriate for your Operating System

Image

For you, its Service Pack 2.

Download the file & save it as it's originally named, next to ComboFix.exe.

Now close all open windows and programs, including all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  • Drag the setup package onto ComboFix.exe and drop it.

  • Follow the prompts to start ComboFix and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Recovery Console.

  • At the next prompt, click 'Yes' to run the full ComboFix scan.

  • When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
