As far as I know, System Restore will not replace a missing Uninstall file.

Best option is to re-install Norton and then uninstall it, or try again to see if you can load the Norton Removal Tool onto the computer.

If we absolutely have to I'm prepared to attempt a manual hack, but I have to say it is a risky proposition and I can give no assurance that we won't do any damage removing it.

There is of course always the option of re-formatting and re-installing Windows.

I'll ask around and see if anyone else has an option I've overlooked.

Can you send me an Uninstall list please.

Creating an Uninstall List
  • Open HJT, and click on Config, followed by Misc Tools.
  • Click on Open Uninstall Manager, and then click on Save List.
  • This will create a file uninstall_list.txt and prompt you to save it to your HJT folder.
  • Save it please.

Now post it back here.

Gary,
My husband and I were talking and I don't think we removed Norton off this computer. It was already messed up when we got it.
I don't see any Norton or Symantec here.. there are a bunch of files and folders in Explorer.

I found the Symantec manual uninstall page. Is this an option? I've tried to put the link in a bbcode. What am I doing wrong?

click here there isn't a .com with it. If you copy paste the link, it will work... Sometimes I think there isn't much hope for me...but I refuse to give up... :!:

OK, glad to see you got Norton's Removal Tool to run.

Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the following (if still present).

LiveUpdate Notice (Symantec Corporation)

There's a few things need removing with HJT.

Run a scan with HJT and when finished check the following items (if found).

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: PeoplePal Toolbar - {A8FB8EB3-183B-4598-924D-86F0E5E37085} - (no file)

O3 - Toolbar: PeoplePal Toolbar - {A8FB8EB3-183B-4598-924D-86F0E5E37085} - (no file)

O4 - HKCU\..\RunOnce: [] C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/servle ... f.00000148

Now close all open windows and click Fix Checked to remove them.

  • Click Start > Run and type cleanmgr then click OK.
  • This will bring up the Disk Cleanup window.
  • Check the following entries.
    • Temporary Internet Files.
    • Recycle Bin.
    • Temporary Files.
  • Click OK.
  • When a prompt pops up click Yes.

You have no Firewall on the computer now, you need to install one ASAP.

How's the computer running now?

We are good here. The computer is a little slow starting up, but I think that's normal for win xp.
I'm taking this computer home. Thanks so much... Back to searching for answers to question 7 my regular studies. Thanks so much for all your help fixing these computers. {{{{{{{{{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}}}}}]
