Task Manager has been disabled--Can't access internet

Unread postby Catbarber » May 16th, 2008, 9:08 am

Looks like Norton I.S. missed this one. First problem showed up as a Malware infection. Almost immediately afterwards I began getting pop-ups from the taskbar saying Spyware has been detected and I needed to follow their link for programs to fix it. Additionally my desktop wallpaper was hijacked and replaced with a generic banner stating the same Spyware was found. Soon after that I lost the ability to connect to the internet. When attempting to see what was running in Task Manager (Cntrl-Alt-Del) is got this annoying window "Task Manager has been disabled by your Administrator" .

Here's my log and I can't thank you enough for any help you can offer to get this bug removed.

Unread postby dan12 » May 16th, 2008, 10:38 am

welcome to malwareremoval forums

My name is Dan, and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please note! that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

Please observe these rules while we work:
  • Perform all actions in the order given.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Stick with it till you're given the all clear.
  • REMEMBER, ABSENCE OF SYMPTOMS DOES NOT MEAN THE INFECTION IS ALL GONE.
If you can do these things, everything should go smoothly.
  • Please note you'll need to have Administrator priviledges to perform the fixes. (XP accounts are Administrator by default)
  • Please let me know if you are using a computer with multiple accounts, as this can affect the instructions given.

Unless informed of in advance, failure to post replies within 5 days will result in this thread being closed.

It may be helpful to you to print out or take a copy of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

I'm presently looking over your log and hope not to be too long.
Will be back with you as soon as I can.
Thanks dan

You may want to print these instructions for reference

We have a few malware processes and files which we need to get rid of.
Please be patient, and follow all of the instructions as given. Please do not reboot unless it is part
of the fix, or you have no other choice. While you are following the fix, you will find it helpful to have
a pen and paper handy to take any notes, so you can let me know what happens.
Typical information that will be helpful will be:
  • Files or folders that will not delete properly
  • Any errors that occur when following a fix or during bootup
  • Notes on your system's operation (sluggish internet, popups, etc)
  • The more information we have, the better our chances to clean your system!

Make a uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.

You will now be presented with a screen similar to the one below:

Image

5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

_______________

This should fix your internet issue.

Download Lspfix. Extract(unzip) it to its own folder. Disconnect from the internet, and close all browser windows. Run LSPFix. Click the "I know what I'm doing" button. In the left hand pane, hilite all instances of webhdll.dll (and nothing else), move them to the "Remove" pane and by clicking the >> button. Click Finish. Reboot to complete the process.

____________

Next we need to stop a process that's running on your computer

To do this...
Startup HJT and select the 4th button entitled
Open the misc tools section

Under where it says system tools click on
Open process manager

Now look for the following processes one by one in the list below, once you find them highlight them then click on the
killl process
button

Download OTMoveIt2 by Old Timer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
Code: Select all
C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmsdkns.exe
c:\program files\webhancer\programs\webhdll.dll

  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt2

Please include in your next post:
  • uninstall list
  • Installed Programs List
  • otmoveit2 report report
  • New highjackthis log

Thanks dan

Ok I started the process and when I saved the Uninstall list, it looked as though the program just closed. It did not give me the option of where to save the file. I will try once again in a few minutes.

Ok I followed your directions exactly and the program seems to close when I press the "save list" button. I don't get a window with options on where to save the file. Is there a default location that it might be saved ? I'll wait for a reply before proceeding. Thanks !

Sorry Dan about the confusion. I shut off all functions of Norton Internet Security and was able to save the uninstall list finally. Otherwise, the program was simply closing each time I tried to save list.

I'm trying my best to follow your directions exactly but I think I am missing some part of the process...anyway, here we go:
1) The uninstall list
2) OTMoveIt2 Log (i just copied what I think I told it to "move" into notepad before exiting)
3) My most recent HiJackThis log

*** Not sure where I was supposed to copy the "installed programs" list from so please let me know if that needs to be
done still. Looking at the new log I still see problems but looks better than the first one.

Thanks again for your help so far and I'll be waiting for more direction. JC

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Ok Dan, everything went as planned but I'm not sure if it's totally clean yet. Please let me know if you see anything that needs more work or have any suggestions on additional files to delete.

Unread postby dan12 » May 21st, 2008, 4:15 am

I believe we have some files hiding from us, we need to flush them out.

Please go to the C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe. Right click on the HijackThis.exe file and select "Rename". Rename it Catbarber.exe,

Then run HijackThis again and post a new log please.

Thanks dan

Yes you are right about something being wrong still. Something keeps setting my IE Privacy options to the lowest setting "allow all cookies" etc. Also, I am beginning to get some redirect pop up windows advertising Anti-Spyware programs.

Here's the Catbarber.exe log :

Re: Task Manager has been disabled--Can't access internet

Unread postby dan12 » May 22nd, 2008, 2:58 am

We will begin with ComboFix.exe. Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

  2. Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log.
