Malware?

Unread postby Jeff » May 16th, 2008, 9:01 pm

Hello:

Last evening I downloaded/ran what I suspected to be a Codec for Windows Media Player. After clicking the RUN button, my tray icons disappeared and my desktop icons began disappearing then reappearing, then disappearing altogether. Any program that I attempted to run would automatically shutdown. I left my computer unplugged for 12 hours then attempted to run various spyware removers. Also, I ran a Windows file check using 'sfc /scannow'. Several files had to be reinstalled via my XP CD. Below is the results to HijackThis. I have had few desktop interruptions this evening. What could have happened, or is going on? Thank you for any suggestions, and of course, for analyzing this HijackThis log.

welcome to malwareremoval forums

My name is Dan, and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please note! that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.

Unless informed of in advance, failure to post replies within 5 days will result in this thread being closed.

It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

I'm presently looking over your log and hope not to be too long.
Will be back with you as soon as I can.

Hi, Jeff, yes you have a couple of infections we need to deal with.

spybot search & destroy sdhelper

Disable spybot search & destroy\SDHelper
Open up spybot search & destroy go to mode check advanced mode.
Go to bottom left of panel and click tools then click resident
uncheck resident
SDHelper
We will need to do this in reverse to enable when fix is done

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Hi Jeff, pleased you found us again.

Your TeaTimer is going to interfere with what we are trying to do. I need you to disable it and we'll make a "reset" file for it so when you turn it back on it won't put the bad entries back.

To shut off TeaTimer:

1.) Open Spybot and click on Mode and check Advanced Mode
2.) Check yes to next window.
3.) Click on Tools in bottom left hand corner.
4.) Click on System Startup icon.
5.) Uncheck Teatimer box.
6.) Click Allow Change box.

You can follow this link if you need help: http://russelltexas.com/malware/teatimer.htm

Leave it disabled till I tell you it's ok to turn it back on.

spybot search & destroy sdhelper

Disable spybot search & destroy\SDHelper
Open up spybot search & destroy go to mode check advanced mode.
Go to bottom left of panel and click tools then click resident
uncheck resident
SDHelper
We will need to do this in reverse to enable when fix is done

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.

Hello, Dan:

I have performed your requested tasks, and the ComboFix and HijackThis reports are posted below.

However, when attempting to disable Spybot Search and Destroy Teatimer, the "Allow Changes" prompt never popped up. I am hoping the disabling of the Teatimer and Resident settings "stuck". Until you tell me to reenable them, they are still disabled?

Thank you for all of your help and support. I greatly appreciate it. :)

Make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

Image

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Run HijackThis, select Do a system scan only and place checks against the following entries (if they are still present)

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {2318C2B1-4965-11d4-9B18-009027A5CD4F} - (no file)

WITH ALL OTHER WINDOWS CLOSED Click on Fix Checked and exit

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Code: Select all
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnmjggF.dll
Folder::
C:\SDFix
Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{22766A55-AB19-431E-B1E4-2A1F57E8E1E9}]

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Image

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt"

Note for Vista Users: Eset is compatible but Internet Explorer must be run as Administrator. To do this, right-click on the IE icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select "Run as Administrator" from the context menu.

  2. Click on the Start button next to it.
  3. When prompted to run ActiveX. click Yes.
  4. You will be asked to install an ActiveX. Click Install.

Update Java Runtime Environment (JRE)

Your JRE is out of date. The current version is Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.

  1. Click on Start > Control Panel and double click on Add/Remove Programs. Locate Java(TM) 6 Update 5 and click on Change/Remove to uninstall it.
  2. Repeat for these old versions of JRE:
      Java(TM) 6 Update 4
  3. Click here to visit Java's website.
  4. Scroll down to Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6. Click on Download.
  5. Select Windows from the drop-down list for Platform.
  6. Select Multi-language from the drop-down list for Language.
  7. Check (tick) I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement box and click on Continue.
  8. Click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe link to download it and save this to a convenient location.
  9. Run this installation to update your Java.

Post a new HJT log.
Thanks dan

Unread postby Jeff » May 25th, 2008, 11:38 pm

Hi, Dan:

Java Update 4 and 5 were deleted, and Java Update 6 was installed on my machine. Below this next paragraph is the new HJT log.

Also, this may not be something you are interested in, but something in my PC is keeping me from accessing MSN Zone games (Backgammon). I can play on other machines, but not my own. I contaced MSN about the problem and they had me meticulously uninstall all of their software and reinstall. As a matter of fact, I deleted all MSN gaming files with some of the software you had me run this afternoon (i.e. Malwarebytes, HijackThis, etc.). I then reinstalled, but the games will not load. Do you see anything that would prevent my playing the MSN Zone games? Thanks in advance if you are willing to tackle this insignificant issue.

Thanks, again.

Re: Results of SDFix and HijackThis reports

Unread postby dan12 » May 26th, 2008, 4:49 am

I deleted all MSN gaming files with some of the software you had me run this afternoon (i.e. Malwarebytes, HijackThis, etc.)

Did you try the uninstallers first for the games via add and remove programs?

Can you show me an uninstall list again:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

From your previous list what games have you removed?
