Redirecting in Explorer and slow machine

Unread postby BaysFamily » May 11th, 2008, 5:39 pm

Hi,

I have 2 computers connected to a wireless router and 1 laptop. Computer #2 became heavily infected with redirecting and Computer #1 was just starting to have problems. I have not checked my laptop to see if it has problems yet.... I problem at a time!

I have ran AdAware and Spybot in Safe mode and I ran HiJackThis in normal mode. Here is the result. Does it look like I've cleaned up the mess yet?

Hi Lorri, Welcome to the forums!Image

My name is Ken, on these forums I am known as ktreffin. I will be helping you with your current problem. Please note that I am still in training at Malware Removal University, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

HiJackThis logs do take some time to review and research. I would appreciate it if while you are waiting, you could please do the following for me:

Please make an Uninstall List using HiJackThis.

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
    1. Start HijackThis
    2. Click on the Config button
    3. Click on the Misc Tools button
    4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
    5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here in a reply.

As we work together to resolve your problem, please read these instructions carefully. You may wish to print them off or copy them to Notepad.

Lastly, please keep these points in mind:
  • If you have questions, please DON'T hesitate to ask!
  • The instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
  • Please post your replies only to this topic, and please DO NOT start a new thread.
  • Since there may be multiple issues with your system, please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean!"

I am reviewing your log now, and will be back with you shortly. Thank you for your patience.

Ken

Re: Redirecting in Explorer and slow machine

Unread postby ktreffin » May 17th, 2008, 11:08 am

Hello Lorri,

It does appear that you are infected. Before we begin, I need to stress some important points to you.
  • Some of the instructions I will provide may get quite long. I highly recommend that you print a copy of them off or copy them into Notepad.
  • If at any time you have questions, please DON'T hesitate to ask!
  • Please keep in mind that the instructions I give are specific to your current problem and should not be used on other systems.
  • Also, please remember that there may be multiple issues with your system, please continue to follow this thread until I have given you an "All Clean!"

Ready? Lets go....

First thing is I have a question for you. Are you familiar with a program called WeatherServices? I see that you have the Weather Channel items installed, however I also see an entry for WeatherServices. If you are familiar with it, that is fine. If you are not familiar with it, then we will take care of it. Please let me know about this in your next post.

Also, It appears that WeatherBug was installed on this machine but has now been removed. WeatherBug is adware so my instructions will clean the remnants of this installation, if for any reason you do not wish to do this then stop and let me know.

Step #1: Disable Teatimer

Please disable Teatimer as it may interfere with the fix.
First:
  • Right click Spybot in the System Tray (looks like a calendar with a padlock symbol)
  • Choose Exit Spybot S&D Resident
Second:
  • Open Spybot S&D
  • Click Mode, check Advanced Mode
  • Go To Left Panel, Click Tools, then also in left panel, click Resident
  • If your firewall raises a question, say OK
  • Uncheck the box labeled Resident Tea-Timer and OK any prompts.
  • Use File, Exit to terminate Spybot
  • Reboot your machine for the changes to take effect.
Once your log is clean you can re-enable those settings in TeaTimer.

*==============================================*

Step #2: Remove malware lines using Hijack This

Please start HiJackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on "Do A System Scan Only".
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries by clicking on them:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [AlcxMonitor] ALCXMNTR.EXE
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - ?p=ZNfox000
O9 - Extra button: WeatherBug - {AF6CABAB-61F9-4f12-A198-B7D41EF1CB52} - C:\Program Files\AWS\WeatherBug\Weather.exe (file missing) (HKCU)

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HIJACKTHIS and click on "Fix Checked".

Once complete, please exit HiJackThis.

*===============================================*

Step #3: View hidden files and folders

Next, we need to enable the "Show Hidden Folders" Option. To do this, please do the following:
  • Click Start
  • Open My Computer
  • Select the Tools Menu and click Folder Options
  • Select the View Tab. Under the hidden files and folders heading select Show Hidden Files and Folders.
  • Uncheck the Hide Protected Operating System Files (recommended) option.
  • Click Yes to confirm
  • Click OK.

*===============================================*

Step #4 Delete all bad files and folders

Open Windows Explorer by right clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore. Navigate to and find the following FILES: If found, delete the following (some may not be present after previous steps):

C:\WINDOWS\ALCMTR.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\ALCXMNTR.EXE

Again, using Windows Explorer, navigate to and find the following FOLDERS: If found, delete the following (some may not be present after previous steps):

C:\Program Files\AWS

After deleting the above files and folders, please be sure to empty your recycle bin.

*===============================================*

Step #5: Download and Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply.
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this: C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

*===============================================*

Step #6: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • A New Hijack This Log
  • Contents of the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Log

Thanks,
Ken

Hi Lorri,

Looks like Malwarebytes' took out all sorts of nasties. Good, we are making progress. You are doing a great job so far. Lets see what else we can find. Please do the following:

I have noticed that you were using quite a few weather programs. Unfortunately you must be careful as to which programs you use, and which can actually introduce Malware onto your system. Malwarebytes' identified parts of the Weather Channel programs as malware, these programs contain adware and probably no longer function normally, so my instructions will remove both Weather Channel programs. If for any reason you do not wish to do this please stop and let me know.

Step #1: Remove programs using Add / Remove Programs

Please remove the following programs from your computer by completeing the following steps:
  • Please click Start > Control Panel > Add / Remove Programs
  • Please remove the following programs:
      The Weather Channel Desktop
      The Weather Channel Toolbar
  • Do not panic if some programs listed are not present.
  • Once you have completed removing the above prgrams, you may exit the Control Panel

*==============================================*

Step #2: Remove malware lines using Hijack This

Please start HiJackThis as you did to generate a log, but this time click on "Do A System Scan Only".
Place a checkmark in the boxes to the left of the following entries by clicking on them:

O2 - BHO: TwcToolbarBhoApp Class - {AA1F9DDB-E605-4ba6-81D4-E427DEE012AD} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\TwcToolbarBho.dll
O3 - Toolbar: The Weather Channel Toolbar - {2E5E800E-6AC0-411E-940A-369530A35E43} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\TwcToolbarIe7.dll
O9 - Extra button: The Weather Channel - {2E5E800E-6AC0-411E-940A-369530A35E43} - (no file)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: The Weather Channel - {2E5E800E-6AC0-411E-940A-369530A35E43} - (no file)

CLOSE ALL OPEN WINDOWS AND BROWSERS - EXCEPT HIJACKTHIS and click on "Fix Checked".

Once complete, please exit HiJackThis.

*===============================================*

Step #3: Delete all bad files and folders

Open Windows Explorer by right clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore. Navigate to and find the following FILES: If found, delete the following (some may not be present after previous steps):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\TwcToolbarBho.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\TwcToolbarIe7.dll

Again, using Windows Explorer, navigate to and find the following FOLDERS: If found, delete the following (some may not be present after previous steps):

C:\Program Files\The Weather Channel FW

After deleting the above files and folders, please be sure to empty your recycle bin.

*===============================================*

If you would like to have a weather program on your system, I recommend that you choose one of these alternatives which are known to be safe:

Weather Pulse
Weather Watcher

or
Get Mozilla Firefox and then get FORECASTFOX!!!
or check the weather at these websites:
Weather Street: US Weather
Intellicast

*===============================================*

Step #4: Update Java

Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 6.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.
  • Note: If you don't want the Google toolbar, make sure you uncheck the option included in the installer!

*===============================================*

Step #5: Run Kaspersky Online Scan

With the exception of Internet Explorer, which must be used for this scan, keep ALL programs closed
Please do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<. You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the licence, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75%. Once the licence accepted, reset to 100%.
  • The program will launch and then start to download the latest definition files.
  • Once the scanner is installed and the definitions downloaded, click Next.
  • Now click on Scan Settings
  • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
+ Extended (If available otherwise Standard)
    o Scan Options:
    + Scan Archives
    + Scan Mail Bases
  • Click OK
  • Now under select a target to scan select My Computer
  • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
  • Please do not use your computer while the scan is running. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
  • Click the Save Report As... button (see red arrow below)

    Image
  • In the Save as... prompt, select Desktop
  • In the File name box, name the file KasScan-ddmmyy (or similar)
  • In the Save as type prompt, select Text file (see below)

    Image
  • Copy and paste the report in your next post.
Note: It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware application you use.

*===============================================*

Step #6: Things to put in your next reply

Please post the following in your next reply:
  • A New Hijack This Log
  • Contents of the Kaspersky Online Scan Log

Thanks,

Hi Ken,

I am just doing a few of your things this morning before I go to work...

I have tried to remove the Weather Channel Desktop but I won't remove. I was able to remove the WC Toolbar. Any suggestions?

Hi Lorri,

I will check with the Expert that I am working with about that. If you could continue with the rest of the instructions while I am checking that would be great. Let me know if you have any other problems. Thanks.

Hi Lorri,

I have checked with the expert I have been working with, and for now, just go ahead and finish the instructions that I have posted. All of the malware components of the Weather Chanel program have been removed, so it shouldn't cause a problem. Let me know if you have any other questions or problems. Thanks.

The Kaspersky Scan took a long time to run. I must have forgotten to turn off my McAfee before it ran.... it took 3 1/2 hrs to run!

Hi Lorri,

Thanks for the logs. Things are looking better. Kaspersky identified a couple of things that we need to take care of. How is the system running? Are you still having problems?

Lets finish this up, please do the following:

Step #1: Remove bad e-mails from Outlook Express

It appears that you have some infected files in your Outlook Express email account. Some are in the Outlook trash, and there are a few in your inbox. Please delete the e-mails from the e-mail addresses that I have listed below as they have been flagged as being bad.

Please look for any e-mails in your in-box from the following e-mail addresses:
  • From "Generic-M:eds" <admin @xboxwarehouses.com>
  • From Generic-<Meds @newelemments.com>
  • Generic-<Meds @newelemments.com>
  • Generic Medication <FreshFlowers @mysesndserrr.com>

PLEASE NOTE: There may be several e-mails from the same e-mail address, all of them must go, so please take your time and make sure you find all of them.

Once you have deleted these e-mails, please make sure that you empty your Outlook Express trash.

In addition, I would like to give you some general e-mail safety tips:

Be careful when opening attachments and downloading files.
  • Never open email attachments, not even if they are from someone you know. If you need to open them, scan them with your antivirus program before opening.
  • Never open emails from unknown senders.
  • Beware of emails that warn about viruses that are spreading, especially those from antivirus vendors. These email addresses can be easily spoofed. Check the antivirus vendor websites to be sure.
  • Be careful of what you download. Only download files from known sources. Also, avoid cracked programs. If you need a particular program that costs too much for you, try finding free alternatives on Sourceforge or Pricelessware.
*===============================================*

Step #2: Remove Spybot Quarentined Files

  1. Please open Spybot Search & Destroy.
  2. Click on Recovery on the left.
  3. Check all items there and click on Purge selected items.
  4. Close Spybot Search & Destroy.

*===============================================*

Step #3: Delete all bad files and folders

Open Windows Explorer by right clicking the Start button and left clicking Explore. Navigate to and find the following FILES: If found, delete the following (some may not be present after previous steps):

C:\Documents and Settings\HP_Owner\My Documents\My Downloads\SmileyCentralPFSetup2.1.50.3-3.ZNfox000.exe

After deleting the above files and folders, please be sure to empty your recycle bin.

*===============================================*

Step #4: Remove Weather Channel entry from uninstall list

We are now going to take care of that Weather Channel entry that is left in your Uninstall List
  • Please open Hijack This.
  • Click on the "Open Misc. Tools Section"
  • Click "Open Uninstall Manager..."
  • Find Weather Channel Desktop entry in the list and click to highlight it
  • Click "Delete this entry"
  • Click Yes
  • Exit Hijack This

Once you have completed the above steps. Please let me know how things are running, and if you are still having trouble.

Thanks,
Ken

Hi Ken,

Things seem to be getting better. It still seems slow when I initially login, but maybe that's because I have too much junk on my computer!

I went to Outlook Express (which I don't use anymore) and deleted all accounts and emptied the trash. So there aren't any email in there anymore. I use Outlook now and I checked to see if there were any and didn't find any. As a rule, I don't open attachments unless I know who they're from, so unless something is embedded within the email that would be the only way. :flower:

Do you think everything is cleaned up now?

Lorri

P.S. I have a laptop to work on next!

Hi Lorri,

A slow down in computer performance can be caused by many different things including malware problems, RAM issues (not enough, errors, etc), Disk errors, etc. Looks like we have definitely made progress on the Malware end, and I am confident that we have taken care of your malware problems.

I would recommend that you use the following link to go to the CastleCops General Computer Problems forum for help from a CastleCops SRT...

http://www.castlecops.com/f120-General_ ... blems.html

I recommend that you register before posting your problem. Registered members can receive notification when there has been a reply to their topic. There is no way for CCSP to notify "guests" when they have received a reply.

Now that you are clean, I got some tips & tricks for you to keep your computer clean and secure. The first few (like removing dangerous tools and Windows Update) have to be done, the others are optional.

It may seem like your system will be too much protected with all these things installed, but a lot of programs aren't running always on the background so don't slow down your computer. Please take a look at the following things:

Create a new, clean System Restore point which you can use in case of future system problems:
Press Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore
Select Create a restore point, then Next, type a name like All Clean then press the Create button and once it's done press Close

Now remove old, infected System Restore points:
Next click Start->Run and type cleanmgr in the box and press OK
Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
Select the More Options tab, under System Restore press Clean up... and say Yes to the prompt
Press OK and Yes to confirm

Re hide your system files To do so, please follow the steps below:
  • Double-click My Computer.
  • Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  • Click the View tab.
  • Put a check by "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  • Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Do not show hidden files and folders."
  • Check "Hide protected operating system files."
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.

Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound/outbound not sure). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly. Here are some firewalls which are free for personal use and most used:
Comodo
Kerio
ZoneAlarm

Visit Microsoft's Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://update.microsoft.com/ regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs. You can download it here:
SpywareBlaster

Install WinPatrol - As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge. You can download it from this website:
WinPatrol
The developer is a well-known man in the MalWare Removal business. If you really like WinPatrol think about upgrading to the PLUS version. It will give you additional features and you will only have to pay once, for your whole malware-free life.

Install MVPS HOSTS - This custom hosts file effectively blocks a wide range of unwanted ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and many hijackers.
For information on how to download and install, please read this tutorial here:
WinHelp2002
Note: Be sure to follow the instructions to disable the DNS Client service before installing a custom hosts file.

Use an alternative Internet Browser - Many of the exploits are directed to users of Internet Explorer. Try using a different browser instead:
Firefox << Most used, I use this one myself.
Opera

Bookmark general cleanup links - It could be that your computer is becoming slower and slower. This is not always the cause of malware. Most of the times it's malware when you're computer is suddenly getting slow or doing strange. When the slowdown increases slowly check (so now bookmark) these links for tips & tricks:
Help! My computer is slow
Slow Computer? Check here first; it may not be malware

Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.

Stand Up and Be Counted!
Please take the time to tell us what you would like to be done about the people who are behind all the problems you have had. We can only get something done about this if the people that we help, like you, are prepared to complain. We have a dedicated forum for collecting these complaints called Malware Complaints. Please register there first!

Have a happy computing day!!
