tluerding - this is ugly

Unread postby tluerding » May 29th, 2008, 12:21 am

This is ugly.

Windows XP Pro -- Hard Drive Partitioned to C: and E:

1) Lots of "Your computer is infected" popups
2) Desktop background blue
3) Browser (IE7) homepage reset to Ultimate Cleaner 2007

Spybot found nothing
SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition and/or HJT seemed to clear up the Ult Cleaner 2007, but upon reboot - will not reboot normally.

Cannot see C: in normal boot mode (can see it in Safe Mode)

Rebooting to last known good config brings the following errors:

RUNDLL
Error loading
c:\windows\system32\rjfeggud.dll

and

CANNOT FIND FILE:
///c:/windows/privacy_danger/index.htm
Make sure the path or internet address is correct

-It also does not/has not given me the option to boot into my Admin account (which is what I always boot into) and gives me no capabilities such as Task Manager (has been disabled by your administrator)

-My desktop is now white, nothing happens when I right-click on desttop

-When I click on my start button, I don't even get "All Programs" or "My Computer" or any of the standard options on the right side of the start menu.

Hi,tluerding

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt

P2P Warning!

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

LimeWire

Please note that as long as you are using any form of Peer-to-Peer networking and downloading files from non-documented sources, you can expect infestations of malware to occur
Once upon a time, P2P file sharing was fairly safe. That is no longer true. You may continue to use P2P sharing at your own risk; however, please keep in mind that this practice may be the source of your current malware infestation

I'd like you to read the Guidelines for P2P Programs where we explain why it's not a good idea to have them.

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/community/columns/protection.mspx
http://www.techweb.com/wire/160500554
http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm

I would recommend that you uninstall LimeWire, however that choice is up to you.
If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

______________

Optional - VIEWPOINT MANAGER
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546
Additional info:Here
I suggest you remove the program now. Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.
  • Viewpoint
  • Viewpoint Manager
  • Viewpoint Media Player
  • Viewpoint Toolbar
Your call.

___________________

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint.
Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player.
The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information.
CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.'

Full Tilt Poker has been reported as being malware-related so I strongly recommend you remove it.

Re: tluerding - this is ugly

Unread postby tluerding » May 30th, 2008, 9:14 am

Good thus far.

-Virus alerts gone
-No errors at bootup
-No military time

Removed Limewire and Viewpoint Manager.

Main concern thus far – there are only two user accounts on this box – Admin (or Administrator) and ToddsPC. I always booted directly into my Admin account and used it exclusively.

Now it boots directly into ToddsPC and when I click Start>Switch user - “Admin” does not appear.

Admin account appears in Safe Mode, however.

Thanks.

Make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

Image

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

1 - Kaspersky Online Scan
With the exception of Internet Explorer, which must be used for this scan, keep ALL programs closed
Please do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the licence accepted, reset to 100%.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    o Scan Options:
    + Scan Archives
    + Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Please do not use your computer while the scan is running. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Click the Save Report As... button (see red arrow below)

    Image

  • In the Save as... prompt, select Desktop
  • In the File name box, name the file KasScan-ddmmyy (or similar)
  • In the Save as type prompt, select Text file (see below)

    Image

  • Copy and paste the report in your next post.
Note: It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware application you use.

please post uninstall list and kaspersky report.

Thanks dan

Delete bad programs
  • Click Start
  • Go to Control Panel
  • Go to Add/Remove Programs
  • Find and click Remove for the following (if present). It could be that they have a space or something between it , but it has to look like it:

  • Viewpoint Media Player

**Take care when answering any questions posed by an uninstaller. Some questions may be worded to deceive you into keeping the program.

Download OTMoveIt2 by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
Code: Select all
C:\Documents and Settings\Todd's PC\Desktop\SmitfraudFix
C:\Documents and Settings\Todd's PC\Desktop\SmitfraudFix.exe

  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2

Update Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

Your JRE is out of date. The current version is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.

  1. Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs. Locate Java(TM) 6 Update 5 and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.
  2. Repeat for these old versions of JRE:
      J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 10
      J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11
      J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
      J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9
      Java(TM) 6 Update 2
      Java(TM) 6 Update 3
      Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1

  3. Click here to visit Java's website.
  4. Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6. Click on Download.
  5. Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
  6. Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
  7. Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
  8. Click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
  9. Run this installation to update your Java.

let me have otmoveit2 report and new HJT log and let me know how things are!

Questions/Comments:

The box seems to be running normally now.

1) I kept booting into a user account, and having no admin functions on my start menu. Good grief. It was just hidden. Going into Taskbar and Start Menu properties, I just had to change the settings. That problem solved.

2) For a couple days I’ve been getting the yellow Microsoft shield telling me that updates are ready for my computer. It appears to be legit. Download updates?

3) Antivirus. I have had (I thought) generally good success with AVG. This particular incident came from somebody opening a file that they shouldn’t have opened. (There are six people with access to this box, so it could have been anyone.) Any better than others - without breaking my bank account?

4) Do I need to keep any of the programs that I downloaded for this little adventure – shall I just tuck them away in a folder. I can see that perhaps MalwareByte and Hijack this would be useful; will I ever need ComboFix, OTMoveit,. I also downloaded SuperAntiSpyware (free edition). They don’t really take up much space, I suppose.

Ok, programs to keep! malwarebytes a good program but remember to update on a reglar basis.
I will take away combofix and otmoveit2 as they are powerful tools and if not guided you can bork your system.
I will give some advice in my closing speech for different programs you can try out.

UNINSTALL COMBOFIX

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • Image
You can also delete any logs we have produced, and empty your Recycle bin.

And just to make sure it doesn't run:

Close all windows and try typing this command directly in and see if ComboFix runs.

Remember to use the " marks and there is a space between exe" and /killall

Start > Run > type "%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

If ComboFix runs, please post the log.

Let me know when carried out.

ComboFix is uninstalled.
When I ran the /Killall command, it didn't find the program, so I'm assuming that's cool.

Logs deleted. Recycle Bin emptied.

I can't even get my kids to empty the trash bin that quickly.

Click on CleanUp!.

You will receive a prompt that it has finished downloaded a list. Click OK.

After this, it will prompt you to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

Well done for staying with me!
Congratulations you are clean! :)
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Create a new System Restore Point
This is a good time to clear your existing system restore points and establish a new clean restore point:
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore
  • Select Create a restore point, and Ok it.
  • Next, go to Start > Run and type in cleanmgr
  • Select the More options tab
  • Choose the option to clean up system restore and OK it.
This will remove all restore points except the new one you just created.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Spybot Search and Destroy 1.5.2
Download it from here. Just choose a mirror and off you go.
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spybot properly here
Find here changes from older version 1.4 here

Install Spyware Guard
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Guard here

Install SpyWare Blaster
Download it from here
Find here the tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster here

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer.

Please check out Tony Klein's article "How did I get infected in the first place?"

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

First - I am not a computer novice - in fact I do desktop support, however nothing near the level of expertise demonstrated by you on this problem. This was way out of my league.

You, dan12, and everyone at MRU are to be commended for the professional service you provde.

The prompt responses and professional handling of my concerns made a horrible situation bearable, and I thank you for that.

I hope I never talk to you again. ;)

Thank you very much.
