Hi,

Not sure why your restore disk is so different from others. Some questions first.

It turns out that although the computer manufacturer repeatedly told me before purchase he supplied a full Microsoft WindowsXP installation disk, in fact when I now come to run this disk it is some kind of a restore disk.

You said it's provided by the computer manufacturer.

Did you buy your computer from them?

Is there a sticker on your computer?

Here's how the stickers look like, depending on license - http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howt ... laylang=en

Also, is this computer newly bought or did you buy it from some other people?

Hello,

Thank you for your post, and your continuing interest.

However, I think I have just started to get somewhere, in the last few hours.

I have disconnected the second HDD, and am concentrating on just the first HDD at the moment. Following some advice I received, I booted with a Win98 boot floppy, and used fdisk and delpart.exe to delete all partitions. I created one new (unformatted) partition with fdisk, and ran this Windows disk I have to see if it would format in NTFS perhaps and maybe install something useful.

I had the biggest surprise I have had for a long time. I booted from the Windows disk, and it started behaving like a normal Windows installation disk, something it had not done previously, as I have reported. I now got that Windows installation screen that offers you three options; to set up Windows, to create a partition, or to delete a selected partition. Going on from this I have subsequently reinstalled WindowsXP, and so far there is no ms.exe in the registry.

Could it be that some malware was influencing the way my Windows disk was running? It is running differently after the partitions on the HDD were deleted. I apologise for any inferences I may have made suggesting the supplier may have misrepresented the nature of this disk.

I have only just got to this stage; am doing some updating at the moment. When I think I have got somewhere worthwhile I shall be in touch with you again.

Regards,

May I ask something:

Following some advice I received, I booted with a Win98 boot floppy, and used fdisk and delpart.exe to delete all partitions.

Did you backup before doing the above?

Hello,

I hope the following information is what you want.

Did I backup before deleting the partitions? Partially. I have burned onto disks, copies of data (mainly Word documents) that I should be quite pleased to have survive this episode. And I burned onto disks my exported Favorites, email messages and copies of some drivers. I also have some Word documents that were on on a memory stick anyway, as well as having another copy of them on the computer HDD.

Hello,

I have disconnected the second HDD. On the first HDD I believe I have deleted everything, reformatted, and reinstalled Windows XP on a newly created partiton, as you advised.

May I now send you another Hijack log (taken from the first HDD) for your inspection?

Hello.

I was pleased to have your good news about things being clean so far.

No big issues. Because you have not warned against it, can I take it that you think the data files I backed-up onto disks, together with the exported Favorites and email messages, can now be safely restored? If so, I shall then have a working computer on the first HDD.

Then I shall go on to attempt to delete and format everything on the second HDD, if that sounds all right to you.

Thank you for your continuing help,

Anode.

Yup, that is all right. :)

Favourites and emails can be safely restored. So are the documents. Just remember to scan them with your antivirus before opening in case any one of them are infected.

Hello,

Thank you for the information.

I have now deleted and reformatted the first HDD, and deleted and reformatted the second HDD.

Both HDDs have been reconnected to the computer, and both show up as expected in My Computer.

Below is a log of this configuration, for your inspection if you would be so kind.

One of the items I backed-up to a CD was a file created by an application called Driver Genius. This purports to find drivers on a system and store them in a self-restoring file. One click and most of the drivers you were using are restored. If you were restoring my system, would you think it safe (from a virus standpoint) to use this?

Best wishes,

Anode.

I would not use it to restore drivers.

1. It's not uncommon for malware to use drivers to start themselves up. These drivers are then used to protect themselves and other files which they dropped on your system.

2. It's also not uncommon for drivers to go out-of-date. To prevent that, get the latest from either Microsoft through Windows Updates, or your manufacturer website.

Your log is still looking good. :)

Thank you for your continuing help. I shall do as you say about the drivers.

Do you think it would be appropriate for me to send you further logs? If so, at what stage(s) in the restoration of my computer?
