Malware?

Unread postby Ramage » May 7th, 2008, 12:35 am

Hey,

Thanks a lot for reading this, here's an overview of my problem:
My computer always seems to be crashing after starting up Windows (and sometimes just randomly). I've done a bootscan with Avast which told me I had a couple malware in the System Volume Information. I have also reformatted my computer many times. Last night Comodo Firewall also blocked 1 suspicious attempt as well as a couple intrusions. All my files non-system files in C drive (eg. My Documents) also seem to be wiped each time it crashes.

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Unless informed of in advance, failure to post replies within 5 days will result in this thread being closed.

Hello and welcome to the forums

My name is Katana and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.

Please observe these rules while we work:
1. If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
2. Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
3. Please continue to respond until I give you the "All Clear"
(Just because you can't see a problem doesn't mean it isn't there)

If you can do those three things, everything should go smoothly :D

I apologize for the delay in responding, but as you can probably see the forums are quite busy.
Unfortunately there are far more people needing help than there are helpers.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There is nothing dramatic showing in your HJT log, have there been any other symptoms ?

Yeah the HJT logs seem normal, but Comodo Firewall always seems to be blocking intrusions - many times a day in fact.

Thanks again!

That could be perfectly normal, have you ever had any P2P software installed ?
Even without P2P, you can get attempts by "Bots" to connect to your machine.

You need to turn off Windows firewall if you have Comodo installed, they could conflict.

How old is the machine ?
it may be that the Hard drive is corrupted have you done a scandisc ?

No P2P installed and Windows Firewall is off. I had to reformat several times since Windows will sometimes fail to startup (with a BSOD too). The people who I bought the PC from have also run virus scans and found lots of malware. The machine is around 5 months old and what's scandisc?

From the DSS log
-- Security Center -------------------------------------------------------------

AUOptions is disabled.
Windows Internal Firewall is enabled.

Please can you check the windows firewall setting

Right, let's rule out malware before we look for hardware/software problems

Active Scan
Your Antivirus and/or Antispyware may give a warning during the scan. This is perfectly normal
Please go to this site Link >> ActiveScan << LINK
  • Click the Scan Now button
  • Follow the prompts to install the Active X if necessary
  • Go and make a cup of tea/coffee/beverage of your choice and watch some TV :)
  • When the scan is finished, a report will be generated
  • Next to Scan Details click the small Save button and save the report to your desktop.
  • Please post the report in your reply.

GetSystemInfo

Please download GetSystemInfo from HERE
Double click GetSysteminfo.exe
It will ask you where to save the report, please save it to your desktop or somewhere that you can find it easily.
It will display it's progress on your screen, when the box disappears it has finished.

The GetSystemInfo log will probably be quite long, so it may be best if you attach that log to your post
(look for Upload attachment when you post your reply )

Argh I think I did something wrong... Since you asked me if I had done a Scandisc, I went and did it (A local drive --> Properties --> Tools --> Error Checking). It froze on Phase 2. I restarted and it started doing a CHKDSK on Local Drive E and froze on 2/3. I restarted again and now nothing is showing up...
I guess I screwed up? I'll reformat again tomorrow... I'm terribly sorry for wasting your time...

I'm guessing I can't be helped anymore...

Sorry for wasting your time

PS: Im writing this on another PC

I suspect that you may have a corrupt Hard Drive.

I was worried about that happening if we did scan disc.

Let me know how you get on.

Don't worry, you are not wasting my time :)

Due to lack of response, this topic is now closed.

If you still require help, please open a new thread in the Infected? Virus, malware, adware, ransomware, oh my! forum, include a fresh FRST log, and wait for a new helper.
