Winfixer popups even though no installation

Unread postby swimmercowgirl » October 10th, 2005, 9:11 pm

I have this nefarious winfixer problem. The program never installed (as it was blocked), but I cannot get rid of the pop-ups to install. I installed new anti-virus software, which detected and deleted a trojan. I ran adaware, the new microsoft antispyware beta, and whatever spyware protection/detection McAfee has. Someone also suggested I try Microsoft's Malicious pgm removal, which detected nothing wrong with my system. However, like I mentioned the popups won't stop and I can't login to certain sites, so I think something is going on...

Here is my HJT log:

Hi swimmercowgirl,
Welcome to the forum.
I will be helping to advise you about your malware issues.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Update HijackThis. The version of HijackThis you are running is out of date. In order to see everything we may need, the latest version is required.
Download the HijackThis self extracting file to your HJT folder.
Double click HijackThis_sfx.exe, and select Unzip. When done click OK.
Close the WinZip self Extractor window.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Post a New HJT Log
Reboot your computer. Start HijackThis. Click Do System Scan and Save a Log File.
When the Scan is complete, select the whole log (Ctrl-A), copy and paste the log contents in a reply. Please do not use NotePad's Word Wrap when you paste in the reply.
Thanks

Hi,
Okay, I updated HJT and re-ran the scan. Here is the log file, but I am not sure about the wordwrap...It does not wrap in the notepad file (I had never selected it), but when I paste the contents here the wordwrap kicks in. Sorry, let me know if there is a way to fix this and I can re-post the log file. (I also tried manually to fix this in this reply, but it doesn't work. I don't know BBCode only some HTML).

swimmercowgirl,
-----------------------------------------------------------
Please print these instructions out for use in Safe Mode.

Download and install CCleaner from here.
Don't run CCleaner yet.

Please download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
You will first be presented with a warning.
It should look like this
VundoFix V2.13 by Atri
By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk
Press enter to continue....

At this point press enter one time.
Next you will see:
Type in the filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkklk.dll
Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.
Next you will see:
Please type in the second filepath as instructed by the forum staff
Then Press Enter, Then F6, Then Enter Again to continue with the fix.

At this point please type the following file path (make sure to enter it exactly as below!):
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\klkkj.*
This will be the vundo filename spelled backwards; for example if the vundo file was was vundo.dll you would enter odnuv.*

Press Enter, then press the F6 key, then press Enter one more time to continue with the fix.

The fix will run, then HijackThis will open.
In HiJackThis, please place a check next to the following items and click FIX CHECKED:
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {6DD0BC06-4719-4BA3-BEBC-FBAE6A448152} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkklk.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: jkklk - C:\WINDOWS\system32\jkklk.dll

After you have fixed these items, close Hijackthis and Press any key to Force a reboot of your computer.
Pressing any key will cause a "Blue Screen of Death". This is normal, do not worry!
Once your machine reboots please continue with the instructions below.

Run CCleaner.
Click on Options, Select Advanced. Now UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
Make sure the Cleaner block on the left is selected. Choose the Windows tab. (Note: Do not use the "Issues" section)
Check everything EXCEPT cookies, the Autocomplete Form History and the Advanced part of the Menu.
Choose Run Cleaner. This process could take a while.
When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished. Click Exit.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan
Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder.

swimmercowgirl,
Good work. Log Looks good.
If I have your OK, let's clean up and also provide some extra protection.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Remove log items with HighjackThis. Start HijackThis. If the opening screen shows, choose None of the above, just start the program.
Click Scan. When the Scan is complete, Check the following entries:
(Some of these lines may be missing)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {549B5CA7-4A86-11D7-A4DF-000874180BB3} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {FDD3B846-8D59-4ffb-8758-209B6AD74ACC} - (no file)

Make sure all other windows except HJT are closed, and Click Fix Checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Set Your Computer to Show All Files
Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. In addition, if you have Windows XP, go to Start, Search. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Using Windows Explorer (My Computer), go to the folder C:\windows\Prefetch\ and delete all the files in it. Do Not delete the folder, just all the files.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Disable WinXP System Restore
Disable your System Restore to remove malware files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files. You will also lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected.
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, put a Check mark in the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
If you are not prompted to reboot, do it on your own.
-----------------------------------------------------------
After the Reboot,
Enable WinXP System Restore
- Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
- On the System Restore tab, Clear the Check mark beside the Turn Off System Restore check box.
- Click OK twice, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart the computer.
The disable/re-enable System Restore sequence is not to be done regularly, but only once after the removal of malware.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites to your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from accidentally running or downloading known malicious programs. Available from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
After the installation, click Download Latest Protection Updates. When it finishes, clickEnable All Protection.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Download and Install a HOSTS File
A Hosts file is a plain text file which prevents your computer from connecting to malware and spyware sites by redirecting the connection request to 127.0.0.1, which is your local address. If you use a proxy server, or if you are on AOL, be sure to read the special instructions.
You can download the MVPS Hosts File and see a HOSTS file tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
This website also contains useful tips, and links to other resources and utilities.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Run CCleaner.
( Do not use the "Issues" block )
Click on Options, Select Advanced. Now UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folders older than 48 hours"
Make sure the Cleaner block on the left is selected. Choose the Windows tab.
Check everything EXCEPT cookies, the Autocomplete Form History and the Advanced part of the Menu.
Choose Run Cleaner. This process could take a while.
When CCleaner shows how much has been removed, cleaning is finished. Click Exit.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Secure your Internet Explorer
- From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
- Click once on the Security tab
- Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
- Click once on the Custom Level button.
- Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
- Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
- Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
- Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
- Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to - Prompt
- Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to - Prompt
- When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
- If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
- Press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page

Good Luck
