AwesomeHomepage on Desktop and Pop-Ups, plus IE not working.

Unread postby xenabrat » May 28th, 2008, 11:06 am

Hello & thanks in advance for helping out. I am currently running Trend Micro Internet Security as my anti-virus. I've also used the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool. But it keeps coming back. My pop-ups are blank pages in IE (This page cannot be displayed, etc.) and I have no issues with FF except that the homepage keeps resetting to this awesomehomepage.com. My desktop is a giant annoying cartoonish advertisement. I keep changing the wallpaper, but it's back to the ad at each restart.

Also, I'm SURE that I probably deleted something important. I tried to get rid of IE since I am a FF user anyway, and all the annoying stuff was happening in IE, but yet I still have IE trying to open pages - just it never works, even with regular clean websites. I ALWAYS get the page of death that it cannot be displayed. My next step was to reinstall Windows XP, but I'd hate to lose everything I have. I'm an amateur graphic artist and have thousands of files & art on my PC. I have a Gateway, and when we first got it something went wrong and they had to send me a reinstall disk because the original one didn't work - the replacement reinstall disk said eMachine on it, so I never used it (had an eMachine before - what a nightmare). I have the ORIGINAL disk, but not the eMachine one, so my fear is that it won't work if I need to start over.

Here is my TMHT log. I have 5 kids at home so I may be slow as well in responding & taking action. Thanks again in advance! :D

welcome to malwareremoval forums

My name is Dan, and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please note! that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.

Unless informed of in advance, failure to post replies within 5 days will result in this thread being closed.

It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

I'm presently looking over your log and hope not to be too long.
Will be back with you as soon as I can.
Thanks dan

Ok, you have a couple of infections going on.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Okay. Well, all was going fine with this fix until I got the safe mode selection screen. I chose safe mode and a bunch of stuff came up like this -

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\Windows\System32\drivers\

that came up about 30 times with a different driver listed for each one. I couldn't do anything at that point. So I had to shut down the hard way, and it just kept coming up to that screen and I couldn't get past it. I tried every startup option. All to no avail. This is what the never-ending refreshing black screen said (I wrote down everything):

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this.

If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files & folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.

If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the power or reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt

Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)

Start Windows Normally

Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice. Seconds until Windows restarts: 30"

So none of the options worked for me. And if I just let it go, then it would load all those driver names or whatever the multi disk rdisk stuff was, then it would wait a few seconds, then black screen, then a flash of a blue screen that I couldn't see what it said since it wasn't there long enough, then Windows loading screen and then back to the black safe mode selection screen.

I couldn't get online or even to my desktop. So away my PC went to a techie friend, and I am now on a loaner PC. :( Said friend is going to reinstall windows after getting whatever important files I have on my hard drive into his portable hard drive for retrieval later. *crosses fingers*

So, just wanted to keep you posted on what happened, and I really was hopeful it would work. I think you guys have a great site here & am thankful most people who know where to look are lucky enough to fix their PC's with your steps. :) Keep up the great work! Bummer it didn't work for mine, but I think maybe it was beyond repair or something. The only thing I could do was put in my CD that came with the computer and reinstall Windows... BUT I couldn't go through with it for fear of my precious files & photos.

Well, thanks again for your time & effort! If I am ever unlucky enough to have this happen again *crossing fingers I won't*, I know where to come! :)

If you would like me to continue I'm happy to do so, but if your friend is going to reinstall windows, I will close the thread up.
I think at this stage it maybe a little radical for a format but this is your choice.
Let me know how you would like to continue.

I think it's radical as well. But, not being able to use the PC at all while it gets fixed, it's kind of hard to check back on this forum. I don't have a spare PC or laptop, nor do I have access to one during the day. I would have to go to the library each time to print out instructions for the next steps, and that's kind of hard to do with little ones with me at all times. LOL My friend already has it in his hands and I am on his loaner (extra PC) for now. So, please close this topic & thanks for the help you gave (and continue to give others). Thanks again! :)
