Re: HIJACKTHIS Log / Malware? / Pop-up ads / Performance down

Unread postby peku006 » May 17th, 2008, 3:45 am

Welcome to the MWR forums. My name is peku006. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research. Please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic. Please stay at one forum for help.
3. Please continue reading posts until I give the All Clear. It is important to note this, as a clean looking HijackThis is not always a sign your system is clean.

Note: I am still in training here at Malware Removal, however I will be working under the direct supervision of one of our Malware Experts. Any recommendations will first be approved before being given to you. Because of this, there may be a short delay in getting our responses to you, however be assured that we will be working diligently on your problem.

Hi HeffeWeizen

Looking over your log, it seems you don't have any evidence of an anti-virus software.

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network. Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download ONE of these free (for personal use) anti-virus programs NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEdition Classic
2) avast! 4 Home Edition
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time.

Before we start fixing anything you should print out these instructions or copy them to a NotePad file so they will be accessible.
Some steps will require you to disconnect from the Internet or use Safe Mode and you will not have access to this page.

1 - MOVE HJT FROM DESKTOP
Currently, you have HijackThis located directly on your desktop. In order to keep it together with the backups it makes, please do the following:
  • Right click on the desktop and select > New > Folder
  • Name the new folder HijackThis
  • Now, drag and drop HiJackThis.exe into that new folder

2 - Disable Windows Defender

Please disable Windows Defender Real Time Protection as it may interfere with the fix.
    To disable Windows Defender:
    • Open Windows Defender
    • Click Tools
    • Click General Settings
    • Scroll down to Real Time Protection Options
    • Uncheck Turn on Real Time Protection (recommended)
    • Close Windows Defender
Don't forget to re-enable it, when your computer is clean..

3 - Download and Install SDFix
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

4 - Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

5 - Run SDFix
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

6 - Scan With ComboFix

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix -

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says -

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows -

  • Close/Disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

7- uninstall list

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

8 - Status Check
Please reply with

1. the SDFix Report.txt
2. the ComboFix log
3. the Uninstall list
4. a fresh HijackThis log

Thanks peku006

Re: HIJACKTHIS Log / Malware? / Pop-up ads / Performance down

Unread postby peku006 » May 18th, 2008, 5:56 pm

Hi HeffeWeizen

I hate to give you bad news but one or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

Backdoor Trojans are the most dangerous and most widespread type of Trojan. Backdoor Trojans provide the author or "master" of the Trojan with remote "administration" of victim machines. Unlike legitimate remote administration utilities, they install, launch and run invisibly, without the consent or knowledge of the user. Once installed, backdoor Trojans can be instructed to send, receive, execute and delete files, harvest confidential data from the computer, log activity on the computer and more.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.
In addition to the backdoor Trojan that has been identified, your computer is afflicted with multiple other infections. Although we can make an attempt to clean this machine, we cannot guarantee that it will be secure afterwards. Your best and safest course of action is a reformat and reinstallation of the Windows operating system.

If you do decide to attempt cleaning rather than a reformat, do understand that although we may be able to remove all known visible malware, we cannot guarantee that unknown and unseen malware will have been removed, nor will your system be restored to its pre-infection state. We cannot remedy unknown changes the malware may likely have made in order to allow itself access, nor can we repair the damages it may possibly have caused to vital system files.

Please note that even if we should be successful in removing these infections from your system, it is quite possible that the changes made to the system by the malware may impact negatively on your computer during the removal process. In short, your system may never regain its former stability or its full functionality without a reformat.

Please read these for more information:

How Do I Handle Possible Identify Theft, Internet Fraud and CC Fraud?

When Should I Format, How Should I Reinstall

Should you have any questions, please feel free to ask.
Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Thanks

Hi HeffeWeizen

"The backdoor itself is already removed. We can likely clean the rest of the infected files off the computer, and if you wish we will attempt to do so, but we cannot be absolutely sure that the infection didn't do something to your system to reduce the system security. Therefore you shold not use the computer for sensetive operations such as bank transactins etc.
If you do any on-line banking, or store any financial information on this system, you should immediately call your financial institution and advise them of the situation so you can secure your accounts. Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions using this computer until you have reformated it as there is a certain risk that the attacker could get the new passwords and transaction information."

Please let us know what you have decided to do in your next post.

Thanks
